Description / Table of Contents:
W. KUHN and coworkers recently presented a new method for the investigation of network density in crosslinked swollen materials. The method is based on a thermal analysis of benzene swollen samples. Examinations have been made on filled and unfilled natural rubber vulcanizates. The results of the measurements on unfilled vulcanizates show the expected correlation between equilibrium swelling and modulus. In the presence of filler the network is obviously inhomogenous i.e. areas of higher and lower crosslinking density do exist. Therefore in filled vulcanizates the swelling ratio alone is a mean value which is not sufficient to give informations about the real network distribution.
Notes:
