Notes: The use of titanium and titanium-6% aluminum-4% vanadium alloy for dental and orthopedic implants has increased in the last decade. The implants are presumed to be compatible because oseointegration, bony apposition, and cell attachment are known. However, the cellular association of titanium and vanadium have remained unknown. This study examined the uptake of salts or fretting corrosion products. Titanium was not observed to be toxic to the cells. Vanadium was toxic at levels greater than 10 μg/mL. The percentage of cellular association of titanium was shown to be about 10 times that of vanadium. The percentage of cellular association of either element was greater from fretting corrosion than from the addition of salts. The presence of vanadium did not affect the cellular uptake of titanium. The presence of titanium decreased the cell association of vanadium. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description / Table of Contents: Studies on Nitrogen Iodine Compounds. XIV. Quinuclidine and Urotropine as Stabilizers of the Iodonium CationIt was possible to obtain the bis-quinuclidine iodonium cation by reaction of iodine with silver nitrate or perchlorate and quinuclidine in the molar ratio of 1:1:2. This cation is the most stable of the iodonium cations stabilized by tertiary amines so far isolated. By recording the IR and Raman spectra the absorption frequency of the NI stretching vibration could be found and a simple calculation of the force constant could be carried out.The Raman spectrum of bis-urotropine iodonium perchlorate and nitrate showed that the symmetrical NI stretching vibration has a lower value than reported earlier [2].

Description / Table of Contents: Studies on Nitrogen Iodine Compounds. XVIII. Adducts of N-Iodo-hexamethyldisilazane with Quinuclidine and Triethylenediamine for the Preparation of Nitrogentriiodide-Quinuclidine and 2-Nitrogentriiodide-1-TriethylenediamineThe adducts of N-iodo-hexamethyldisilazane with quinuclidine and triethylenediamine, respectively, are prepared and characterized by spectra. They probably contain linear NIN groups. Reaction with iodine chloride gives adducts of nitrogentriiodide with quinuclidine and triethylenediamine, respectively, so far not prepared. According to the spectra these adducts show a strcuture which is different from the one shown by adducts of nitrogentriiodide with tertiary N bases so far prepared.
