Notes: Combinations of the Ritz-Galerkin and finite element methods are applied to solving singularity problems of homogeneous, elliptic equations. The Ritz-Galerkin method is used in the subdomains where there exist singular points; and the finite element method is still used in the rest of the solution domains. More general coupling techniques than those of Reference 6 along the common boundary of subdomains are discussed. Numerical experiments using these kinds of coupling techniques are provided for the first time. It is interesting that the calculated results of Motz's problem have shown the simplified hybrid strategy in Reference 6 to be optimal for both error bounds and stability of numerical solutions, among all general coupling techniques.

    Notes: A study was made of the amperometric titration of the reaction between barium peroxide and copper(I) and copper(II) oxides. It was shown that it was possible to titrate a solid with a solid in surfactant suspensions. The studies were made in aqueous and acetonitrile suspensions containing cationic surfactants. End points were obtained at molecular ratios of BaO2 to CuO of 1 : 1, 1 : 3, and 1 : 5; and molecular ratios of BaO2 to Cu2O of 1 : 1 and 2: 1. It was postulated that the reactions involving CuO were \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \begin{array}{*{20}c} {{\rm BaO}_{\rm 2} + {\rm CuO} \to {\rm BaCuO}_{\rm 3}} \\ {{\rm BaO}_{\rm 2} + {\rm 3CuO} \to {\rm Cu}_{\rm 3} {\rm O}_{\rm 4} + {\rm BaO or BaCu}_{\rm 3} {\rm O}_{\rm 5}} \\ {{\rm BaO}_{\rm 2} + 5{\rm CuO} \to {\rm BaCu}_{\rm 5} {\rm O}_{\rm 7} {\rm or BaO} + {\rm Cu}_{\rm 5} {\rm O}_{\rm 6}} \\ \end{array} $$\end{document} The reactions involving Cu2O were postulated to be \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \begin{array}{*{20}c} {{\rm BaO}_{\rm 2} + {\rm Cu}_{\rm 2} {\rm O} \to {\rm BaCu}_{\rm 2} {\rm O}_{\rm 3}} \\ {{\rm 2BaO}_{\rm 2} + {\rm Cu}_{\rm 2} {\rm O} \to {\rm Ba}_{\rm 2} {\rm Cu}_{\rm 2} {\rm O}_{\rm 5}} \\ \end{array} $$\end{document}.

Notes: Overall comparisons are made for six efficient combinations of the Ritz-Galerkin and finite element methods for solving elliptic boundary value problems with singularities or interfaces. The comparisons are done by using theoretical analysis and numerical experiments. Significant relations among the six combinations are also found. A survey of the six combinations and their coupling strategies are given. These combinations are important not only for matching the Ritz-Galerkin method and the finite element method but also for matching other numerical methods such as the Ritz-Galerkin method and the finite difference method.

Notes: A study was conducted to evaluate mica-poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) composites. A highly filled PVC pipe formulation was selected as reference and a gradual replacement by mica of the calcium carbonate was conducted. The mica improved the fluxing time of the formulation by a factor of three without markedly affecting the equilibrium or maximum, torque. The results are optimized when there is a partial replacement of the calcium carbonate by mica, Orientation of the mica flakes enhances the young's modulus as well as the yield stress. A theoretical analysis shows a discrepancy from experimental results for high levels of mica. The rheological properties were studied with a Brabender plastograph and mechanical properties with a model TM-SM Instron.
