Notes: Abstract Apple snails (Pomacea paludosa) and eggs and nestlings of anhingas (Anhinga anhinga) and white ibises (Eudocimus albus) were collected in Palm Beach County, Florida from 1989–1991 and analyzed for organochlorine pesticide (OCP) residues. Pesticide residues were not detected in the apple snails. Residues of DDT, with maximum concentrations of 1,200 μg/kg wet weight occurred in 50% of the ibis samples but were not present in the anhinga samples. DDE occurred in 100% of avian samples at concentrations up to 2,100 μg/kg and was at significantly greater concentration in the anhingas. Dieldrin was not detected in the first year of the three-year study, but occurred in the majority of avian samples in the last two years at concentrations up to 610 μg/kg. Additionally, residues of seven pesticides and Aroclor® 1016 were detected infrequently at very low concentrations in the birds. While it is possible that nearby municipal solid waste landfills were the source of the pesticides, no corroborating evidence was found to support this speculation.

Notes: Summary Hemodilution with 40 ml/kg of Fluosol or saline reduced the acetaminophen Vd and the acetaminophen sulfate ClM at 48 or 72 h, respectively. Fluosol hemodilution increased the acetaminophen renal excretion at 24 and 72 h. But at 48 h, Fluosol hemodilution either inhibited the renal secretion of acetaminophen or enhanced its reabsorption.

Notes: Abstract Twelve subjects (3 male) took part in a randomised double-blind four way crossover study designed to examine the cognitive and psychomotor effects of single doses of dextroproxyphene. On four study days one week apart each subject received each study product (i) dextropropoxyphene napsylate 100 mg, (ii) dextropropoxyphene napsylate 200 mg, (iii) lorazepam 2 mg and (iv) placebo. Performance measures were simple reaction time, choice reaction time, number vigilance, memory scanning, word recall (immediate and delayed), word recognition, picture recognition, critical flicker fusion threshold (CFFT) and visual analogue scales of alertness, calmness and contentment. Lorazepam had a marked effect on the range of tests used illustrating the sensitivity of the best battery. This was in contrast to the effects of dextropropoxyphene. A dose related effect in CFFT was detected, the 200 mg dose producing a significant decrease in CFFT throughout the testing period. Dextropropoxyphene also showed a tendency to improve scores on the verbal memory tasks. These data indicate that dextropropoxyphene in the usual doses does not produce significant impairment of cognitive and psychomotor function.

Notes: Abstract Most adult male codling moths, Cydia pomonella (L.), were sterile when they were transferred from 26° to 33°C at various larval stages. Exposures to 33° increased mortality (on average by 26.5%) and resulted in 48.5% and 30.7% fewer matings by treated males and females, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Only 25.6% and 15.4% of adult male laboratory-reared diet-fed codling moths, Laspeyresia pomonella (L.), of a Polish strain mated in a field cage when they were reared from egg to adult with regimens of 1800–2400 or 2200–0400 hr darkness, respectively. However, 38.5%, 29.5%, and 29.4% of similar males mated (apple-reared from egg through larva in a 2200–0400 hr dark regime) after shifting the dark regimen in the late 5th instar to 1800–0400, 2200–0400 hr, or continuous dark, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Circulating antigen of Aspergillus fumigatus was demonstrated in the sera of experimentally infected, cortisone-treated mice and rabbits by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (micro-ELISA), confirming earlier results where fungal antigen had been detected by counter-immunoelectrophoresis (CIE). Peaks of detection of circulating antigen by CIE and micro-ELISA in mice were not simultaneous suggesting that the nature of the predominant antigens may have altered during the course of infection. CIE failed to detect fungal antigen in infected rabbits whereas micro-ELISA monitored antigenemia until death. Both CIE and micro-ELISA demonstrated the rapid clearance of intravenously inoculated Aspergillus-antigen from the rabbit circulation.
