Notes: Abstract The nonkeratinous proteins of wool can be partly or completely dissolved by controlled enzymatic digestion. A comparison between the keratose content of intact wool and that of wool which has been hydrolysed for 96 h with pronase confirms that specifically all the nonkeratinous components are dissolved out of the wool composite by pronase. The influence of microbial infection can be excluded. The residue of wool after the hydrolysis, i. e., a wool low in nonkeratinous proteins, has a higher internal volume, as measured by mercury porosimetry. The centrifugal swelling test shows that these wool samples also have increased hygroscopy.

Description / Table of Contents: On the Minute Structure of Some ProteinsA report on new results and problems concerning the molecular morphology of the proteins. After characterizing some terms such as globular and fibrillary proteins and α- and β-proteins, theories describing the formation of the fibre proteins are discussed. Selected examples show the present extent of our knowledge concerning the minute molecular structure of the proteins: hemoglobin and myoglobin are those crystallized proteins which are most widely clarified radiographically. The muscle proteins tropomyosin and actin as well as insulin are named as examples for albuminoids which occur as globular molecules or as fibrils, depending on the reaction conditions. Among the typical fibre proteins mentioned at the end of this paper, the keratin deserves particular interest because of the folded form of its peptide chains in the α-keratin modification, which was later recognised as a universal constellation of the polypeptide chains. In the electron microscope the fibrils of the collagen fibre show a very distinct transverse striation, on the cause of which information is given by the most recent research work.
