Notes: Results are presented for the solid-catalyzed hydrogenation of ethylene in fixed and fluidized beds. The effect of gas velocity, bed height, catalyst activity, particle size, and internal baffles on fluidized reactor efficiency are given, and Equations derived from a simplified mathematical model correlate the data.

Description / Table of Contents: The use of elektrolytic tinplateIn the introduction the enormous change of the manufacturing process of tinplate is dicussed which resulted in the introduction of the cold reduction process for the steel  -  changing from the steel sheet to the continuous steel strip  -  and in the electroplating of tin. There is a very different behaviour in service through the decreasing of the tin coating weight which is now less than a third of that of a hot-dip tinplate. The structure of the different surface layers of tinplate and their properties are discussed. There are considerale differences in solderability, in the tension for rusting of the exterior of tin cans and also in the corrodibility in the interior of such cans. Differences in the surface quality of the steel strip are of special importance. To avoid such defects the electrolytic tinplate is proteted in most cases by lacquer coatings. Other possibilities are the use of combinations of hot-dip and electrolytic tinplate resp. the use of „differential“ electrolytic tinplate.

Notes: A novel approach to the immunological stage of immunoblotting is described. The method employs the phenomenon of electroendosmosis to bring the antibodies sequentially into contact with the antigen. Using a three-stage peroxidase antiperoxidase system for human group specific protein (Gc) phenotyping, it has been shown that the method has comparable sensitivity, is more rapid and is more economical of antibodies than a similar multi-stage immerse-and-wash system.

Notes: The Savannah River Laboratory is using robots to improve safety and reduce personnel radiation exposure in the nuclear process environment. This paper reviews several successful applications at this site. A detailed discussion is presented on an application to transfer materials in a line of shielded radiation work cells.

Notes: A new approach is described to immunoblotting in which antigens after isoelectric focusing are captured on nitrocellulose membranes coated with a specific antibody. The method has been applied to the analysis of human IgA ϰ and λ from whole blood and serum without prior purification. The visualized bands were quantified by laser densitometry in four pI ranges. It is concluded that, under the conditions used, close to 100% of serum IgA is captured. The method has a coefficient of variation of 4.5-12.8%, mean 8.0%.

Notes: Chemical cues enable female parasitic wasps to locate the eggs, larvae, or other life stages of the insects in or on which they place their eggs. These chemical signals, or semiochemicals, may be produced by the hosts and/or by the plants on which the hosts feed. The composition of the chemical signal often differs with different species of hosts or with different plants. New evidence suggests that the wasps exploit semiochemicals emitted by plants in response to insect herbivore feeding. The wasps learn to respond to the different blends of chemicals that indicate the location of their hosts and they can be trained to respond to a specific odor blend. Thus, it may be possible to increase their effectiveness for biological control by conditioning them, prior to their release, to search for a target pest in a particular crop. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
