    Description: Geoscience knowledge has a strong impact in modern society as it relates to natural hazards, sustainability and environmental issues. The general public has a demanding attitude towards the understanding of crucial geo-scientific topics that is only partly satisfied by science communication strategies and/or by outreach or school programs. A proper knowledge of the phenomena might help trigger crucial inquiries when approaching mitigation of geohazards and geo-resources, while providing the right tool for the understanding of news and ideas floating from the web or other media, and, in other words, help communication to be more efficient. Nonetheless available educational resources seem to be inadequate in meeting the goal, while research institutions are facing the challenge to experience new communication strategies and non-conventional way of learning capable to allow the understanding of crucial scientific contents. We suggest the use of multi-sensory approach as a successful non-conventional way of learning for children and as a different perspective of learning for older students and adults. Sense organs stimulation are perceived and processed to build the knowledge of the surrounding, including all sorts of hazards. Powerfully relying in the sense of sight, Humans have somehow lost most of their ability for a deep perception of the environment enriched by all the other senses. Since hazards involve emotions we argue that new ways to approach the learning might go exactly through emotions that one might stress with a tactile experience, a hearing or smell stimulation. To test and support our idea we are building a package of learning activities and exhibits based on a multi-sensory experience where the sight is not allowed.

    Description: Risk misperception often ineffectively drives us to choose recovery over prevention; the latter being usually conceived with actions aimed at mitigation of infrastructure vulnerability. Although it is fundamental to implant the culture of prevention and therefore have an impact on risk mitigation and community disaster resilience, long-term programmes encompassing knowledge, innovation and education are often underestimated. If education involves children, we more efficiently spread the culture of risk reduction through a chain reaction dissemination mechanism and prompt behaviours that are better imprinted on the mind, reinforce awareness of hazard response, and foster citizens who tomorrow might be part of the process of making crucial decisions on prevention strategies. For the past 10 years, our learn-by-playing, hands-on, emotionaldriven, curiosity-driven approach activities have involved more than 20 000 students and teachers living in areas prone to natural hazards. In addition to requests and appreciation from the public, questionnaires handed out to teachers and students have proved that our approach to prevention best practice is successful. Questionnaires filled in by children and their families encouraged us to promote the strong potential for dissemination in the local environment. We are engaged in on-going research on risk reduction oriented science outreach activities to implement models focused on geoscience education and to give citizens tools to affect the process of risk reduction decision-making.

    Description: Deliverables D8.3 derives from the research activity conducted in the S2-2012 project. This deliverable contributes to the Task 8 – Risk perception and communication. In the 2014-2015 we had the primary task to realise a survey, with statistical significance, on the perception of seismic risk of the Italian citizens. The task is not limited to the collection of data from the survey, but rather concerns the interpretation of the data collected, and the comparison between the data of perception and the real data that determine seismic risk. Today risk perception is considered being fundamental for the behaviour towards risks and for the decision to take preventive measures. In order to develop effective information and risk communication strategies, the perception of risks and the influencing factors should be known. This report presents preliminary elaborations of the survey on seismic risk perception conducted in Italy in the first months of 2015 (January-March).

    Description: The communication of natural hazards and their consequences is one of the more relevant ethical issues faced by scientists. In the last years, social studies have provided evidence that risk communication is strongly influenced by the risk perception of people. In order to develop effective information and risk communication strategies, the perception of risks and the influencing factors should be known. A theory that offers an integrative approach to understanding and explaining risk perception is still missing. To explain risk perception, it is necessary to consider several perspectives: social, psychological and cultural perspectives and their interactions. This paper presents the results of the CATI survey on seismic risk perception in Italy, conducted by INGV researchers on funding by the DPC. We built a questionnaire to assess seismic risk perception, with a particular attention to compare hazard, vulnerability and exposure perception with the real data of the same factors. The Seismic Risk Perception Questionnaire (SRP-Q) is designed by semantic differential method, using opposite terms on a Likert scale to seven points. The questionnaire allows to obtain the scores of five risk indicators: Hazard, Exposure, Vulnerability, People and Community, Earthquake Phenomenon. The questionnaire was administered by telephone interview (C.A.T.I.) on a statistical sample at national level of over 4,000 people, in the period January –February 2015. Results show that risk perception seems be underestimated for all indicators considered. In particular scores of seismic Vulnerability factor are extremely low compared with house information data of the respondents. Other data collected by the questionnaire regard Earthquake information level, Sources of information, Earthquake occurrence with respect to other natural hazards, participation at risk reduction activities and level of involvement. Research on risk perception aims to aid risk analysis and policy-making by providing a basis for understanding and anticipating public responses to hazards and improving the communication of risk information among people, technical experts, and decision-makers. Those dealing with seismic risk need to understand what people think about and how they respond to this risk. Without such understanding, well-intended policies may be ineffective. (Slovic, 1987). For these reasons we believe that comparing the perception factors with the "real factors" of seismic risk, is a crucial point to understand the relationship between scientific knowledge and public understanding. Without a comparison with reality, research on risk perception is just an intellectual exercise.

A theory of risk perception that offers an integrative approach to understanding and explaining risk perception is still missing. To explain risk perception is necessary to consider several perspectives: social, psychological, cultural, and their interactions. In our opinion the method of semantic differential is one of the most suitable to understand all its aspects. The questionnaire on seismic risk perception has been constructed by this method. The questionnaire consists of an informative part and seven sections respectively dedicated to: hazard; vulnerability (home and workplace); exposure; institutions and community; earthquake phenomenon; risk information and their sources; comparison between seismic risk and other natural hazards. The questionnaire allows to obtain the perception score for each factor: Hazard, Exposure, Vulnerability, Institutions and Community, Earthquake phenomenon. On January 2013 started the first survey in Italy, preliminary data are discussed. By improving our knowledge about the seismic risk perception would allow us to plan in advance activities for seismic risk mitigation and more effectively strategies for risk communication
