Notes: Ionizing radiation was employed to graft bromostyrene (BSy) onto poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabric. The fire-retardant effect of the polymerized monomer on PET fabric was evaluated both by LOI tests and by DTA and TGA methods under conditions of controlled total combustion. The yields of HBr and BSy evolved during pyrolysis in the presence and absence of oxygen were determined. A linear correlation was found between ΔOI values and yields of HBr, and the implications of this finding are discussed. It is suggested on the strength of DTA and TGA results under total combustion conditions that the fire-retardant effect of poly(bromostyrene) manifests itself mainly by a physical-mode mechanism through a significant reduction in the release of flammable gases.

Notes: Using the epoxy resins Epon 828 (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A) and DEN 438 (an epoxylated novalak) with chlorendie anhydride as the curing agent, a series of formulations were developed having a very wide range in the anhydride: resin ratio (40-160 phr). This range was made possible by the use of metal chelate catalysis. While these systems were not evaluated for fire retardancy, it is anticipated that they would exhibit this property dependent on their chlorine contents.

Notes: An instrument for measuring the force of adhesion between intraocular lens materials and the endothelium of excised rabbit corneas was constructed. The adhesion force was measured for polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polyhydroxyethylmethacrylate (PHEMA), Duragel (amino-polyamide hydrogel), PMMA surface grafted with polyvinylpyrolidone, and PMMA surface treated with sodium hyaluronate (Healon). The force of adhesion was reduced considerably when the PMMA surface was modified with a hydrophilic polymer coating. This is consistent with previous studies showing reduced endothelium cell damage for hydrophilic polymer coated intraocular lenses. Adhesive forces were also decreased by addition of polyvinyl alcohol or gelatin to the saline solution in which the corneas were immersed. Extension of this type of measurement to pericardium, vascular endothelium, and peritoneum surfaces may also be important to understand tissue damage problems in general surgery.

Notes: The paper deals with the design of eccentrically loaded sandwich panels in civil engineering structures. A theoretical analysis taking into account the non-linear stress-strain properties of the materials and the influence of shear deformations is proposed. A computer program based on the described algorithm is used to solve a numerical example. It is found that the Newton-Raphson procedure both in the solution of strains at individual sections and in the step by step procedure over the whole structure converges rapidly. Thus the method is suitable for the evaluation of the critical load due to strength failure or loss of stability.

An mehreren technischen Prozessen, z. B. der Polymerisation und Isomerisierung von Olefinen oder der Hydroformylierung von Olefinen, sind σ-π-Umlagerungen beteiligt.

Notes: Photochemical response of two thick photodielectric holographic recording systems was studied by using a 488 nm argon laser line. These systems are made of poly(methyl methacrylate) or poly(methyl α-cyanoacrylate) with p-benzoquinone as sensitizer. It was found that in both systems, photochemically induced branching, followed by crosslinking of the polymeric chains provide the major effects that modulate the index of refraction of these materials. The change in polymer structure as measured by intrinsic viscosity was correlated to the change in index of refraction, by which the holographic recording process is accomplished.
