Notizen: Thermal and mechanical studies on many linear polyesters have revealed their behavior in crystalline, liquid crystalline, and amorphous phases. Their phase behavior in binary compositions has also been studied by a range of additional techniques and in combinations including the polycarbonate of bisphenol-A. Regions of amorphous compatibility and incompatibility have been identified and measures made of transition temperature changes with composition. The conditions for transreaction have also been determined and the properties measured for the resultant new copolymers.

Notizen: Animal cell bioreactors are often limited by the oxygen supply. The reduction in oxygen consumption per cell that occurs under hypoxic conditions may be exploited as a method for increasing reactor capacity if additional glucose is provided to offset increased glycolytic activity. The effects of oxygen deprivation on recombinant tPA (tissue-type plasminogen activator) production were investigated using midexponential and slowly growing CHO cells. The specific oxygen consumption rate can be reduced by at least 50% (mild hypoxic conditions) without affecting the cell growth rate, maximum cell concentration, tPA production rate, or tPA quality (as characterized by the tPA-specific activity and SDS-PAGE analysis). This suggests that mild-hypoxic conditions (with sufficient glucose) can be used to double the cell concentration and volumetric tPA production rate (at a constant volumetric oxygen supply rate) without sacrificing product quality. However, anoxic conditions should be avoided. When slowly growing cultures were exposed to anoxia, the tPA production rate decreased by 80% without affecting tPA quality. However, when midexponential cultures were exposed to anoxia, the drop in tPA production was accompanied by a decrease in tPA quality that ranged from a 40% decrease in tPA specific activity to extensive tPA degradation. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: The influence of osmotic pressure and solute adsorption on permeate flux during ultrafiltration of a solute that forms a gel-like layer on membrane surfaces was investigated. Ovalbumin solutions were ultrafiltrated using three different kinds of membranes, polyolefine, polysullfone, and polyacrylonitrile. Flux data were analyzed by three conventional models: gel polarization, osmotic pressure, and resistance in series. The experimental data were in conflict with all conventional models. Data analysis suggested that the main factors which influence permeate flux decline were osmotic pressure increase at the membrane surface and resistance caused by solute adsorption.A new model, which takes into account both osmotic pressure and resistance due to solute adsorption, is proposed. Permeate flux declines observed in the experiments fit this model quite precisely. The gel layer that forms on the membrane surface has little influence on permeate flux and can be neglected.

Notizen: The Kinetics of the SO2-Na2CO3 reaction were studied at 353 to 413 K and atmospheric pressure with thermal gravimetric analysis data. Since the reaction is very fast, special precautions were taken to operate at conditions such that transport effects did not influence results. The data indicated that Na2SO3 was formed by two paths: direct reaction, and adsorption of SO2 followed by conversion of adsorbed SO2 to adsorbed CO2 and finally desorption to final product. Rate constants were evaluated for each step in the proposed mechanism. Product distribution predicted from the rate constants agreed well with the distribution calculated from the experimental data at temperatures from 353 to 413 K. At 413 K the results suggested a change in mechanism.

Notizen: From time to time, A.I.Ch.E. Journal presents translations of certain technical articles written by our Japanese colleagues in their own language. These translations are made by Kenzi Etani, who received his B.S. in chemical engineering in 1953 at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and his M.S. in 1955 at M.I.T. He is associated with Stone & Webster and is an associate member of American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He is also a member of the Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan, and the Japan Oil Chemists' Society. His offer to help break down the language barrier is acknowledged.Abstracts, notation, literature cited, tables, and figure captions not published here appear in English in the original paper. No figure will be reproduced in these translations. The following article was published in Chemical Engineering (Japan), 21, pages 17-25 (1957).

Notizen: Reverse osmosis experimental data for some inorganic salts with the porous cellulose acetate membrane used were analyzed to obtain their diffusivity in the membrane. A parameter including the diffusivity was found constant for each film in the concentration range investigated for a particular solute at a particular pressure. This parameter was also independent of feed flow rate. The effect of operating pressure on the parameter was found to depend on the film shrinkage. Mass transfer coefficient between the membrane and the feed solution was also obtained by the analysis, and this value was independently checked by the diffusion current method. Coincidence of these coefficients shows that the ordinary mass transfer coefficient can be used in reverse osmosis with the appropriate driving force. These facts facilitate the prediction of solute separation and membrane throughput rate in reverse osmosis.

Notizen: Characteristics of the gel layer were investigated by direct measurement of its concentration treating polyvinylalcohol and ovalbumin aqueous solutions, using cellulose acetate tubular ultrafiltration membranes. The concentration of the gel layer was not constant but a function of bulk concentration and feed velocity. The mass transfer coefficient obtained agreed with Deissler correlation. There was a definite correlation between the resistance of the gel layer and its concentration.
