Notes: Abstract The use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of superficial tumours on the bladder wall is described. Details are given on the laser, methods of delivering light into the bladder, suitable commercial dosimetry systems and instrumentation suitable for making light measurements on the bladder wall during therapy. New alternative photosensitizers are discussed in some detail. Some early clinical results are presented and the current problems with this type of therapy are highlighted.

Notes: Abstract This study provides a tentative explanation of the spatial distribution of economic activity in Canada, with a focus upon the role of inter-industry linkages. Location of economic activity for each of one hundred and nine three-digit S.I.C. manufacturing industries is explained by use of a “tobit” model incorporating backward and forward linkage variables. The two sets of linkage variables in each tobit equation were reduced by extraction of one principal component from each set, using the matrix of cosines of the variables. A set of control variables completes the set of explanatory variables. The overall explanatory power of our equations was remarkably high and the role of inter-industry linkages is unmistakable.

Notes: Abstract A computer system was designed to telephone voters en masse and play a short campaign message in support of a candidate. The calling program used a new algorithm to detect and leave messages on answering machines, or, when a human answered, to observe telephone etiquette. It was tested in the Raleigh City Council election of 1993. Over 30,000 households were called in both a primary and final election. Immediately after the November election about 600 of the called households were polled by telephone (using human interrogators) to measure the effect of the calling campaign. Among persons reached who actually voted, 52% remembered the candidate's name, and 6.4% said the call had affected their vote.

Notes: Abstract Optical fibres made from heavy metal fluorides have been under development for much of the past decade. There have been significant advances in understanding the fundamental characteristics of these materials. Progress towards achieving low optical losses and in optimizing the design of fluoride fibres for use in long transmission systems is reviewed.

Notes: Abstract Thermally induced migration of Li+-cations from the interlamellar region into the sheet structure of montmorillonite clays has long been known to lead to charge reduction which, depending on conditions, may be partial or virtually complete. Charge regeneration by treatment with strong base involves H+-extraction from the sheets and detailed structural and interlamellar analysis establishes a 1∶1 balance between Li+ and H+ arising from the structural exchange -OH + Li+→-OLi + H+. Such lithiated clays are substantially more thermally and solvent stable than their precursors.

Notes: Abstract Controlled calcination of ion-exchanged Wyoming Bentonite in the presence and absence of ammonia leads to layer charge reductions. Detailed chemical analyses of both unexchangeable and exchangeable species lead to the conclusion that in no case is there migration of the original interlamellar cations into the octahedral region of the layers although, in terms of ionic radius alone, Mg2+, Ni2+ and, possibly Co2+, might be expected to do so. The production of unexchangeable Mg, Ni or Co, is identified as resulting from high temperature hydrolysis leading to hydroxide or oxide formation.
