Notes: Amorphous polyarylene ether ketones were examined in the glassy state by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and in the melt by standard rheological techniques. Specimens were well-characterized fractions of two isomeric structures. PALS clearly shows that the polymer with meta linkages in its backbone contains larger voids (〉 0.25 nm radius). Thus despite their similar bulk densities, the two materials must pack very differently on a local scale. On the other hand, the free volumes inferred from the WLF treatment of melt viscosity data are practically identical in both materials ca. 4% at Tg. The comparison between techniques sheds some light on the distribution of free volume. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The kinetics of the aromatic nucleophilic substitution (SNAr) reactions of 1,2-dinitrobenzene (1,2-DNB) with butylamine (BA) and piperidine (PIP) were investigated as a function of the amine concentration and temperature, in chloroform, ethyl acetate, tetrahydrofuran (THF), acetonitrile (ACN), dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO). benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene and diisopropyl ether. In the set of solvents consisting of ethyl acetate, THF, ACN, DMF and DMSO, neither reaction is catalysed (kA = k1). The sequence and range of reactivity for BA and PIP are similar in these solvents. These results indicate that reactions in which nitro in the leaving group behave differently from SNAr reactions with other leaving groups, such as halogens or alkoxy groups, since an intramolecular hydrogen bond may be expected between the leaving nitro group and the ammonium H of the nucleophiles. The correlations of the rate coefficients obtained with Taft and Kamlet's solvatochromic method support these conclusions. On the other hand, these reactions show mild acceleration with relatively non-polar solvents such as the aromatics and diisopropyl ether. The donor properties of these solvents and experiments with solvent mixtures suggest the formation of electron donor-acceptor complexes between them and 1,2-DNB. Hence the preferential solvation of 1,2-DNB by the donor solvent accounts for the mechanism observed.

Notes: Quiescent cultures of density arrested BALB/c-3T3 cells have been sensitized to the growth stimulatory action of the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF). Sensitization was achieved by depriving the cultures of PDGF prior to growth stimulation and was noted after transfer of cultures from medium supplemented with 10% serum to medium containing either an equivalent concentration of platelet-poor plasma or a low concentration (0.5%) of serum. Sensitized cultures required less pure PDGF for growth stimulation than non-sensitized ones. In addition such cultures required less mitogen to synthesize a PDGF modulated major excreted protein (MEP). The mechanism of sensitization was investigated. Sensitized cultures did not bind more PDGF than non-sensitized ones. Rather, sensitization appeared to result from the loss of cells that occurred when cultures were deprived of PDGF. Such a loss increased the amount of PDGF available per cell, causing a higher percentage of cells to enter the S phase. Similarly, the amount of PDGF per cell regulated MEP synthesis. Furthermore, in non-sensitized cultures (containing the same number of cells), the absolute quantity rather than the concentration of PDGF regulated DNA synthesis. It appears that the amount of PDGF per cell modulates mitogenesis.

Notes: Cytochrome b5 is unmasked on the removal of ribosomes by chemical degranulation of rat liver microsomes. Reattachment of ribosomes to stripped membranes remasks this enzyme on the membrane surface. This haemoprotein may be involved either in the attachment of ribosomes to reticular membranes or in protein biosynthesis by membrane-bound ribosomes. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Description / Table of Contents: Synthese und Eigenschaften von Tetraalkoxyaluminaten und deren Kupfer(II)-KomplexeTetraisopropoxyaluminate zeigen Alkoholyse-Reaktionen mit verschiedenen Alkoholen und Acetylaceton unter Bildung von Cu[Al(OR)4]2 (worin RO ist: Methoxy-, Ethoxy-, 2,2,2-Trifluoroethoxy-, 2,2,2-Trichloroethoxy-, 1,3-Dibromo-2-propoxy-, n-Butoxy-, tert-Butoxy-, Pentoxy- und Acetylaceton).
Notes: Tetraisopropoxyaluminate of copper undergoes alcoholysis reactions with various alcohols and acetylacetone to yield Cu[Al(OR)4]2, where RO = methoxy, ethoxy, 2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy, 2,2,2-trichloroethoxy, 1,3,-dibromo-2-propoxy, n-butoxy, teriary butoxy and pentoxy amyl and acetylacetone. Various physico-chemical studies like infrared, visible reflectance, and electron spin resonance and magnetic susceptibility measurements as well as molecular weight and elemental analysis have been made to throw light on the structural features of these derivatives. These studies suggest an octahedral environment for copper(II) in these derivatives.
