    Description: This work presents the results of a mineralogical and isotopic (18O, 13C, 87Sr/86Sr) study on xenoliths ejected during the famous 79AD Plinian eruption of Vesuvius. They are considered to be representative of the upper parts of the crystallizing margins of the magma chamber and also of the associated skarn shell. The aim of this study is to describe the thermometamorphic and metasomatic processes which took place at the 79AD magma chamber/wall-rock interface. The results of our research indicate that metasomatism of carbonate wall rocks of the 79AD Vesuvius magma chamber took place due to the infiltration of magmatic fluids, which were exsolved from the peripheral parts of the magma chamber itself. These fluids drive Fe, K, Si, Al and trace elements such as REE, Nb, U, Th, Zr, W, Sb, Pb extracted from the magma into the carbonate host-rocks, thus producing exoskarn. No evidence of later re-equilibrium with low temperature external fluids of meteoric origin was observed. This indicates that only the prograde early stage of skarn formation is recorded in these xenoliths.

    Description: The volcanic history of each active volcano is assembled through detailed field work that establishes stratigraphic position of the eruption deposits, radiometric ages and study of historical sources. The volcanic history is important for hazard assessment, thus the scientific community must validate the strength of conclusions. Fedele et al. (2011) propose a new reference chronostratigraphic framework for Holocene Phlegrean activity, and discuss the implications for the Campi Flegrei (CF) volcanic history and related volcanic hazards. In particular, the authors propose to amend the previously established Holocene chronostratigraphy of volcanic activity of Campi Flegrei caldera, presented in Di Vito et al. (1999), Orsi et al. (2004), Isaia et al. (2009). The proposed changes of Fedele et al. (2011) are based on new geochronologic data, a calibration of already existing 14C ages, and a stratigraphic survey (Perrotta et al. 2010). However, the new chronological data are limited and pre-existing stratigraphic studies have not been considered, and this yields an eruption chronology that is inconsistent with the actual stratigraphic framework.

    Description: The Campi Flegrei caldera is one of the highest risk volcanic areas on the Earth. Our research documents a 150 year-long period of intense volcanism following less than 200 years of repose after the Agnano-Monte Spina Plinian eruption (4.1 ka). The new data show that the renewal of volcanism was preceded by an uplift of a few tens of meters, triggered by mafic refilling of reservoirs at depths of 3 km or less. Our studies also indicate for the first time the occurrence of contemporaneous eruptions from at locations in different sectors of the caldera. These results suggest that a future eruptive crisis will likely be preceded by several meters of caldera-wide uplift in response to magma movements at depth. The trend of uplift of the caldera since 1969 may thus represent the unrest expected before a renewal of volcanism within an interval of decades to centuries.
