Beschreibung: The aim of this paper is to describe the theoretical fundamentals, the main features and some geophysical applications of a software (STRAINGPS) suitably implemented to estimate the strain tensor from repeated GPS surveys of deformation control networks. Current softwares developed for geophysical applications generally estimate or compute bi-dimensional strain, since this is the most requested use. On the contrary, this software allows for a three-dimensional (3D) estimate of the strain tensor and does not need a subdivision of the network in triangles. It accounts for all the significant coordinate differences (or velocities) coming from repeated surveys and estimates the strain tensor components by the least squares method, starting from the hypothesis of one homogeneous strain field. Moreover, some tests to control both model adequacy and detecting outliers are performed, allowing a subdivision of the field into sub-domains with homogeneous strain field. We applied this software to three real geophysical situations. The first concerns the geodynamic (long term) induced deformation at regional scale, by estimating extensional strain rate ((0.22 ± 0.06) × 10−7) per year in central-southern Italy across the Apennines chain; the second is co-seismic strain by the assessment of the strike slip style of the Molise (central-southern Italy) earthquakes (31 October and 1 November 2002); the last regards the subsidence induced strain in the Travale-Radicondoli (central Italy) exploitation area. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Beschreibung: Many moderate events reported by Italian earthquake catalogues (either historical or recent) are listed with an epicentral intensity derived from intensity-magnitude relationships or evaluated based on preliminary sources. Contradictions may arise among different catalogues when the effects of a given earthquake are not assessed through a specific macroseismic study as each catalogue uses its own criteria for evaluating the intensity. In this paper we present the case of the 19 June 1975 earthquake, a ML=5.1 (ING seismological bulletin) event that occurred in the Gargano area (southern Italy). The intensity reported by the ING catalogue is VIII MCS (estimated from magnitude), that reported by the NT4.1 catalogue is VI MCS, while the PFG catalogue does not report any intensity. The case of this event is well representative of a period during which macroseismic studies were not undertaken systematically in Italy. In this paper we reasses the macroseismic intensity of this event using procedures implemented and routinely used at ING.

Beschreibung: In this paper we present some remarks about the Porto S. Giorgio seismic sequence, occurred in central Italy on 3 July 1987 with a main shock of Md=4.9. The sequence, occurred in a low seismicity zone, was characterized by absence of foreshocks. Focal mechanisms of the four greatest shocks, derived from P-first arrivals, show compressive solution with negligible strike components; it seems to confirm the tectonic trend of thrust faults remarked by some authors. Some characteristics of the sequence underline the coupling between the cumulative frequency vs. time trend and the modality of a Kelvin's solid strain release which has a time relaxation of about 5 days. Furthermore we analyse b-value and Gutemberg relation to evaluate the energy release. Finally macroseismic analysis related to the felt area is shown with isoseismal map

Beschreibung: The Colli Albani volcanic complex, located in central Italy about 15km SE of Rome, has been dominated by periodic eruptive histories started about 561 ka and ending with the most recent and voluminous activity of the Albano maar (〈70 ka) phase. Earthquakes of moderate intensity, gas emissions and significant ground deformations are the recent evidences of a residual activity. We decided to start a monitoring test by installing as first step three GPS permanent stations on the volcanic structure, in sites easily accessible. The analysis of about 2 years of GPS observations has evidenced a peculiar velocity pattern of the Colli Albani stations with respect to those located nearby, but outside the volcano edifice. With respect to Eurasia, the horizontal velocities are NE directed with magnitudes of 2.2±1.4mm/year (RDPI), 3.0±0.8mm/year (RMPO) and 3.3±1.2mm/year (NEMI). The uplift rates are determined with minor accuracy and range from 3.3 and 6.0mm/year. We used a non-linear inversion algorithm to determine the best-fit parameters for a Mogi spherical source based on the Levenberg–Marquardt least squares approach. The best-fit is obtained with a source at 4.6km depth beneath thewestern flank of the volcano and a volume variation of 3.6×10−4 km3/year. This result is in agreement with the volume rate retrieved by PS-InSAR technique and rather different from the rate inferred from leveling surveys. Consequently, non-linear trends of the hydrothermal system charge cannot be excluded apriori and the continuous GPS monitoring should be considered a priority in assessing the hazard of the Colli Albani.

Beschreibung: Earthquakes deliver in few seconds the elastic energy accumulated in hundreds of years. Where and when will be the next earthquake remains a difficult task due to the chaotic behaviour of seismicity and the present lack of available tools to measure the threshold of the crustal strength. However, the analysis of the background strain rate in Italy and the comparison with seismicity shows that larger earthquakes occur with higher probability in areas of lower strain rate. We present a statistical study in which a relationship linking the earthquake size (magnitude) and the total strain rate (SR) is found. We combine the information provided by the Gutenberg–Richter law (GR) of earthquake occurrence and the probability density distribution of SR in the Italian area. Following a Bayesian approach, we found a simple family of exponential decrease curves describing the probability that an event of a given size occurs within a given class of SR. This approach relies on the evidence that elastic energy accumulates in those areas where faults are locked and the SR is lower. Therefore, in tectonically active areas, SR lows are more prone to release larger amount of energy with respect to adjacent zones characterised by higher strain rates. The SR map of Italy, compared with 5 years seismicity supports this result and may become a powerful tool for identifying the areas more prone to the next earthquakes.

