Notizen: Expressions for the diffracted intensities from an aggregate of cylindrically curved crystallites with disordered lattices have been worked out. The treatment is very much similar to that of Mitra & Bhattacherjee [Acta Cryst. (1971), A27, 22-28]. The lattice disorders considered consist of layer shift and variability of interlayer spacings. Results of numerical computations have been discussed and compared with those of cylindrical crystallites without faults.

Notizen: A general expression for the diffracted intensities from an aggregate of cylindrically curved crystallites with rotational shifts of layers by different amounts has been worked out using a model and treatments similar to those of previous work [Ray, De & Bhattacherjee (1978). Acta Cryst. A34, 637-638]. Numerical computations for several cases of layer shift showed that the heights of the diffraction peaks decrease accompanying slight changes in peak positions as the unit of angular shift decreases.

Notizen: An attempt has been made to use the general expression derived by Mitra for the intensity of X-rays diffracted by a cluster of two-dimensional identical curved crystallites in studying the changes expected in the diffraction pattern when the curvature of the crystallite is changed. For this purpose, the previous expression has been modified into a form suitable for numerical computation. The modified expression for the intensity is expressed as a finite series of terms containing Bessel functions of zero order only. Further simplification is arrived at for the case of a cluster of crystallites consisting of single arcs only. On the basis of the expression derived, the intensity diffracted at different angles by a cluster of curved crystallites consisting of single arcs of different curvatures has been computed numerically. For studying the effect of different curvatures, calculations have been carried out for arcs subtending 0, 10, 20, 30, 60 and 90° respectively at the centre of curvature for two different values of the total number of atoms on an arc. Where the total number of atoms on each arc is 20, there is no appreciable variation with curvature of the displacements of the maxima from the Bragg angle. Intensity maxima and line profiles remain practically identical for all values of curvature for this value of the total number of atoms. However, when the total number of atoms on each arc is 4, the shifts in the positions of the maxima and the broadening of the line profile become more pronounced and the peak shifts increase, though by a small amount, as the curvature increases.

Notizen: A general expression for the intensity of X-rays diffracted by a conglomeration of identical cylindrical crystallites with a given angular opening and with axes oriented randomly with respect to the incident beam has been worked out. This expression leads directly to the expressions derived by Mitra for one- and two-dimensional curved crystallites. For cylindrical shells the peaks are highly asymmetrical. They become sharper and shift towards the higher-angle side as the shell axes become more tilted with respect to the normal to the plane containing the incident and the equatorially diffracted beams. The overall nature of the diffraction pattern remains the same. The effect of increasing the number of scattering centres on each arc is found to be only to increase the peak heights and their sharpnesses. The effect of radial thickness is to cause a peak shift and to give rise to additional peaks. The peak heights are increased and become sharper as the radial thickness increases. The effect of curvature is an increase in the number of peaks, an increase in the general background level of scattering and a decrease in the peak heights.

Notizen: A general expression for the diffracted intensities from an aggregate of partially disordered layer structures consisting of plane lattice layers displaced randomly along a and b by arbitrary fractions a/qa and b/qb has been worked out. The approach is similar to that of Wilson [X-ray Optics (1962). London: Methuen] and has been followed by Ray, De & Bhattacherjee [Clay Miner. (1980), 15, 393]. The expression is very general in nature and is suitable for studying the variation of intensities from such crystallites with any amount of displacements. Numerical computations for several cases have been carried out and results discussed. It is concluded that the peak will broaden and background increase as the magnitudes and probabilities of disorder increase.
