The resonance Raman spectra of 13C- and 2H-substituted carotenoids were observed from photosynthetic bacteria cultured in 13C-and 2H-substituted media, respectively. The observed Raman bands of 13C- and 2H-substituted carotenoids could be reasonably assigned on the basis of the normal coordinate analysis of a model molecule. This gave substantial support to the previous assignments of the Raman and infrared bands of β-carotene.
