Notizen: Abstract Helothermine, a recently isolated toxin from the venom of the Mexican beaded lizard Heloderma horridum horridum was tested on K+ currents of newborn rat cerebellar granule cells. In whole-cell voltageclamp experiments, cerebellar granule neurons exhibited at least two different K+ current components: a first transient component which is similar to an I A-type current, is characterized by fast activating and inactivating kinetics and blocked by 4-aminopyridine; a second component which is characterized by noninactivating kinetics, is blocked by tetraetylammonium ions and resembles the classical delayed-rectifier current. When added to the standard external solution at concentrations ranging between 0.1 and 2 μm helothermine reduced the pharmacologically isolated I A-type current component in a voltage- and dose-dependent way, with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 0.52 μm. A comparison between control and nelothermine-modified peak transient currents shows a slowdown of activation and inactivation kinetics. The delayed-rectifier component inhibition was concentration dependent (IC50 = 0.86 μm) but not voltage dependent. No frequency-or use-dependent block was observed on both K+ current types. Perfusing the cells with control solution resulted in quite a complete current recovery. We conclude that helothermine acts with different affinities on two types of K+ current present in central nervous system neurons.

Beschreibung: Coda-Q estimates for the Granada Basin (Southern Spain) are obtained by analyzing earthquakes occurring within or close to the borders of this area. The data set is composed of 54 earthquakes with local magnitudes ranging between 2.2 and 4.0 and with epicentral distances to the nearest station smaller than 10 km. A single-scattering process is assumed. Coda-Q values obtained show a clear dependence on frequency according to the relationship Q = Qof", where n ranges from 0.81 to 0.89. After removing the main site effects and discussing the possible multiple-scattering influence, the lapse-time dependence is interpreted as due to attenuation variations with depth. This result agrees with the variation of coda Q obtained by using different sets of events with increasing hypocentral depth ranges.

Beschreibung: Intrinsic and scattering attenuation parameters, Q~ and Qs, have been measured in three different tectonic areas for local and shallow earthquakes located close to the receiver. The approach developed by Wennerberg (1993), which takes into account the numerical correction of the coda-Q parameter for the multiple scat- tering formulation of Zeng, was used to infer from the estimates of coda Q and direct S-wave Q the intrinsic (Qi) and scattering (Qs) Q values. Results for 1 to 12 Hz range show that Q~ is comparable to Qs for the Etna volcano and for the Campi Flegrei area, while Qi for the tectonically active area of Granada is lower than Qs. Coda Q is close to intrinsic Q, suggesting that, at least in the crust, coda Q is a good estimate of the intrinsic Q. Volcanic areas show a reasonable higher degree of heterogeneity, if compared with the nonvolcanic area of Granada.

Beschreibung: Deception Island - South Shetlands, Antarctica is site of active volcanism. Since 1988 field surveys have been carried out with the aim of seismic monitoring, and in 1994 a seismic array was set up near the site of the Spanish summer base in order to better constrain the source location and spectral properties of the seismic events related to the volcanic activity. The array was maintained during the Antarctic summer of 1995 and the last field survey was carried out in 1996. Data show the existence of three different groups (or families) of seismic events: 1) long period events, with a quasi-monochromatic spectral content (1-3 Hz peak frequency) and a duration of more than 50 s, often occurring in small swarms lasting from several minutes to some day; 2) volcanic tremor, with a spectral shape similar to the long period events but with a duration of several minutes (2-10); 3) hybrid events, with a waveform characterised by the presence of a high frequency initial phase, followed by a low frequency phase with characteristics similar to those of the long period events. The high frequency phase of the hybrid events was analysed using polarisation techniques, showing the presence of P waves. This phase is presumably located at short epicentral distances and shallow source depth. All the analysed seismic events show back-azimuths between 120 and 330 degrees from north (corresponding to zones of volcanic activity) showing no seismic activity in the middle of the caldera. Particle motion, Fourier spectral and spectrogram analysis show that the low frequency part of the three groups of the seismic signals have similar patterns. Moreover careful observations show that the high frequency phase which characterises the hybrid events is present in the long period and in the tremor events, even with lower signal to noise ratios. This evidence suggests that long period events are events in which the high frequency part is simply difficult to observe, due to a very shallow source and/or hypocentral distance higher than that of hybrids, while the tremor is composed of rapidly occurring hybrid events. We propose a possible interpretation for the three groups of seismic events. These may be generated by multiple pressure-steps due to the rapid phase change from liquid to vapour in a shallow aquifer which comes in contact with hot materials. The pressure change can put a crack in resonance or excite the generation of multiple surface waves modes in the shallow layered structure.

