    Notes: The energy stored in polystyrene after plastic deformation is measured by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique. Similar to metals, the stored energy increases with plastic straining, first rapidly, and then more slowly, and finally the stored energy seems to approach a saturation value (about 1 cal/gram). By comparing to the plastic work done, the fraction stored ranges from 30 percent after 10 percent compression to 10 percent after 60 percent compression. The fraction is about twice as large as that of copper. The release of stored energy has two distinct parts, one below Tg and the other above Tg. Most of the strain recovery seems to accompany the second part. By using the Kissinger plot, the second part has an activation energy, of 142 kcal/mole which is about 10 percent larger than that of compressive strain recovery.

    Notes: The effect of cold work on the transport of liquid methanol in crosslinked PMMA disks has been determined at temperatures from 35-56°C. Deformed samples absorb at fast rates with kinetics that approach those of Fickian diffusion. Undeformed samples sorb at lower rates and the kinetics tend toward those of Case II transport. Shape recovery accompanied swelling in deformed samples. Samples saturated with methanol were desorbed in cyclohexanol. Resorption of desorbed samples showed fast rates for both deformed and undeformed samples and matched those of the absorption cycle in deformed samples. An analogy is made between the microstructure due to cold work and due to swelling.

    Notes: Second-order kinetics were found applicable to the isothermal enthalpy release after quenching from a high temperature. The kinetic behavior was unaffected by different amounts of initial excess enthalpy. The activation enthalpy obtained from the temperature dependence of the second order rate constant was 200 kcal/mol or 837 kJ/mol which could be compared with 736 kJ/mol for volume recovery in a similar temperature range relative to Tg.

    Notes: The DSC thermograms of the shear band material cut out by a diamond saw to include some undeformed material revealed two Tg's clearly separated by about 10°C. The first Tg was at the same temperature as the Tg of the undeformed material. The second Tg, which was at a higher temperature than the first Tg, appeared shortly after the shear strain recovery during the heating of the shear band material in the DSC. When the shear strain in the shear band was partially reversed by mechanical means before taking the DSC thermogram, the ΔT between the two Tg's decreased and when the shear strain was mechanically reversed to almost zero, the second Tg disappeared. The stored energy of shear band material was found to be similar to that of the bulk compressed material for large strains. Dimensional recovery during heating of specimens with thick and fine bands was similar, both taking place above Tg.

    Notes: Some recent observations on shear bands in polymers are reviewed. These include intrinsic properties such as the mechanism of formation, the intersection of shear bands, the rate of propagation with and without obstacles, recovery of shear strain by annealing, and the stored energy in shear bands. Mechanical responses include the shear yielding criteria, reverse shear behavior and the Bauschinger effect, and the fracture of and at shear bands. Environmental effects include methanol transport in shear bands and in deformed poly(methvl methacrylate) in the region of mixed Fickian and case II behavior and methanol crazing of a shear banded material.
