Description: Abstract The key to miniaturization of piezoelectric devices is to build high‐performance fine‐grained piezoceramics. Although the preparation of fine‐grained ceramics can be achieved by hot press sintering or spark plasma sintering, complex processes, and high costs hinder the popularization of such technologies. In this work, a one‐step conventional pressureless sintering technique based on partially amorphized nano‐precursors has been proposed for low‐cost preparation of submicron‐structured ceramics. Using this technology, 0.36BiScO3–0.64PbTiO3 ceramics with an average particle size of 170 nm and a relative density of 95% can be prepared at temperature as low as 900°C, while the samples still have excellent piezoelectric properties (d33 = 220 pC/N, g33 = 40 × 10−3 Vm/N). In the process of sintering partially amorphized nano‐precursors, the initial densification rate is faster than the grain growth rate, which can be attributed to two effects promoting low temperature densification, one is the liquid phase sintering mechanism associated with the amorphous phase, and the other is the filling effect of small particles deposited at the grain boundaries. This work is simple and easy to implement, and it is expected to be extended to the preparation of other types of fine‐grained ceramics.

Description: Titania-doped chromium oxide (CTO) can serve as an active gas-sensing material. It has been successful in commercial gas sensors due to its good gas-sensing performance and stability in humid environment; especially with respect of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). CTO fibers with reticular structure were prepared by electrospinning technology and the sensing behavior upon exposure to ethanol was characterized in this report. The gas sensors made of CTO fibers show a good response to ethanol and stability for a long term at operating temperature of 400°C. The experimental results have been analyzed and simulated using the response equations. The humidity effects on the sensor performance were also evaluated. The results indicate that the CTO fibers could be used in practical applications.

Description: The ATPsyn-b encoding for subunit b of ATP synthase in Drosophila melanogaster is proposed to act in ATP synthesis and phagocytosis, and has been identified as one of the sperm proteins in both Drosophila and mammals. At present, its details of functions in animal growth and spermatogenesis have not been reported. In this study, we knocked down ATPsyn-b using Drosophila lines expressing inducible hairpin RNAi constructs and Gal4 drivers. Ubiquitous knockdown of ATPsyn-b resulted in growth defects in larval stage as the larvae did not grow bigger than the size of normal second-instar larvae. Knockdown in testes did not interrupt the developmental excursion to viable adult flies, however, these male adults were sterile. Analyses of testes revealed disrupted nuclear bundles during spermatogenesis and abnormal shaping in spermatid elongation. There were no mature sperm in the seminal vesicle of ATPsyn-b knockdown male testes. These findings suggest us that ATPsyn-b acts in growth and male fertility of Drosophila.

Description: Abstract Multiregion input–output (MRIO) models have become increasingly important in economic and environmental analysis. However, the current resolution of most MRIO models fails to capture the heterogeneity between subregions, especially in cities. The lack of city‐level MRIO tables has impeded the accomplishment of city‐level studies and hampered the understanding of the relationship between urban growth and consumption, and teleconnections to other regions. In this paper, we propose a partial survey‐based multiple‐layer framework for MRIO table compilation of a Chinese province that distinguishes city‐based regions. This framework can effectively address a large number of data processes and retain consistency between layers. Using the framework, we first compile a nested Hebei‐China city‐level MRIO table and then apply city‐level energy footprint accounting of the North China urban agglomeration. Our results present the critical role of Hebei cities in energy supply in 2012 and quantify energy use embodied in goods for the domestic trade. Tangshan, Shijiazhuang, and Handan are distinctive cities in the energy supply chain of other regions, for both less developed and developed regions. This multiple‐layer framework represents a feasible approach for developing subregional‐level MRIO models and offers the possibility to analyze global trade at the subregional level with limited data. The data and results from the analysis in this article are available for download from China Emission Accounts and Datasets.

