    Notes: Poly-ether-aroyl-oxadiazoles (PEODZ) of general formula: are reported.Thermal cyclization of the starting polyhydrazides, infrared, thermal, and structural characterization are discussed as function of the number of methylene spacers in the range 2-12.It is found that the position of melting is strongly dependent upon the number of—CH2—, and that moldable polyoxadiazoles are obtained at × values 〉 7. The spherulitic nature of PEODZ is clearly revealed by thermal-optical microscopy which, together with isothermal crystallizations at the differential scanning calorimeter, gives a close insight into the crystalline organization of such polymers. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A new series of poly(ether-alkyl)oxadiazoles of general formula: with m = 3, 4, and 5 has been obtained from the corresponding polyhydrazides through thermal cyclization reaction. The polymers were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle x-ray analysis, and optical microscopy. The polymers were crystalline, with a crystalline texture and structural parameters strongly dependent on the value of m. The Tm's and Tg's value decreased with increasing number of CH2. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Description: The giant megathrust occurred on 26th December 2004 off the west coast of northern Sumatra perturbated the stress field configuration over a wide area surrounding the event source. By means of a viscoelastic spherical model of global postseismic deformation and a new computational finite elements package (FEMSA) we perform an analysis of the stress diffusion following the earthquake near and far from the Sunda trench. We evaluated the stress changes due to the Sumatra earthquake by projecting the Coulomb stress over the sequence of aftershocks taken from various catalogues in a time window spanning about two years and then we considered the possibility that the Sumatra event could have affected subsequent events very far from the source.

    Description: Finite Element methods (FEMs) are a powerful numerical simulation tool for modeling seismic events as they allow to solve three-dimensional complex models. We used a 3D Finite Element approach to evaluate the co-seismic displacement eld produced by the devastating 2004 Sumatra Andaman earthquake, which caused permanent deformations recorded by continuously operating GPS networks in a region of unprecedented extent. Previous analysis of the static displacement fi eld focused on the heterogeneous distribution of moment release on the fault plane; our intention here is to investigate how much the presence of crustal heterogeneities trades off seismic source details. To this aim, we adopted a quite simple source model in modeling the event. The key feature of our analysis is the generation of a complex three dimensional spherical domain. More-over, we also made an accurate analysis concerning boundary conditions, which are crucial for FE simulations.
