Notes: The broad molecular weight distribution (MWD) curves obtained by gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) of polyethylenes prepared in the presence of MgCl2 supported monometallic (Ti or Hf) and bimetallic (Ti/Hf) catalysts were analyzed by deconvolution into component curves. The MWD curves of the monometallic catalysts can be accounted for with only three component curves associated with three distinct families of active sites. The term family is used to indicate a group of relatively similar active sites producing a polymer with Mw/Mn 〈 3. This approach seems valid for both Ti and Hf catalysts in spite of the different characteristic values; indeed we have for the former system 1 〈 Mw/105 〈 2,5 with 6 〈 Mw/Mn 〈 10, whereas for the latter Mw ≈ 7 × 105 and Mw/Mn ≈ 18. In the case of the bimetallic Ti/Hf system with 1,9 〈 Mw/105 〈 2,6 and Mw/Mn ≈ 17, the MWD distribution can be better accounted for on the basis of 6 families of active sites, corresponding to the linear combination of the balanced contributions from both Ti and Hf sites.

Notes: Common variable immunodeficiency is a primary immunodeficiency characterized by a failure of antibody synthesis, whose fundamental immunologic abnormality is still unknown. In our study, we evaluated some immune functions using chemiluminescence in a 32-year-old woman affected by common variable immunodeficiency. In particular, we showed an impairment of her lymphomonocyte proliferative response which was evaluated using a method based on the bioluminescent measurement of ATP. Besides, we found a reducton of her lymphomonocyte IL2 and IL4 production: the IL4 production was evaluated through an ELISA method, whereas the IL2 activity was determined by its ability to support the IL2-dependent murine T-cell line (CTLL) proliferation which was established through a method based on the bioluminescent measurement of ATP. Finally, we evaluated both yeast-induced and fMLP-induced polymorphonuclear and monocyte oxidative metabolism through a luminol-amplified chemiluminescence; these functions were within normal values. Therefore, in our patient affected by common variable immunodeficiency, we demonstrated an impairment of cellular immunity, which might contribute to the pathogenesis of the disease. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: Metabolites of the antitumor agent, ellipticine (NSC 71795), are mainly secreted in rat bile as two conjugates of hydroxylated ellipticine. The possible involvement of an arene oxide intermediate prior to hydroxylation and conjugation has been studied using 7,9-dideutero-ellipticine and by determining the conservation of deuterium in the phenolic products. The deuterated drug was synthesized by acid catalyzed exchange and was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance and high and low resolution mass spectrometry. Mass spectra of two conjugated metabolites from rat bile showed a mass ion at m/e 263 (singly deuterated hydroxylated ellipticine). There was no evidence for conservation of deuterium at the position of hydroxylation (m/e 264). These results indicate that the major pathway of metabolism for this cancer chemotherapeutic drug, prior to conjugation and excretion in rat bile, proceeds by aromatic hydroxylation apparently without involving an arene oxide/NIH shift mechanism.

Notes: The crystallization and melting behaviour of two sets of ethylene/1-butene copolymers have been analysed by DSC. The samples, with comonomer content in the range from 0 to 21.5 mol%, were obtained by industrial processes using both Mg/Ti-based catalyst systems. The composition dependences of melting and crystallization temperatures were found to be strictly affected by the catalyst type. Moreover, logarithmic plots of the melting and crystallization enthalpy as a function of the ethylene content (mol%) in the copolymers fitted linear relationships whose slopes have been related to the critical sequence length of crystallizable ethylene units, depending on the catalytic system. These results are compared with those reported in the literature for ethylene/1-butene copolymers synthesized by other catalysts and are accounted for by a different distribution of the comonomer units in the macromolecules of the two sets of samples.
