    Notes: Far infrared spectra of poly(vinylidene fluoride) and several copolymers (with hexafluoropropylene, chlorotrifluoroethylene, and tetrafluoroethylene) have been obtained between 15 and 55 cm-1. After correction of the interference phenomenon affecting the measurements, the absorption coefficient and the imaginary part of the dielectric constant have been calculated. We show how these parameters are affected by the chain conformation and copolymer composition. The behavior of the crystalline and amorphous phases have been studied. The effects of mechanical and electrical stresses are considered.

    Notes: Absorption spectra, and hence the dielectric properties, of poly(vinylidene fluoride-tri-fluoroethylene) copolymers have been obtained by far infrared spectroscopy in the frequency range 15-55 cm-1. We have studied the evolutions of the absorption coefficient and imaginary part of the dielectric constant as a function of poling field and copolymer composition. During the phase transition from form II to form I, the whole absorption presents a strong increase. This behavior is explained by polarizability changes at phase transition.

    Notes: The thermal and dielectric behaviors of poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) copolymers near the ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition are investigated for samples with 20, 25, 30, and 40 mol% trifluoroethylene (TrFE). The data suggest that the transition becomes continuous for a particular composition near 50 mol% TrFE. Experimental data are sensitive to thermal history (kinetics of crystallization, and kinetics and cycling over the structural transition). It is found that several anomalies are present at the structural change, and in particular the 30 mol% TrFE sample shows the most marked anomalies. These phenomena can be attributed to defects, but another possibility would be the existence of an intemediate supplementary phase. Both hypotheses are discussed.

    Notes: Thermally stimulated depolarization (TSD) measurements with superimposed “piezoelectric noise” allow us to identify the ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition in vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (VDF/TrFE) copolymers with different molar ratios. In addition, a new transition which did not change the ferroelectric features of the material has also been detected. Long relaxation processes always accompany these transitions. By the initial-rise method we calculated the activation energies for these relaxations as 0.73 eV for the ferroelectric-to-paraelectric transition and 0.33 eV for the ferroelectric-to-ferroelectric one.

    Notes: Surgical implants need to be free from contaminants before implantation. The effectiveness of a presently used Clemson bioengineering cleaning (CBC) protocol was evaluated for cleaning three different biomaterials (titanium, aluminum oxide, and polyethylene terephthalate, PET) contaminated with three different contaminants (calcium chloride, zinc chloride, and hexadecane). Radiolabeled tracer analysis (RTA), with the use of liquid scintillation, was used as the surface analytical technique to quantitatively determine the removed from the biomaterial surface. On average, the ultrasonic cleaning step removed 99.96% of all three contaminants from both titanium and aluminum oxide. The CBC protocol did not sufficiently clean PET fabric contaminated with hexadecane leaving 11.76% of the contaminant after the ultrasonic step. With the use of isopropyl alcohol in series with 1% Liquinox, the ultrasonic step cleaned the fabric soiled with hexadecane within 30 min, removing 99.85% of the hexadecane initially on the surface. RTA proved to be an excellent method of quantifying surface contamination on implant materials, and for assessing the effectiveness of cleaning protocols in question. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The effects of gamma irradiation in four types of irradiation environment on the thermal and tensile properties of gel-spun, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene fibers (Spectra™ 1000) have been investigated. The gamma irradiation was conducted at 2.5 Mrad and in air, nitrogen, acetylene, and vacuum to study the effects of irradiation media on the aforementioned properties. Thermal and tensile properties of virgin and irradiated fiber samples were examined using differential scanning calorimetry and an Instron tensile tester, respectively. The results indicate that both gamma irradiation and irradiation environment affected the properties of the polyethylene fibers, and substantial changes were observed for the oxygen-containing environment. The tensile-fractured surfaces of the fibers were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The properties of irradiated fibers were further evaluated at 160 days postirradiation and found to be affected, substantially. The postirradiation aging significantly decreased the tensile strength and elongation of the irradiated fibers, indicating that polyethylene fibers should not be exposed to gamma irradiation. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A research program was initiated with both experimental and computational chemistry based molecular modeling components to investigate specific amino acid-surface interactions. The experimental portion of this study, with details reported elsewhere, investigated the adsorption of selected molecular weights of poly(L-lysine) onto silica glass microspheres with the adsorption enthalpy per adsorbed mer determined to be -0.23 ± 0.13 kcal/mol (mean ± 95% confidence interval). Molecular modeling of this system was then conducted using two approaches: an AM1 semiempirical molecular orbital method to predict L-lysine/glass interaction energy and an MM2 molecular mechanics method to investigate the structural configuration for poly(L-lysine). The modeling predicted a minimum energy configuration of a rotational backbone structure for poly(L-lysine) with approximately one full rotation occurring about every 8 mers, and that the amine side chains of the L-lysine will hydrogen bond with the silica surface with an average adsorption energy of approximately -0.34 kcal/mol/mer. The molecular modeling results are in good agreement with the experimentally measured value and provide insights into possible molecular-level behavior which would be very difficult to determine by experimental analyses alone. This work demonstrates the use of molecular modeling in conjunction with experimental studies to investigate complex molecular interactions. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: The short- and long-term creep behaviors of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) systems (compression-molded UHMWPE sheets and self-reinforced UHMWPE composites) have been investigated. The short-term (30-120 min) creep experiment was conducted at a load of 1 MPa and a temperature range of 37-62°C. Based on short-term creep data, the long-term creep behavior of UHMWPE systems at 1 MPa and 37°C was predicted using time-temperature superposition and analytical formulas. Compared to actual long-term creep experiments of up to 110 days, the predicted creep values were found to well describe the creep properties of the materials. The creep behaviors of the UHMWPE systems were then evaluated for a creep time of longer than 10 years, and it was found that most creep deformation occurs in the early periods. The shift factors associated with time-temperature superposition were found to increase with increasing temperature, as per the Arrhenius equation. The effects of temperature, materials, and load on the shift factors could be explained by the classical free volume theory. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res, 40, 214-223, 1998