Beschreibung: The Cerro de los Batallones (Los Batallones Butte) is located in the central-northern area of the Madrid Basin, central Spain. Nine vertebrates localities containing a large variety of mammals of Upper Vallesian Age (Late Miocene) have been found associated with the sediments forming the butte. From bottom to top, these sediments consist of magnesian lutite beds (Unit I), paleosols formed of sepiolite and opal (Unit II), and siliclastic, marlstone and carbonate beds (Unit III). The set of ERT profiles developed in Los Batallones Butte have demonstrate that electrical imaging techniques are an estimable tool for the characterization and prospecting of fossil sites developed in fine-grained siliciclastic sequences. These localities contain an exceptionally rich, varied and well-preserved vertebrate fauna together with invertebrate and plant fossils. Carnivore species are strikingly well represented at Batallones 1 and 3, and large herbivore species, such as mastodons, rhinoceros and giraffes, at Batallones 2, 4, 5 and 10. The taphonomical studies, together with the morphological features shown by the sedimentary fills of the mammal localities, permit an overall interpretation of these deposits as vertebrate traps. The study of these localities should offer a significant contribution to our understanding of the formation pattern of trap-like paleontological sites - which so far have been typically reported in karstic-type systems -, as well as an important source of paleobiological information about numerous vertebrate groups.

Beschreibung: Abundant fossils of the bear Indarctos atticus (Weithofer, 1888) from the Lower Turolian (MN11) site of Crevillente 2 (Alicante, Spain) and some new material from the Middle Turolian (MN12) of Concud and Valdecebro 5 (Teruel, Spain) are described. On the other hand some dental remains from Crevillente 2 are identified as Indarctos sp. cf. I. vireti Villalta & Crusafont, 1943 on the basis of their small size. The status of different Indarctos species are discussed.

Beschreibung: We introduce the Complex-Step-Finite-Difference method (CSFDM) as a generalization of the well-known Finite-Difference method (FDM) for solving the acoustic and elastic wave equations. We have found a direct relationship between modelling the second-order wave equation by the FDM and the first-order wave equation by the CSFDM in 1-D, 2-D and 3-D acoustic media. We present the numerical methodology in order to apply the introduced CSFDM and show an example for wave propagation in simple homogeneous and heterogeneous models. The CSFDM may be implemented as an extension into pre-existing numerical techniques in order to obtain fourth- or sixth-order accurate results with compact three time-level stencils. We compare advantages of imposing various types of initial motion conditions of the CSFDM and demonstrate its higher-order accuracy under the same computational cost and dispersion–dissipation properties. The introduced method can be naturally extended to solve different partial differential equations arising in other fields of science and engineering.

Beschreibung: Inversions for the full slip distribution of earthquakes provide detailed models of earthquake sources, but stability and non-uniqueness of the inversions is a major concern. The problem is underdetermined in any realistic setting, and significantly different slip distributions may translate to fairly similar seismograms. In such circumstances, inverting for a single best model may become overly dependent on the details of the procedure. Instead, we propose to perform extended fault inversion trough falsification. We generate a representative set of heterogeneous slipmaps, compute their forward predictions, and falsify inappropriate trial models that do not reproduce the data within a reasonable level of mismodelling. The remainder of surviving trial models forms our set of coequal solutions. The solution set may contain only members with similar slip distributions, or else uncover some fundamental ambiguity such as, for example, different patterns of main slip patches. For a feasibility study, we use teleseismic body wave recordings from the 2012 September 5 Nicoya, Costa Rica earthquake, although the inversion strategy can be applied to any type of seismic, geodetic or tsunami data for which we can handle the forward problem. We generate 10 000 pseudo-random, heterogeneous slip distributions assuming a von Karman autocorrelation function, keeping the rake angle, rupture velocity and slip velocity function fixed. The slip distribution of the 2012 Nicoya earthquake turns out to be relatively well constrained from 50 teleseismic waveforms. Two hundred fifty-two slip models with normalized L1-fit within 5 per cent from the global minimum from our solution set. They consistently show a single dominant slip patch around the hypocentre. Uncertainties are related to the details of the slip maximum, including the amount of peak slip (2–3.5 m), as well as the characteristics of peripheral slip below 1 m. Synthetic tests suggest that slip patterns such as Nicoya may be a fortunate case, while it may be more difficult to unambiguously reconstruct more distributed slip from teleseismic data.
