    Notes: By applying a temperature profile to the system, the concentration of the extract product in a countercurrent adsorption separation process may be increased relative to the maximum concentration attainable under isothermal conditions. To achieve the required temperature profile in a simulated countercurrent system it is necessary to heat and cool the columns in sequence as the feed and product draw-off points are switched through the bed. The practical feasibility of operating the system in this way has been demonstrated experimentally for the separation of glucose-fructose mixtures. By maintaining a temperature difference of 30-35°C across the bed an extract product containing 28% fructose and about 1% glucose was obtained, at steady state, from a feed containing 25 wt. % of each sugar.

    Notes: Some earlier observations on the influence of molecular weight, plasticizer, and irradiation on the thermal conductivity of polymers is reviewed. Also some new data on polystyrene and some new calculations based on the theory of Hansen and Ho are presented. These data show almost a two fold increase in the thermal conductivity of polystyrene as the molecular weight goes from 900 to 100,000. Data on the moleculer weight effect on thermal conductivity appear to be consistent with the theoretical calculations.

    Notes: Laser desorption Fourier transform mass spectrometry was used to characterize the cis-syn cyclobutane photodimers of uracil-uracil, uracil-thymine and thymine-thymine. This soft ionization technique generated [M — H]- ions as well as some fragment ions. Investigation of the laser desorption process indicated that gas-phase dimerization reactions do not occur for pyrimidine monomers and dimers under these experimental conditions. Collisional dissociation of the [M — H]- ions provided structural information for the pyrimidine rings of the dimers. The fragment ions observed in the collisional dissociation spectra of these cyclobutane dimers suggested rearrangement of the [M — H]- parent ions to a macrocycle prior to dissociation.

    Notes: In order to further the understanding of protein-surface interactions in the coagulation system, we have chosen to study plasma protein adsorption onto heparin immobilized surfaces. Heparin-binding proteins are abundant in plasma: a search of amino acid sequences revealed that many plasma proteins have possible heparin binding sites. Plasma protein adsorption to the heparinized surfaces is monitored by a novel technique in which the solution depletion of proteins is analytically determined using quantitative two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-D PAGE). This method enables simultaneous, quantitative detection of the majority of plasma proteins before, during, and after their adsorption onto high surface area adsorbents. Using computerized densitometry of silverstained 2-D PAGE gels, the amount of each protein can be determined from the integrated optical density of each protein “spot.” Kinetics of adsorption and adsorption isotherms of four important heparin binding proteins, antithrombin III (ATIII), complement factor C3 (C3), apolipoprotein AI (Apo-AI) and apolipoprotein AIV (Apo-AIV) are reported in this paper. From the adsorption isotherms, the apparent binding constants of each protein-immobilized heparin complex, Ka, were calculated. The surface binding constants were of the same order of magnitude as the respective solution binding constants in the literature. The surface binding constants followed the same order as the respective solution binding constants: Ka (ATIII) 〉 Ka (Apo-AIV) 〉 Ka (C3) 〉 Ka (Apo-AI), indicating that protein binding to the immobilized heparin used is not essentially different from solution binding.

    Notes: A new mathematical formulation, called the pseudovorticity-velocity formulation, of the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented as an alternative to the vorticity-velocity approach. For the model lid-driven cavity flow problem in two and three dimensions, combined with an explicit mixed spectral /finite different numerical scheme the proposed formulation is found to be efficient and very accurate as compared with the results available in the literature. In particular, the simulation results demonstrate an attractive feature of the present formulation compared with the vorticity-velocity approach, namely that the divergence-free condition of the velocity field can always be achieved on a non-staggered mesh.

    Notes: Propellant nitroesters (diethyleneglycol dinitrate and nitroglycerin) and stabilizer (Akardite II, N-methyl-N,N′-diphenylurea) were determined in combustible cartridge case (CCC) wall specimens from 120 mm M829 rounds which had been exposed to elevated temperatures in environmental chambers or which were returned from deployment in Southwest Asia. The results suggest that the migration of these components from the propellant is uniform about the circumference of the adhesive joint between the CCC body and adapter but not longitudinally above and below the joint. The accumulation appears to be linear with time of exposure, with both nitroesters migrating at approximately the same rate with similar energies of activation. The conventional sampling and analysis method is compared with a new micro-sampling and analytical method which reduces solvent waste and extraction time, and considerably reduces damage to the rounds from removal of the analytical specimen.
