    Description: One hundred years ago (December 1908) a devastating tsunami associated with an earthquake struck the Straits of Messina area, causing many casualties. On the basis of seismic data and observed runups and arrival times, we suggest that the tsunami was likely generated by coseismic seafloor displacement coupled with a small submarine landslide triggered by the earthquake. Backwards ray-tracing using a depth-dependent velocity field, submarine slope analysis and inferences form the main drainage network allowed us to identify possible locations for the source of the submarine landslide. We then performed direct simulations of tsunamis generated by the earthquake and landslides and identified the tsunami source (earthquake plus landslide) that best fits observational data in a small volume submarine landslide (1–5 km3) located offshore Nizza, Sicily.

    Description: On 29 June 1170 a large earthquake hit a vast area in the Near Eastern Mediterranean, comprising the present-day territories of western Syria, central southern Turkey, and Lebanon. Although this was one of the strongest seismic events ever to hit Syria, so far no in-depth or specific studies have been available. Furthermore, the seismological literature (from 1979 until 2000) only elaborated a partial summary of it, mainly based solely on Arabic sources. The major effects area was very partial, making the derived seismic parameters unreliable. This earthquake is in actual fact one of the most highly documented events of the medieval Mediterranean. This is due to both the particular historical period in which it had occurred (between the second and the third Crusades) and the presence of the Latin states in the territory of Syria. Some 50 historical sources, written in eight different languages, have been analyzed: Latin (major contributions), Arabic, Syriac, Armenian, Greek, Hebrew, Vulgar French, and Italian. A critical analysis of this extraordinary body of historical information has allowed us to obtain data on the effects of the earthquake at 29 locations, 16 of which were unknown in the previous scientific literature. As regards the seismic dynamics, this study has set itself the question of whether there was just one or more than one strong earthquake. In the former case, the parameters (Me 7.7 ± 0.22, epicenter, and fault length 126.2 km) were calculated. Some hypotheses are outlined concerning the seismogenic zones involved.

    Description: Earthquake occurrence stems from a complex interaction of processes that are still partially unknown. This lack of knowledge is revealed by the different statistical distributions that have been so far proposed and by the different beliefs about the role of some key components as the tectonic setting, fault recurrence, seismic clusters, and fault interaction. Here, we explore these issues through a numerical model based on a realistic interacting fault system. We use an active fault system in central Italy responsible for moderate to large earthquakes, where geometric and kinematic parameters of each structure can be confidently assessed. Then, we generate synthetic catalogs by modeling different seismogenic processes and allowing coseismic and postseismic fault interaction. The comparison of synthetic and real seismic catalogs highlights many interesting features: (1) synthetic seismic catalogs reproduce the short-term clustering and the long-term modulation observed in the historical catalog of the last centuries; (2) a recurrent model of earthquake occurrence on faults is more effective than a Poisson model to explain such short-term and long-term time features; (3) a realistic fault pattern is a key component to generate stochasticity in the seismic catalog, preventing a systematic time ‘‘synchronization’’ of strongly coupled faults; (4) such a stochasticity may put strong limits to the forecasting capability of models based on fault interaction, even though the latter is a key component of the process. Finally, the model allows explicit predictions on future paleoseismological observations to be made.
