Description: Using a lava flow emplacement model and a satellite-based land cover classification, we produce a map to allow assessment of the type and quantity of natural, agricultural and urban land cover at risk from lava flow invasion. The first step is to produce lava effusion rate contours, i.e., lines linking distances down a volcano’s flank that a lava flow will likely extend if fed at a given effusion rate from a predetermined vent zone. This involves first identifying a vent mask and then running a downhill flow path model from the edge of every pixel around the vent mask perimeter to the edge of the DEM. To do this, we run a stochastic model whereby the flow path is projected 1,000 times from every pixel around the vent mask perimeter with random noise being added to the DEM with each run so that a slightly different flow path is generated with each run. The FLOWGO lava flow model is then run down each path, at a series of effusion rates, to determine likely run-out distance for channel-fed flow extending down each path. These results are used to plot effusion rate contours. Finally, effusion rate contours are projected onto a land classification map (produced from an ASTER image of Etna) to assess the type and amount of each land cover class falling within each contour. The resulting maps are designed to provide a quick look-up capability to assess the type of land at risk from lava extending from any location at a range of likely effusion rates. For our first (2,000 m) vent zone case used for Etna, we find a total of area of ~680 km2 is at risk from flows fed at 40 m3 s−1, of which ~6 km2 is urban, ~150 km2 is agriculture and ~270 km2 is grass/woodland. The model can also be run for specific cases, where we find that Etna’s 1669 vent location, if active today, would likely inundate almost 11 km2 of urban land, as well as 15.6 km2 of agricultural land, including 9.5 km2 of olive groves and 5.2 km2 of vineyards and fruit/nut orchards.

Notes: Abstract Fourteen substances were tested as vapour for the ability to modify the wing vibration response of male Ephestia kuehniella to sex pheromone from the female over a period of 30 sec. Eleven substances had little or no effect on behaviour when tested alone, but six of the eleven decreased the response to pheromone, one increased it, and four had no effect. Two substances were tested in a wind tunnel for their effect as background vapour on the number of male E. kuehniella present at a source of female sex pheromone over a period of 18 min. The effects of these substances in the wind tunnel were the inverse of their effects in the experiments on wing vibration, that is, the short-term measurements of wing vibration gave no indication of the influence of these substances on the accumulation of males at a source of female sex pheromone.

Notes: Abstract Filter paper treated with an extract of virgin female Ephestia kuehniella was held in a stream of air, and its characteristics as a source of sex pheromone were inferred from a series of bioassays of the air stream. Air swept upwards through the entire cross section of an olfactometer chamber which held male E. kuehniella and filter paper treated with female extract was placed under the chamber to provide sex pheromone from a defined area on the floor (the target). Time-response curves were plotted for a range of quantities of female extract at the target. Males flew to the target but often left and returned. The number of males on the target at any instant therefore represented a dynamic equilibrium between their rates of arrival and departure.

Notes: Abstract A reasonably fast and reliable chemical method for the determination of glycolic acid in sea water is described in detail. It consists of adsorption of glycolic acid by alumina, followed by extraction with sulphuric acid and then colorimetry. The overall efficiency of recovery of this method, which is standardized internally, is approximately 67%, and about 20-fold concentration of glycolic acid is achieved. Using this method, the occurrence of glycolic acid in Ipswich Bay (Gulf of Maine, USA) was studied over a period of 6 months and was found to fluctuate between 0 and 80 μg/l. The zero values occurred in January, when the phytoplankton chlorophyll values were also at their winter minimum.

Notes: Abstract There is an increasing need to find a suitable means for disposal of coal combustion byproducts because of the increasing world-wide production of these byproducts. This need has prompted interest in the use of land disposal, but there are concerns that this use may degrade the quality of soil. To determine the influence of coal combustion byproducts on the transformation and fate of soil N and assess the potential impact of land disposal on soil quality, we studied the effects of two combustion byproducts (fly ash and bed ash) applied at rates of 22.5, 45, 90, and 180 Mg ha-1 on mineralization and volatile loss of N from soil. Studies comparing the influence of the byproducts on these processes showed that whereas fly ash had little influence on the fate of soil N, bed ash caused substantial mineralization of organic soil N and volatile loss of this N as NH3. Studies monitoring the pH of soils treated with bed ash showed that soil pH increased immediately after this treatment, with values reaching as high as 12.8. These studies indicated that such extreme alkaline conditions caused chemical degradation and volatile loss of as much as 10% of the organic N in soil, and they provide strong evidence that the improper disposal of bed ash on land can have a substantial negative impact on soil quality.

Notes: Abstract Genotypic differences in absorption or utilization of P might be exploited to improve efficiency of fertilizer use or to obtain higher productivity on P-deficient soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate responses by 75 genotypes of upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) to two soil P levels in two field experiments. In the first experiment, soil P levels (Mehlich 1) were 1.5 mg kg−1 and 5 mg kg−1, and in the second experiment, 3 mg kg−1 and 4.7 mg kg−1 of soil, respectively. Rice cultivars differed significantly in shoot dry matter production at flowering, grain yield, and plant P status. Based on a grain yield efficiency index, cultivars were classified as P-efficient or P-inefficient. Shoot dry matter was more sensitive to P-deficiency but was not related to grain yield. Phosphorus use efficiency was higher under the low P treatment. Phosphorus uptake was significantly correlated with dry matter, P concentration and P-efficiency ratio. Results of this study indicate that genetic differences in P-use efficiency exist among upland rice cultivars and may be exploited in breeding programs.

Notes: Abstract Even though K is an essential nutrient, the response of upland rice to K fertilization under field conditions has not been adequately documented. This research was conducted to examine the influence of K fertilization on yield of upland rice (Oryza sativa L.). In the first three years, K was broadcast at rates of 0, 42, 84, 126 and 168 kg K ha−1. In the last two years K was banded at rates of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 kg K ha−1. The experiment was conducted on an Oxisol (Typic Haplustox) during five consecutive years. Potassium significantly increased grain yields and dry matter production but response varied from cultivar to cultivar and year to year. Drought and panicle neck blast played an important role in limiting upland rice yield response to K fertilization. Potassium application rates associated with maximum grain yield varied from 83 to 127 kg K ha−1 when K was broadcast and from 47 to 67 kg K ha−1 when K was banded. Previous broadcast K, favorable weather and blast resistant cultivars probably contributed to higher yields with K banding in the fourth and fifth growing seasons.

Notes: Abstract In the practical application of landscape ecology to development planning it is essential that there be interdisciplinary collaboration. Three ways of developing this collaboration are discussed. These are (1) use of environmental concepts which directs specialists to focus on landscape interrelationships; (2) geomorphic differentiation to provide a common framework for analysis and (3) a unified methodology based on mathematical modelling, hypothesis testing, and application of statistical theory. Broader implications to policy and administration are also examined.

Notes: Abstract Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), cultivars ARC, Regen Y and Saranac were selected in vitro in a recently developed acid/aluminum toxic media. The new media produced higher initiation rates and higher fresh callus weights than those obtainable with the media described by Meredith and Connor for the selection of aluminum resistant variants in Nicotiana plumbaginofolia. Both rescue and direct initiation yielded adequate amounts of healthy callus for the initiation of embryogenesis. The toxic effect of the acid/aluminum media is expressed in both the percent of explants initiating callus and in the fresh-weights obtained during initiation and two subsequent subcultures.
