Notes: The zinc hydroxide complexes Tp*Zn-OH with TpCum,Me = tris(3-cumenyl-5-methylpyrazolyl)borate and TptBu,Me = tris(3-tert-butyl-5-methylpyrazolyl)borate can be converted to the alkyl carbonate complexes Tp*Zn-OCOOR by reaction with dialkyl dicarbonates or with alcohol and CO2. An alternative formation reaction is the treatment of the pyrazolyl borate with zinc perchlorate and potassium carbonate in alcohol. The interconversion between TpCum,MeZn-OH and TpCum,MeZn-OCOOMe in methanol-containing solution can be repeatedly performed in both directions by bubbling either CO2 or N2 through the solution. The alkyl carbonate complexes show a variable sensitivity towards hydrolytic destruction with reformation of the hydroxide complexes. The complexes TptBu,MeZn-OCOOR (R = Me, Et) release CO2 under high vacuum to form the alkoxide complexes TptBu,Me-Zn-OR, which could not be obtained pure due to their extreme water sensitivity. Indirect evidence for their existence is also obtained by the reaction between TpCum,MeZn-OCOOMe and methyl iodide, forming TpCum,MeZn-I and dimethyl ether. The Zinc hydroxide complexes catalyse the formation of diethyl carbonate from ethanol and CO2.

Notes: The zinc hydroxide complexes Tp*Zn-OH of highly substituted pyrazolylborate ligands react with phenols, and alcohols, of sufficient acidity, in a condensation reaction with release of H2O. Starting with phenols the following were attached:phenolate, p-nitropehnolate, o-vanillinate, o-hydroxymethylphenolate, o,o-bis(hydroxymethyl) -p-methylphenolate. Whilst aliphatic alcohols and benzyl alcohol did not react, their derivatives, with highly electronegative substituents could be incorporated. Thus, the arylmethoxides OCH2C6F5 and OCH2C6H4NO2-p, as well as the alkoxides OCH2CF3 and OCH2CCl3, were attached. 2-Mercaptoethanol was bound via its thiolate function. The crystal structures of TpCum,Me ZN-OC6H4NO2-p,TpCum,Me ZN-OCH2-C6F5, TpCum,Me ZN-OCH2CF3, TpCum,Me ZN-OCH2CCl3 and TpCum,MeZn-SCH2CH2OH were determined.

Notes: The reaction of ethylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, 3,6-dioxaoctane-1,8-diol (triethylene glycol), poly(ethylene oxide)s with M̄n = 300,1000 and 3000, or with poly(propylene oxide)s with M̄n = 425 and 2000 in excess with AIBN leads to the corresponding bis(hydroxyalkyl) 2,2′-azodiisobutyrates (1a-i). These initiators are suited to synthesize telechelics. With equimolar amounts of AIBN and 3-oxapentane-1,5-diol (diethylene glycol), poly(ethylene oxide)s with M̄n = 300, 1000 and 12000, poly(propylene oxide) with M̄n = 425, or with poly(tetrahydrofuran) with M̄n = 1000 and 2000 polymeric azoinitiators of structure 2 are formed. Blockcopolymers may be synthesized by means of these polymeric azocompounds.

Notes: The giant anterior salivary gland cells from the large mammalian blood-sucking, glossiphoniid leech, Haementeria ghilianii, can be subdivided into three morphologically and functionally distinct regions: (1) a soma, responsible for the synthesis and storage of secretory products; (2) a long cell process, responsible for the storage and intracellular transport of the secretory vesicles; and (3) the site of exocytosis at the process terminal. The giant somata are densely packed with secretory vesicles. Deep plasmalemmal invaginations invade the soma and form an extensive system of extracellular lacunae. The rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the Golgi apparatus are organized in the cell periphery, near the highly branched nucleus, and along the lacunae. The somata taper into long processes extending over several centimeters to the proboscis tip. These contain secretory vesicles through their whole length. In the process periphery, the vesicles are completely ensheathed by a concentric subplasmalemmal smooth ER cisterna. This originates deeply within the soma and extends through the whole cell process to its terminal. The ER provides support for up to several hundred longitudinally oriented microtubules. Secretion occurs at the very tip of the cell processes, each of which terminates at the proboscis tip at the base of a cuticular pore.We found synapses close to the sites of exocytosis, providing morphological evidence for neuronal control of secretion.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion inspection on pipelines with shearographyPipelines can be inspected quickly and reliably on inner corrosion by means of laser shearography. During pressure change in the pipe shearography measures all strain concentrations on the surface of the pipe. As corrosion leads to local wall thinnings inside the pipes these areas will expand more than non corroded areas and thus be indicated by shearography from the outside of the pipe. In this paper important features and conditions are described for application of this technique for inspection in power plants. It is reported about experience on practical inspection tasks. Latest developments enable numerical data processing and graphical and coloured data presentation for easier defect recognition.
