Description: This paper proposes a digital enhancement tool for magnetic anomaly maps. The magnetic anomaly map is decomposed by means of Singular Value Decomposition into a number of orthogonal basis. The dataset is then filtered, after eigenvalues evaluation, accordingly to a specific variance pattern. The filtering product is efficient in enhancing subtle and hidden features. The proposed filtering procedure is first tested with a synthetic signal, then it has been applied to the Cape Roberts (Antarctica) aeromagnetic survey, flown over an off-shore rift basin. The proposed method appears to be efficient as noise removal and act as a digital enhancement tools able to provide TMI anomaly maps which can reveal hidden lineaments, otherwise not visible. The results have been checked against independent data.

Description: This paper highlights some magnetic evidences revealed by a recent marine magnetic survey ran near the Margherita di Savoia shoreline, Puglia (Italy). The survey has been planned to probe one of the expected settlement site not perused yet. The accurate elaboration of high density total magnetic field intensity data shows some features which can be interpreted as markers of harbor framework, at present time partially uprooted. A model of the bodies which cause the magnetic anomaly is also provided.

Description: In this work we show the results of a resistivity tomography performed over the shallow part of a large cave system in the Mt.Armetta karst, Pennavaira valley northwestern Italy. The cave has been explored and surveyed by the authors themselves, thus a precise knowledge of size and shape of the subsurface voids is available. The cave, whose shallowest part exhibits narrow passages and large chambers, was developed in the Mesozoic sedimentary cover(Caprauna Armetta tectonic unit), an allochtonous nappe characterized by four deformation phases. The main target of the experiment is a region located at about 30 m below surface precisely spotted by ve 235m long ERT sections. Since cave develops in a windy summit area, the long-term stability of an eolic power plant tower, located over a karst void, is also considered. As a matter of fact, the footings of the eolic towers (approx 100 m high) may interfere with unpredictable shallow hollows, whose presence, in the power plant area, is more than likely.

Description: Integrated geophysical investigations of karst structures were carried out in Liguria and Piedmont (NW Italy); this paper refers to the S. Pietro dei Monti doline, in the karst area of Mt. Carmo (Savona). The techniques used in the integrated study were magnetics, electromagnetics and seismic refraction. The target was to identify, without drilling, the nature of the doline, for example if it is of dissolution or collapse type. A preliminary susceptibility sampling of the outcrop and topsoil and the diffuse fractures with a probable water seepage suggested magnetics and VLF electromagnetics. Such methods applied in an area with an extremely low cultural noise allowed modelling of the buried structure of the doline.

Description: The analysis of geomagnetic field variations is a useful tool to detect electrical conductivity contrasts within the Earth. Lateral resolution of outlined patterns depends on the array dimensions and density of measurement sites over the investigated area. The inspection depth is constrained by the period of geomagnetic variations considered in data processing. Regions with significant geological features such as boundaries of continental plates, marginal areas of contact between tectonic units or other geodynamical processes, are of primary interest for the application of the MagnetoVariational (MV) method. In the last ten years, in the frame of the ElectroMagnetic (EM) sounding techniques in applied geophysics, this method has been applied in Italy by researchers of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica, Rome, the Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra, Universitá di Genova and the Czech Science Academy of Prague. The Ivrea body in the Northwestern Alps and their junction with the Apennine chain, the micro-plate of the Sardinian-Corsican system and, recently, the central part of the peninsula along Tyrrhenian-Adriatic lithospheric transects were investigated. Studies in time and frequency-domain used in the first investigations, have been followed by more refined analysis involving tests on the induced EM field dimension, computations of single site Transfer Functions (TFs) through Parkinson arrows' and Fourier maps in the Hypothetical Event technique (HE). It was possible to describe the electrical conductivity distribution in the inner part of the SW Alpine arc and to confirm the presence of lithospheric and asthenospheric anomalies obtained by other geophysical methods. For the Sardinia-Corsica system, 2D and 3D inversion models highlighted the existence of two major conducting bodies, one north of Corsica, and the other south of Sardinia. In Central Italy, the regional electrical conductivity distribution pointed out a deep conductive structure beneath the Apennines and a very resistive root for this part of the mountain chain.
