    Notes: The finite element reduced scalar potential method of calculating magnetic fields is investigated by comparing it with a classical series method. Both methods are applied to two problems having a current band surrounding a ferromagnetic shell. The magnetic field distributions obtained by both methods are shown to be in generally good agreement.

    Notes: A numerical solution algorithm employing the finite element concept of solid mechanics is derived for the transient laminar two-dimensional flow of an incompressible viscous fluid. Through dependent variable transformation, the problem is uniformly recast into the solution of a quasi-linear elliptic boundary value-problem, for which the finite element solution theory is established. The algorithm is uniquely user-oriented in accepting the generalized elliptic boundary condition specification of any non-coordinate-surface solution do main closure segment and on employing an arbitrarily irregular computational latticc. Numerical results are presented for several problems in internal flow illustrating solution accuracy, convergence, versatility and the ability to predict imbedded regions of recirculating flow.

    Notes: Previous studies by Stephens and McNulty and Strecker and Stephens have demonstrated that foil barriers placed between the mesonephros and lateral plate at stages 12 to 15 inhibited limb development, but foil barriers placed between the neural tube and somites at stages 11 to 12 resulted in limbs with normal skeletal patterns. It was concluded that some influence present in the paraxial region of the embryo at stages 11 to 15 is necessary for normal limb development. The present study was undertaken to localize that influence more precisely. Foil barriers were placed in the lateral edge of the somites or segmental plate of stage 10 to 15 chick embryos. Barriers placed into stage 13 to 15 embryos resulted in chicks with normal limbs, but barriers placed into stage 10 to 11 embryos resulted in chicks with defective limbs. Barriers inserted just lateral to Hensen's node at stages 6 to 8 resulted in embryos with defective or absent wings. We also grafted stage 4 to 9 presumptive limb territories with and without Hensen's node. Explants without Hensen's node formed limb-like structures in 1% of the cases. Explants with Hensen's node formed limb-like structures in 27% of the cases. When barriers were implanted and a node was placed on the lateral side of the barrier, limbs formed in 40% of the cases. These data suggest a medial to lateral progression of some as yet unknown morphogenetic influence necessary for normal limb development and we hypothesized that the influence may initially emanate from Hensen's node.

    Notes: The labial palpus of the elephant louse Haematomyzus elephantis has six sensilla that represent three different types: trichoid, basiconic, and styloconic. Two rows of basiconic sensilla are situated on the dorsal and ventral surfaces of the rostrum, and each row consists of three sensilla. Male and female antennae have 15-17 trichoid sensilla situated on the scape, pedicel, and three antennal annuli. Both sexes have two sensilla basiconica on the dorsal surface of the pedicel near the junction of the scape and pedicel. Two coeloconic (tuft) sensilla are situated on the antennae of both sexes, one sensillum on each of the last two annuli. There are three plate organs, two on the last annulus and one on the penultimate annulus of the male and female antennae. Sexual dimorphism is exhibited in the male and female antennae, in that the male has about twice as many sensilla basiconica on the apex of the last annulus as does the female. The total number of sensilla basiconica on the apex of the male antennae is at least two times the number that is known to be present in any other species of lice. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Five types of sensilla are situated on the apical area of the labial and maxillary palpi and galea of Cicidela sexguttata. Large, conical, and peg-like sensilla are in rows on the central region of each palpus. These sensilla have a hollow cuticular peg, with an apical pore and multi-innervation. This central region of palpal sensilla is surrounded by campaniform sensilla that are disc-shaped and small conical peg sensilla. A similar type of conical sensillum as the found in the palpal central region is situated around the periphery of the palpal apex and apex of the galea. This conical peg sensillum is located in a shallow depression and is structurally similar to the other peg sensilla, but it has a mechanoreceptor neuron attached to the cuticular base of the sensillum. A long, single, trichoid sensillum is situated in the center of the galea and is hollow, thick-walled, porous, and multi-innervated. The apices of the palpi and galea have a large number of dermal gland openings that actively secrete a substance during the feeding process of the tiger beetle. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Comparisons have been made of the weights of the suprarenals of 525 mature female dogs in dioestrus, oestrus, pregnancy and lactation. Tables and graphs show that there was a slight increase in the size of the suprarenals during oestrus. There was hypertrophy of both the cortex and the medulla in the oestrous dogs. Only slight increase was shown in the weights of the glands of pregnant animals when the net body weight was considered and no increase when the total body weight was used in the study. There was no hypertrophy of the glands of lactating animals.There was only a slight variation in the seasonal occurrence of oestrus. From 34 to 37% of the total numbers of mature females examined in the seasons were found to be in oestrus. From 13 to 16% of the total numbers were found to be pregnant.

