    Beschreibung: Deep earthquakes exhibit strong variabilities in their rupture and aftershock characteristics, yet their physical failure mechanisms remain elusive. The 2018 Mw 8.2 and Mw 7.9 Tonga‐Fiji deep earthquakes, the two largest ever recorded in this subduction zone, occurred within days of each other. We investigate these events by performing waveform analysis, teleseismic P wave backprojection, and aftershock relocation. Our results show that the Mw 8.2 earthquake ruptured fast (4.1 km/s) and excited frequency‐dependent seismic radiation, whereas the Mw 7.9 earthquake ruptured slowly (2.5 km/s). Both events lasted ∼35 s. The Mw 8.2 earthquake initiated in the highly seismogenic, cold core of the slab and likely ruptured into the surrounding warmer materials, whereas the Mw 7.9 earthquake likely ruptured through a dissipative process in a previously aseismic region. The contrasts in earthquake kinematics and aftershock productivity argue for a combination of at least two primary mechanisms enabling rupture in the region.

    Notizen: The hydrodynamic degradation of high molecular weight poly(acrylamide-co-Na acrylate) in 1M NaCl in porous media flow was studied as a function of polymer concentration in the dilute and semidilute concentration ranges. Porous media rheometry was used to monitor molecular weight changes due to chain scission. At equivalent superficial velocities of flow through a glass bead pack, polymers at dilute concentrations showed greater loss of molecular weight than polymers at semidilute concentrations.

    Notizen: Abstract Neutral clusters (NH3) n ((CH3)3N) m and (H2O) n ((CH3)3N) m , prepared in a pulsed nozzle supersonic expansion, are ionized by multiphoton ionization and investigated with a reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry technique. The observed mixed cluster ions display a maximum intensity atm=2(n+1) whenn ≦ 5 for (NH3) n ·((CH3)3N) m H+ andm=n+2 whenn ≦ 4 for (H2O) n ((CH3)3N) m H+ indicating that the cluster ions with these combinations have a stable closed shell structure. However, the pattern begins to break down whenn〉5 for ammonia system andn〉4 for water system. Thereupon, the most intense peaks are reached with one molecule less than the pattern required, i.e.m=2(n+1)−1 whenn=6 for (NH3) n ((CH3)3N) m H+ andm=(n+2)−1 whenn=5 for (H2O) n ((CH3)3N) m H+. These findings strongly suggest the onset of hydrogen-bonded ring structures from chain-like ones at critical cluster sizes. This is also supported by the studies of the metastable decomposition.

    Notizen: A modified CaCO3 sorbent with an open internal pore structure is prepared and its sulfation characteristics are investigated in an entrained flow reactor at high temperatures (900-1,100°C) and short contact times (20-600 ms) using small particle sizes (〈 5 μm). The most distinguishing feature of this modified carbonate (MC) is its 70-75% sulfation conversion within 0.5 s, which is substantially higher than any other sorbents published. The MC is prepared by carbonation-precipitation from a calcium hydroxide suspension by optimizing the operating parameters to generate carbonate particles of the desired pore structural properties. The high initial surface area combined with its open pore structure and pore-size distribution of its calcine contribute to its high reactivity. The calcined MC possesses a significant portion of its pore volume in the 50-200 Å range. This size range represents an optimum pore size for sulfation since it provides a reasonably high surface area and is less susceptible than 〈 50 Å pore sizes, to pore filling, or pore-mouth plugging due to the formation of higher molar volume CaSO4. Investigation with other carbonates reveals that a much higher portion of their calcines' porosity lies in the smaller pores, which leads to premature termination of sulfation. Results show the impact of internal pore structure on initial reactivity and ultimate sorbent conversion.

    Notizen: By adjusting the casting conditions, the oxygen permeabilities of poly(4-methyl-pentene-1) (TPX) membranes prepared in this study are in the range of 2.91-7.14 × 10-9 cm3(STP) cm/cm2 s cm Hg and permeability ratio of O2/N2 between 2.7 and 4.4. To increase O2—N2 selectivity, the vinylpyridine is γ-ray irradiation-grafted onto the substrate-TPX membrane. The factors that affect the structure and performance of the grafted membrane considered are: tightness of substrate, kind of solvent for grafting monomers, irradiation conditions, total irradiation dose, and operating temperature and pressure. The O2/N2 selectivities of grafted TPX membranes are significantly improved comparing to that of nongrafted TPX membranes. For example, an O2 permeability of 35.6 × 10-10 cm3(STP) cm/cm2 s cm Hg and an O2/N2 permeability ratio of 7.5 for the grafted membrane can be obtained.