Beschreibung: The Colli Albani volcanic complex (Rome, Italy) has been dominated by episodic eruptions commencing around 561 ka and ending with the most recent activity of the Albano maar phase (\70 ka). Earthquakes of moderate intensity, gas emissions and significant ground deformations are the recent evidences of a residual activity. Former geodetic data from leveling surveys, GPS stations and InSAR observations tracked ongoing significant uplift of the order of few mm/year near the Colli Albani western flank. Different uplift rates were detected by each technique in different time spans, suggesting also the possibility of sporadic recharge of the hydrothermal system. The renewed high precision leveling data from IGMI survey carried out in 1997/1999 and the last leveling survey carried out in 2006 show that the uplift along the route is currently significant at an average rate of *3 mm/year. Radar interferograms from ALOS satellite show uplift rate of *6 mm/year, southwest of the central sector of the leveling route. We have undertaken a joint inversion of the various geodetic data (vertical rates from leveling surveys, GPS site velocities and InSAR observations acquired by ALOS satellite) using a nonlinear inversion technique to estimate the parameters of a point-pressure source, possibly capable of explaining the ongoing deformation at Colli Albani volcano.

Beschreibung: On March 11th, 2011 (at 05:46:23 UTC) a megaearthquake (M 9.0) occurred near the NE coast of Honshu island ( Japan), originated near the subduction plate boundary between the Pacific and the North America plates. The epicenter has been located at about 130 km East of Sendai city, at a depth of about 32 km. This seismic event has been followed by a devastating tsunami. The location, the geometric parameters, the focal mechanism, are in agreement with the occurrence of the earthquake along the subduction plate boundary. The initial seismological analysis indicated that a surface of about 300 km x 150 km over the fault moved upwards of 30-40 m. The Tohoku-Oki INGV Team has made available a wide and multisciplinary expertise to investigate the different scientific issues concerning the earthquake. Indeed from Seismology to Geomorphology, from Remote Sensing to GPS, from Tsunami to Source Modeling the INGV Team has completed a wide range of analysis, obtaining relevant outcomes that are summarized in this work.

Beschreibung: Two critical items in the energetic budget of a seismic province are the strain rate, which is measured geodetically on the Earth's surface, and the yearly number of earthquakes exceeding a given magnitude. Our study is based on one of the most complete and recent seismic catalogs of Italian earthquakes and on the strain rate map implied by a multiyear velocity solution for permanent GPS stations. For each of 36 homogeneous seismic zones we use the appropriate Gutenberg-Richter relation, which is based on the seismicity catalog, to estimate a seismic strain rate, which is the strain rate associated with the mechanical work due to a coseismic displacement. We show that for each seismic zone, the volume storing most of the elastic energy associated with the long-term deformation, and hence the seismic strain rate, is inversely proportional to the static stress drop. The GPS-derived strain rate for each seismic zone limits the corresponding seismic strain rate, and an upper bound for the average stress drop is estimated. We show that the implied regional static stress drop varies from 0.1 to 5.7 MPa for catalog earthquakes in the moment magnitude range [4.5–7.3]. The stress drop results are independent of the regional a and b parameters and heat flow but are very sensitive to the assumed maximum magnitude of a seismic province. The data do not rule out the hypothesis that the stress drop positively correlates with the time elapsed after the largest earthquake recorded in each seismic zone.

Beschreibung: In this paper, we analyse the distributions of number of events (N) and seismic energy (E) on the Earth's surface and along its radius as obtained from the global declustered catalogue of large independent events (M≥7.0), dissipating about 95% of the Earth's elastic budget. The latitude distribution of the seismic event density is almost symmetric with respect to the equator and the seismic energy flux distribution is bimodal; both have their medians near the equator so that they are equally distributed in the two hemispheres. This symmetry with respect to the equator suggests that the Earth's rotational dynamics contributes to modulate the long-term tectonic processes. The distributions of number and energy of earthquakes versus depth are not uniform aswell: 76% of the total earthquakes dissipates about 60% of the total energy in the first ~50 km; only 6% of events dissipates about 20% of the total amount of energy in a narrow depth interval, at the lower boundary of the upper mantle (550–680 km). Therefore, only the remaining 20% of energy is released along most of the depth extent of subduction zones (50–550 km). Since the energetic release along slabs is a minor fraction of the total seismic budget, the role of the slab pull appears as ancillary, if any, in driving plate tectonics. Moreover the concentration of seismic release in the not yet subducted lithosphere suggests that the force moving the plates acts on the uppermost lithosphere and contemporaneously all over the Earth's outer shell, again supporting a rotational/tidal modulation.
