Beschreibung: Two major deformation belts occur in the portion of the Adriatic Sea offshore the Gargano Promontory. The NE-SW - trending Tremiti Deformation Belt, located north of the Gargano Promontory, originated during the Plio- Quaternary, while the E-W-trending South Gargano Deformation Belt, located south of the Gargano Promontory, formed in a time span from Eocene to Early Pliocene. These deformation belts may have originated by tectonic inversion of Mesozoic extensional faults. This inversion tectonics, of Tertiary age, can be related to the evolution of the fold-and thrust belts surrounding the Adriatic Sea. The whole of the study area is, at present, seismically active and represents a preferential site of deformation.

Beschreibung: Cruise STR06 on R/V Urania was performed in the framework of the ”INGV - DPC V2 - Monitoring and research activity at Stromboli and Panarea - Unit V2/03”, and resulted as a joint initiative between CNR (IAMC, Napoli and ISMAR, Bologna), INGV (Roma2, Osservatorio Vesuviano, Catania, Gibilmanna-CNT), University of Firenze and DPC, aiming to produce a seismic tomography of the Stromboli volcano, South Eastern Tyrrhenian Sea [Fig.1], and have insights into its 2-D structure and magma chambers. Cruise work plan was designed to extend at sea the existing Seismographic Network, complemented by several mobile stations, and to generate seismic shots by air-gun tuned array. 10 OBS were deployed around Stromboli, along the NE, SE and SW flanks of the volcano, according to (a) morphobathymetric analysis of available and newly produced DTMs, (b) modeling and (c) optimal lineaments with on-land recording stations. Seismic shots along radial and circle lines were obtained by a 4 GI-GUN 105+105 C.I. tuned array, while the absolute shot time was recorded at the resolution of ms. A request for ship time of R/V Uraniawas presented by IAMC, and a period of 7 days, including 2 day of transit was assigned to the project by CNR and scheduled for late November 2006. Cruise STR06 started in Naples 2006-11-27 and ended in Naples 2006-12-06. This paper reports the shipboard activities during the cruise STR06 on R/V Urania and some preliminary results regarding also the onshore activities carried out in order to perform the Stromboli geophysical experiment. A description of the ship, equipment and their usage is given thereinafter, along with details of the general settings, performances and some scientific and technical results.

Beschreibung: From 25 November to 2 December 2006, the first active seismic tomography experiment at Stromboli volcano was carried out with the cooperation of four Italian research institutions. Researchers on board the R/V Urania of the Italian National Council of Research (CNR), which was equipped with a battery of four 210- cubic- inch generated injection air guns (GI guns), fired more than 1500 offshore shots along profiles and rings around the volcano.

Beschreibung: The Messina Strait, that separates peninsular Italy from Sicily, is one of the most seismically active areas of the Mediterranean. The structure and seismotectonic setting of the region are poorly understood, although the area is highly populated and important infrastructures are planned there. New seismic reflection data have identified a number of faults, as well as a crustal scale NE-trending anticline few km north of the strait. These features are interpreted as due to active right-lateral transpression along the north-eastern Sicilian offshore, coexisting with extensional and right-lateral transtensional tectonics in the southern Messina Strait. This complex tectonic network appears to be controlled by independent and overlapping tectonic settings, due to the presence of a diffuse transfer zone between the SE-ward retreating Calabria subduction zone relative to slab advance in the western Sicilian side.

Beschreibung: New high-resolution bathymetric and magnetic data from the western Aeolian sector, southern Tyrrhenian Sea, provide insights into structural and volcanic development of the area, suggesting a strong interaction between volcanism and tectonics. The analysis of these data combined with relocated earthquake distribution, focal plane solutions and strain rate evaluation indicates that the dextral strike-slip Sisifo-Alicudi shear zone is a complex and wide area of active deformation, representing the superficial expression of the deep seated lithospheric tear fault separating the subduction slab below Sicily and Calabria. Most of the observed volcanic features are aligned along a NW–SE trend, such as the Filicudi island-Alicudi North Seamount and Eolo-Enarete alignments, and are dissected by hundred-metre-high scarps along conjugate NNE–SSW trending fault systems. The magnetic field pattern matches the main trends of volcanic features. Spectral analysis and Euler deconvolution of magnetic anomalies show the existence of both deep and shallow sources. High-amplitude, high-frequency anomalies due to shallow sources are dominant close to the volcanic edifices of Alicudi and Filicudi, while the main contribution on the surrounding Eolo, Enarete, Alicudi North and Filicudi North seamounts is given by low-amplitude anomalies and/or deeper magnetic sources. This is probably related to different ages of the volcanic rocks, although hydrothermal processes may have played an important role in blanketing magnetic anomalies, in particular at Enarete and Eolo seamounts. Relative chronology of the eruptive centres and the inferred deformation pattern outline the Quaternary evolution of the western Aeolian Arc: Sisifo, Alicudi North and Filicudi North seamounts might have developed in an early stage, following the Late Pliocene–Early Pleistocene SE-ward migration of arc-related volcanism due to the Ionian subduction hinge retreat; Eolo, Enarete and Filicudi represent later manifestations that led volcanoes to develop duringMid-Late Pleistocene, when the stress regime in the area changed, due to the SSE-ward propagation of the subduction slab tear fault and the consequent reorientation and decrease of trench migration velocity. Finally, volcanic activity occurred in a very short time span at Alicudi, where an almost conical volcanic edifice emerged, suggesting negligible interactions with regional fault systems.
