Notizen: Preferential adsorption of cations occurs in the solvated shell surrounding polyanions, especially polynucleotides and nucleic acids. The solvation parameter Γ is determined from sedimentation coefficients which are considered as pienometric determinations of the specific volume of the sample. By comparing two identical concentrations (0.1M) of monovalent salts, NaCl and CsCl, and using the model of DNA described in the preceding paper, one can relate the ratio SCs/SNa to solvation parameters ΓCs, and ΓNa.On the other hand, Γ can be related to the difference of energy W, between cation and water, to be extracted from the solution and placed in the vicinity of the polyanion. One finds generally a preferential solvation of the polarizable caesium ion by means of London-van der Waals interactions with bases. With reasonable assumptions, an estimate of W can be made, and the predicted value of Γ can be compared to the experimental one. An average of six sites is found around each base in a single-stranded polymer, but-only one in the double-stranded structure. The amount of secondary structure can thus be estimated from the simple measurement of the ratio of two sediment constants.

Beschreibung: On 21 August 1962 an earthquake sequence set off near the city of Benevento, in Italy's southern Apennines. Three earthquakes, the largest having Mw 6.1, struck virtually the same area in less than 40 min (at 18:09, 18:19 and 18:44 UTC, respectively). Several historical earthquakes hit this region, and its seismic hazard is accordingly among the highest countrywide. Although poorly understood in the past, the seismotectonics of this region can be revealed by the 1962 sequence, being the only significant earthquake in the area forwhichmodern seismograms are available. We determine location, magnitude, and nodal planes of the first event (18:09 UTC) of the sequence. The focal mechanismexhibits dominant strike-slip rupture along a north-dipping, E-W striking plane or along a west-dipping, N-S striking plane. Either of these solutions is significantly different fromthe kinematics of the typical large earthquakes occurring along the crest of the Southern Apennines, such as the 23 November 1980 Irpinia earthquake (Mw 6.9), caused by predominant normal faulting along NW-SE-striking planes. The epicentre of the 21 August 1962, 18:09 event is located immediately east of the chain axis, near one of the three north-dipping, E-W striking oblique-slip sources thought to have caused one of the three main events of the December1456 sequence (Io XIMCS), the most destructive events in the southern Apennines known to date. Wemaintain that the 21August 1962, 18:09 earthquake occurred along the E-Wstriking fault systemresponsible for the southernmost event of the 1456 sequence and for two smaller but instrumentally documented events that occurred on 6May 1971 (Mw 5.0) and 27 September 2012(Mw 4.6), further suggesting that normal faulting is not the dominant tectonic style in this portion of the Italian peninsula.

Beschreibung: In this paper, we use regional seismic waveforms recorded by the recently-installed Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) national network and the Mediterranean Very Broadband Seismographic Network (MedNet) stations to develop one-dimensional (1-D) crustal velocity models for the Italian peninsula. About 55,000 P -wave and 35,000 S -wave arrival times from 4,727 events are used to derive average seismic parameters in the crust and uppermost mantle. We define four regions, according to geological constraints and recent travel-time tomography results. Based on the average seismic parameters, we combine broadband seismic waveforms and travel-times of regional phases to model crustal structures for the four regions by applying the genetic algorithm. Our results indicate smooth velocity gradients with depth beneath the Apennines, and a deep Moho beneath the central Alps. Green’s functions from the regionalized 1-D velocity models are used to determine source depths and focal mechanisms for 37 events with magnitude larger than 3.5 by a grid search technique. Our results show that normal and strike-slip faulting source mechanisms dominate the Apenninic belt and most thrust faulting events occur in the Adriatic sea and the outer margin of the northern Apennines.

Beschreibung: We present the surface wave dispersion results of the application of the ambient noise method to broad-band data recorded at 114 stations from the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vul- canologia (INGV) national broad-band network, some stations of the Mediterranean Very Broadband Seismographic Network (MedNet) and of the Austrian Central Institute for Me- teorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG). Vertical-component ambient noise data from 2005 October to 2007 March have been cross-correlated for station-pairs to estimate fundamental mode Rayleigh wave Green’s functions. Cross-correlations are calculated in 1-hr segments, stacked over periods varying between 3 months and 1.5 yr. Rayleigh wave group dispersion curves at periods from 8 to 44 s were determined using the multiple-filter analysis technique. The study region was divided into a 0.2◦ × 0.2◦ grid to invert for group velocity distribu- tions. Checkerboard tests were first carried out, and the lateral resolution was estimated to be about 0.6◦. The resulting group velocity maps from 8 to 36 s show the significant difference of the crustal structure and good correlations with known geological and tectonic features in the study region. The Po Plain and the Southern Alps evidence lower group veloci- ties due to soft alluvial deposits, and thick terrigenous sediments. Our results also clearly showed that the Tyrrhenian Sea is characterized with much higher velocities below 8 km than the Italian peninsula and the Adriatic Sea which indicates a thin oceanic crust beneath the Tyrrhenian Sea.
