Notes: Collisions of low-energy Cr(CO)n+ (n = 0, 2, 6) ions with self-assembled monolayer surfaces bearing covalently bound ferrocene groups result in transfer of the cyclopentadienyl ligand into the gas phase as the Cr(C5H5)+ ion. High fluences of Cr+ ions lead to deposition of Cr at the surface and subsequent Xe+ collisions liberate the metal ion. The Cr atoms deposited on the surface appear to be chemically bonded to the cyclopentadienyl rings. The implications of these results for modification of surfaces using ion beams are discussed.

Notes: Raman and IR spectra of NH4Ln(SO4)2 (Ln = Pr, La) were recorded and analysed. The observed bands indicate a centrosymmetric structure for the crystals. Two crystallographically independent SO2-4 groups exist in both compounds. The NH4+ groups form strong hydrogen bonds.

Notes: IR and polarized Raman spectra of a TlLa(SO4)2 · 2H2O crystal were recorded and analysed. The bands observed in the internal mode region of the SO42- ion indicate the presence of two crystallographically distinct SO42- ions in the crystal, in agreement with the x-ray diffraction data. These SO42- ions have stronger S—O bonds than a free SO4 ion. The water molecule forms hydrogen bonds of medium strength.

Notes: Infrared and Raman spectra of LiNH3OHSO4 and LiND3ODSO4 were recorded and analysed. Bands were assigned on the basis of SO4, NH3 and OH vibrations. The symmetric stretching mode in the deuterated compound is found to be at higher frequencies, indicating the existence of strong hydrogen bonds in LiNH3OHSO4. The SO4 ion is distorted in the crystal. A, B and C bands are observed in the OH stretching region, also showing the formation of strong hydrogen bonds.
