    Notes: A new surface pretreatment for the preparation of wall-coated open tubular (WCOT) glass capillary columns has been evaluated. This technique involves the application of a non-extractable layer of Superox™-4, a 4,000,000 MW polyethylene glycol, to the glass surface as a pretreatment and deactivation agent. Unlike other polyethylene glycols, Superox-4 is stable at high temperatures (〉 300°C) in the absence of oxygen, coats smoothly onto a bare glass surface and resists droplet formation. WCOT columns (SE-54, Carbowax 20M, and SP-2250) prepared using this technique are compared to columns prepared using a modified Grob [2,3] BaCO3 procedure. The Superox-4 pretreated columns were equal or superior in quality to the BaCO3 pretreated columns, based on the appearance of an activity standard and the effective theoretical plates (Neff) per meter. Chromatograms showing practical application of the WCOT columns prepared using both methods is given.

    Notes: Variations of a procedure have been examined for minimization of the energies, calculated using MM2, of two docked molecules. After doing the intramolecular minimization of the individual molecules, randomized orientations of the rigid molecules were brought together to form complexes and the nonbonded energies of interaction were then minimized. Next, pairs having energies within 4.0 kcal/mol of the most stable pair were minimized further by atom-by-atom relaxation of the complex. Only two repetitions of the last two steps were found to give values within 0.001 kcal/mol in more than 90% of the cases. Compared to two other variations of the procedure, this method appeared to avoid erroneous (local, not global) minima. Finally, this overall procedure was tested against chromatographic data in the literature. Using only the most stable comformer of each species, the results appeared to be in qualitative agreement with fractionation data for enantiomeric aminoethanes on a chiral packing very similar to the one modeled here.

    Notes: Work reported earlier had shown that the addition of 0.07 micron stearate coated ultrafine precipitated CaCO3 (CUPCC) in medium to high molecular weight PVC resulted in a significant improvement in notched Izod impact strength. The improvement was much more dramatic when the filler loading exceeded 10 phr. The addition of CUPCC to low molecular weight PVC had practically no effect on the notched Izod impact strength at equivalent loadings. More recent studies have demonstrated that when CUPCC is added to an impact modified low molecular weight PVC, it dramatically enhances the efficiency of impact modifier. This was found to be consistent with threee general classes of commercially available impact modifiers used in this study. The ability to extend the impact modifier with CUPCC in low molecular weight PVC, which has gained a wide acceptance in injection molding operations, will result in significant cost savings. The effect of CUPCC addition on other key properties and cost benefits will also be presented.
