Notes: When PVC films containing zinc(II) chloride were heated in the temperature range 65-95°C, broad absorptions developed in the 250-900 nm region with maxima around 610 nm. The development of the color, the rate of which was proportional to the ZnCl2 content, was preceded by an induction period, the length of which depended on the temperature. The activation energy of the process decreased as the ZnCl2 content of the film increased. Color developments in air and in vacuum were compared.

Notes: The distribution of polyenes which results from the chemical dehydrochlorination of poly(vinyl chloride) has been studied in dichloromethane (DCM) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvents. A higher percentage of longer polyenes is formed in DCM than in THF. On the addition of trifluoroacetic acid to DCM solutions of the polyenes, new species are formed with strong absorptions in the region 500-800 nm. The absorptions are probably due to polyenylic ions formed by protonation of the polyenes, and the interrelated changes in their intensities can be explained by the migration of short polyene sequences along the polymer chain with the formation of longer sequences. The species are extremely photosensitive and are bleached in a few seconds with light from a medium-pressure mercury lamp. The relevance of these experiments to the effect of HCl on the polyene distribution and on the rate of photocrosslinking is discussed.

Notes: Photosensitized reactions of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dichloromethane (DCM) solutions of polyene sequences introduced into poly(vinyl chloride) molecules by chemical degradation have been investigated. The distribution of polyenes produced following further thermal degradation in DCM were shifted toward longer sequences than were observed for the same reaction in THF. Benzophenone-sensitized bleaching of the polyene absorption in aerated THF solutions was characterized by induction periods, but the presence of oxygen had little effect on the same reaction in DCM. The bleaching process seems to involve reaction of the polyenes with the tetrahydrofuranyl radical formed by abstraction of the α-hydrogen from THF by triplet benzophenone. No induction periods were observed for benzoin-sensitized reactions, but the rate of reaction was faster in DCM than in THF. The differences are discussed in terms of the difference in reactivity of the alkyl and alkoxy radicals.

Notes: Films prepared from thermally degraded poly(vinyl chloride) were photolyzed in the presence of hydrogen chloride. When the light was filtered through a Pyrex disk, the absorbance in the region between 270 nm and about 415 nm decreased and reached a minimum value but the absorbance increased at wavelengths shorter than 270 nm and longer than 415 nm. Maximum bleaching occurred at a wavelength which depended on that of the irradiating light. When the Pyrex filter was omitted, an additional slower photodehydrochlorination reaction was superimposed on the photobleaching reaction. Photolysis of hexane or ethanol solutions of 1,8-diphenyloctatetra-1,3,5,7-ene and hydrogen chloride showed a similar reaction involving bleaching of the absorption of the polyene structure. The problems of using absorbance as an indication of the extent of the photodegradation of poly(vinyl chloride) are discussed.

Notes: Dilute (0.23%) tetrahydrofuran solutions of chemically degraded poly(vinyl chloride) were irradiated with monochromatic light (307,320, or 354 nm) after being degassed or saturated with oxygen. The rates of the resulting photobleaching reactions of the polyene sequences present depended in a complex way on the wavelength of the light used and on the presence or absence of oxygen. During 307-nm irradiation an initial fast decrease in absorbance at 307 nm, which proceeded with a rapidly decreasing quantum yield and which was unaffected by oxygen, was followed by a slower reaction with constant quantum yield that was strongly inhibited by oxygen. The same general trend was observed for solutions irradiated with 320- or 354-nm light but in each case the rates of changes in absorbance at wavelengths other than those irradiated were complex. A mechanism that involves intra- and intermolecular reactions of the polyenes is suggested to explain the observed effects.