    Notes: The molluscan genus Indoplanorbis is shown to differ markedly from all other members of the family Planorbidae in the generative complex, the vas deferens being encased in a long, flexible tube in which it is freely movable. The preputium of the male complex is shown to be completely evertible from the male opening and to act as a male copulatory organ. The presence of a single, heavy penial retractor innervated by an equally strong nerve is indicated. Comparisons are made with the genitalia of the European Coretus and the American Helisoma showing fundamental differences in the generative apparatus of the three groups. Indoplanorbis is most closely related to Coretus, the vas deferens of that group being also encased in a tube. Helisoma differs from both of these genera, the vas deferens not being encased in a tube and is of the same diameter throughout its length.

    Notes: A generalized curvilinear co-ordinate Taylor weak statement implicit finite element algorithm is developed for the two-dimensional and axisymmetric compressible Navier-Stokes equations for ideal and reacting gases. For accurate hypersonic simulation, air is modelled as a mixture of five perfect gases, i.e. molecular and atomic oxygen and nirogen as well as nitric oxide. The associated pressure is then determined via Newton solution of the classical chemical equilibrium equation system. The directional semi-discretization is achieved using an optimal metric data Galerkin finite element weak statement, on a developed ‘companion conservation law system’, permitting classical test and trial space definitions. Utilizing an implicit Runge-Kutta scheme, the terminal algorithm is then non-linearly stable, and second-order accurate in space and time on arbitrary curvilinear co-ordinates. Subsequently, a matrix tensor product factorization procedure permits an efficient numerical linear algebra handling for large Courant numbers. For ideal- and real-gas hypersonic flows, the algorithm generates essentially non-oscillatory numerical solutions in the presence of strong detached shocks and boundary layer inviscid flow interactions.

    Notes: This paper considers accelerated bisection methods for calculating the eigenvalues of symmetric tridiagonal and quindiagonal matrices using cubic polynomial interpolation, as well as first and second order Newton iteration. Recursive relations based on the Sturm sequences are presented for the Newton type methods. The relations use a convenient scaling which retains the relative magnitudes in the iterative schemes but which avoids numerical overflow. Numerical examples show a significant increase in convergence rate.

    Notes: The amino-terminal sequences of several imported mitochondrial precursor proteins have been shown to contain all the information required for transport to and sorting within mitochondria. Proteins transported into the matrix contain a matrix-targeting sequence. Proteins destined for other submitochondrial compartments contain, in addition, an intramitochondrial sorting sequence. The sorting sequence in the cytochrome c1 presequence is a stop-transport sequence for the inner mitochondrial membrane. Proteins containing cleavable presequences can reach the intermembrane space by either of two pathways: (1) Part of the presequence is transported into the matrix; the attached protein, however, is transported across the outer but not the inner membrane (eg, the cytochrome c1 presequence). (2) The precursor is first transported into the matrix; part of the presequence is then removed, and the protein is reexported across the inner membrane (eg, the precursor of the iron-sulphur protein of the cytochrome bc1 complex).Matrix-targeting sequences lack primary amino acid sequence homology, but they share structural characteristics. Many DNA sequences in a genome can potentially encode a matrix-targeting sequence. These sequences become active if positioned upstream of a protein coding sequence. Artificial matrix-targeting sequences include synthetic presequences consisting of only a few different amino acids, a known amphiphilic helix found inside a cytosolic protein, and the presequence of an imported chloroplast protein.Transport of proteins across mitochrondrial membranes requires a membranes requires a membrane potential, ATP, and a 45-kd protein of the mitochondrial outer membrane. The ATP requirement for import is correlated with a stable structure in the imported precursor molecule. We suggest that transmembrane transport of a stably folded precursor requires an ATP-dependent unfolding of the precursor protein.