Description: Abstract To build piezoceramics with high transduction coefficient (d33 × g33) is the key to improve the power generation capability of piezoelectric energy harvester. Here, a new targeted doping strategy has been proposed to significantly increase the energy density of piezoceramics. Taking the modification of 0.2Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3‐0.8Pb(Zr0.5Ti0.5)O3 (PZN‐PZT) as an example, dual functions can be achieved by introducing appropriate amount of target‐doped (Zn0.1Ni0.9)TiO3 (ZTN9) based on its pyrolysis characteristics. On the one hand, Ni2+ ions enter the perovskite matrix to replace Zn2+ ions to form equivalent doping; on the other hand, it induces the formation of 0‐3 ZnO/perovskite composite structure, and both of which promote the large increase in d33 × g33 due to the changes in the domain configuration are more conducive to the ferro‐/piezoelectricity. In all compositions, 0.67 mol% ZTN9 added specimen has a maximum value (12 433 × 10−15 m2/N) of the d33 × g33. The cantilever piezoelectric energy harvester fabricated with this material generates up to 4.50 μW/mm3 of power density at 1 g acceleration, which is capable of quickly charging a 47 μF electrolytic capacitor and then lit 135 parallel‐connected commercial blue light‐emitting diodes (LEDs), showing its important application in implementing self‐powered microsensors.

Description: Many parts of the world have experienced frequent and severe droughts during the last few decades. Most previous studies examined the effects of specific drought events on vegetation productivity. In this study, we characterized the drought events in China from 1982 to 2012 and assessed their effects on vegetation productivity inferred from satellite data. We first assessed the occurrence, spatial extent, frequency, and severity of drought using the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI). We then examined the impacts of droughts on China's terrestrial ecosystems using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). During the period 1982–2012, China's land area (%) experiencing drought showed an insignificant trend. However, the drought conditions had been more severe over most regions in northern parts of China since the end of the 1990s, indicating that droughts hit these regions more frequently due to the drier climate. The severe droughts substantially reduced annual and seasonal NDVI. The magnitude and direction of the detrended NDVI under drought stress varied with season and vegetation type. The inconsistency between the regional means of PDSI and detrended NDVI could be attributed to different responses of vegetation to drought and the timing, duration, severity, and lag effects of droughts. The negative effects of droughts on vegetation productivity were partly offset by the enhancement of plant growth resulting from factors such as lower cloudiness, warming climate, and human activities (e.g., afforestation, improved agricultural management practices).

Description: ABSTRACT The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway is dysregulated in more than 50% of all human malignancies and is a major target in cancer treatment. In this study, we explored the underlying mechanism involving microRNA-145-3p (miR-145-3p) in the development and progression of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) by targeting PDK1 via the mTOR signaling pathway. NSCLC tissues and adjacent normal tissues were obtained from 83 NSCLC patients. miR-145-3p, PDK1 and mTOR levels were determined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry. Human NSCLC cell lines A549 and H1299 were transfected with miR-145-3p and siPDK1 to confirm the effect of miR-145-3p and PDK1 on NSCLC cells in vitro. Cell growth was evaluated by a CCK8 assay. Cell motility and chemotaxis analysis were determined by the scratch test and chemotaxis assay respectively. The protein levels of PDK1 and mTOR were measured using the western blotting. Results showed lower level of miR-145-3p and higher levels of PDK1 and mTOR in NSCLC tissues compared to the adjacent normal tissues. In vitro results showed that cell growth, cell motility and chemotaxis were all inhibited in cells transfected with miR-145-3p and those transfected with siPDK. Additionally, dual luciferase reporter gene assay helped confirmed that PDK1 is a target of miR-145. Finally, levels of PDK1, mTOR and phosphorylated-mTOR were lower in cells transfected with miR-145-3p as well as those with siPDK1. These findings indicate that miR-145-3p may inhibit cell growth, motility and chemotaxis in NSCLC by targeting PDK1 through suppressing the mTOR pathway. This article is protected by copyright.
