    Description: The objective of this work is to perform a purely empirical assessment of the actual capabilities of the horizontal-to-vertical (H/V) spectral ratio technique to provide reliable and relevant information concerning site conditions and/or site amplification. This objective has been tackled through the homogeneous (re)processing of a large volume of earthquakes and ambient noise data recorded by different research teams in more than 200 sites located mainly in Europe, but also in the Caribbean and in Tehran. The original recordings were first gathered in a specific database with information on both the sites and recorded events. Then, for all sites close to an instrumented reference, average site-to-reference spectral ratios (“spectral ratio method” (SSR)) were derived in a homogeneous way (window selection, smoothing, signal-to-noise ratio threshold, averaging), as well as H/V ratios (“HVSRE–RF”) on earthquake recordings. H/V ratios were also obtained from noise recordings at each site (either specific measurements, or extracted from pre- or post-event noise windows). The spectral curves resulting from these three techniques were estimated reliable for a subset of 104 sites, and were thus compared in terms of fundamental frequency, amplitude and amplification bandwidth, exhibiting agreements and disagreements, for which interpretations are looked for in relation with characteristics of site conditions. The first important result consists in the very good agreement between fundamental frequencies obtained with either technique, observed for 81% of the analyzed sites. A significant part of the disagreements correspond to thick, low frequency, continental sites where natural noise level is often very low and H/V noise ratios do not exhibit any clear peak. The second important result is the absence of correlation between H/V peak amplitude and the actual site amplification measured on site-to-reference spectral ratios. There are, however, two statistically significant results about the amplitude of the H/V curve: the peak amplitude may be considered as a lower bound estimate of the actual amplification indicated by SSR (it is smaller for 79% of the 104 investigated sites), and, from another point of view, the difference in amplitude exhibits a questioning correlation with the geometrical characteristics of the sediment/basement interface: large SSR/HV differences might thus help to detect the existence of significant 2D or 3D effects.

    Description: This study presents the results of 90 seismic ambient noise measurements in Palermo, the main city of Sicily (Italy). The dataset has been processed using the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVNSR) technique and interpreted in terms of local geology, which is characterized by the presence of alluvial sediments of two river-beds masked by urbanization since the 17th century. HVNSRs show significant variations in the study area: when the transition stiff-to-soft is crossed, a typical spectral peak appears in the HVNSRs, mostly in the frequency band 1 to 2 Hz, and exceeding a factor of 3 in amplitude. Using available information on sub-surface geological structure we compute theoretical 1- and 2-D transfer functions. The resonance frequencies of soft soils obtained by HVNSR are well reproduced by the fundamental frequencies from numerical modeling. The distribution of frequency peaks of HVNSR and their amplitudes are also compared with the local damage caused by historical earthquakes. Previous studies demonstrated that damage variations in Palermo were controlled more by near-surface geology than building vulnerability. A uniform vulnerability is an ideal condition to test statistical methods and their capability in seeking correlation between HVNSR and potential damage due to local geological conditions. We apply two well-established multivariate statistical methodologies (factor analysis and canonical correlation) to the HVNSR dataset and macroseismic data (damage grades of the European Macroseismic Scale). Through these analyses we quantify the significance of the correlation between the HVNSR peak in the low-medium frequency range (0.5-3 Hz) and the occurrence of the highest damage grades. This approach allows us i) to estimate the threshold value in the resulting linear combination of the HVNSR amplitudes which separates zones of light damage from zones of significant damage, and therefore ii) to improve the spatial definition of potentially high hazard zones through a denser grid of microtremor measurements.

Le esperienze maturate nel corso del progetto hanno condotto alla stesura di linee guida per il calcolo degli scenari di scuotimento al bedrock attraverso approcci deterministici. In questo ambito è stata introdotta una classificazione degli scenari deterministici secondo tre diversi livelli di complessità.

    Description: The Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio from earthquake recordings (HVSR) and from ambient noise recordings (HVN) realistically indicate fundamental frequency but, for the majority of the worldwide examined sites, they do not provide reliable amplification curves as predicted by the earthquake Spectral Ratio to a reference site (SSR). Given the fact that HVSR and especially HVN can be easily obtained, it is challenging to search for a meaningful correlation with SSR amplification functions in the whole frequency band. To this aim we used recordings from 75 sites worldwide and we applied a multivariate statistical approach (the canonical correlation analysis) to investigate and quantify any correlation among spectral ratios and, from a subset of sites in sedimentary basins, with geometrical and geophysical parameters (S-wave velocity and the 2D geometry of the valley). Results show a correlation between SSR and HVN or HVSR that can be statistically quantified, and it is modulated in specific frequency range. Moreover, the larger are the Vs30, the bedrock depth and the valley’s shape ratio, the higher is the low-frequency amplitude in HVSR and HVN, and the lower is the high-frequency value. Despite the limitation of the database, the correlation results can be used to estimate the excepted SSR spectral ratio of specific sites in the investigated areas when only noise measurements are available(see the companion paper De Rubeis et al., 2012).

To this aim we used recordings from 75 sites worldwide and we applied a multivariate statistical approach (canonical correlation analysis) to investigate and quantify any correlation among spectral ratios. The canonical correlation between SSR and HVN is then used to estimate the expected SSR at each site by a weighted average of the SSR values measured at the other sites; the weights are properly set to account more for sites with similar behaviour in terms of the canonical correlation results between HVN and SSR. This procedure, repeated for all sites in turn, constitutes the basis of a cross validation. The comparison between the inferred and the original SSR highlights the improvements of site response estimation with respect to the use of ambient noise techniques. The goodness and limitations of the reconstruction procedure are explained by specific geological settings.

    Description: During the MW 5.7 and 6.0 Umbria–Marche earthquakes of 1997 September 26, the historical centre of Nocera Umbra suffered MCS intensity VII–VIII. The zone is located on the top of a hill, a condition potentially favourable to ground motion amplification. However, also vulnerability is higher on the hill because of the ancient age of buildings. A temporary array of eight seismological stations was installed across the hill to quantify the amplification effect due to topography.Waveforms of 14 aftershocks (2.6〈ML 〈4.1) are selected for the analysis. During each earthquake the largest amplitudes are observed on the hilltop, spectral ratios are computed using rotated horizontal components to search for directional effects. Amplifications are found in two separate frequency bands: one in the range 2–4 Hz, where the increase of amplitude is moderate (never exceeding a factor of 4) and the polarization is transversal to the hill major axis; the second above 10 Hz, where amplifications are larger and reach values as high as 25 Hz. High-frequency polarization varies for different sites and frequencies suggesting that smaller-scale complexities control the high frequency response. Synthetic seismograms of 2-D models confirm the occurrence of amplification, although not all details are fit by numerical simulations and the agreement between observations and models is significant only in terms of the fundamental resonance frequency, around 3 Hz. In the models, amplifications are much smaller than the observed ones. We conclude that topography could have been responsible for a small increase of damage in the hill zone but the most significant role on damage was played by the locally higher vulnerability.
