    Notes: Abstract Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for the detection of Poisson distributed signals were evaluated by computer simulation and found to be a set of nearly collinear points when plotted on probability axes. Approximate expressions were derived for the slope and intercept (d′) of the line containing the points. The predictive value of these expressions was verified by measuring slopé and d′ of ROC curves produced from computer simulation of Poisson signals. Estimates of slope and d′ from empirical ROC curves were distributed according to the Gaussian probability density with variance approximately equal to 3/n, where n is the number of stimulus repetitions used to determine the ROC.

    Description / Table of Contents: Sommaire On décrit une technique pour monter un fil de tungtène appointé et une micropipette de verre de façon à ce qu'une longueur, controlée avec précision, de fil dénudé soit exposeé à la pointe. La méthode est fastidieuse et exigeante mais produit des électrodes de fonctionnement très sûr, offrant des enregistrements extracellulaires isolés de cellules nerveuses uniques et de leurs axones.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Eine Technik wird beschrieben, für die Zusammenmontierung eines geschärften Wolframdrahts und einer Glas-Mikropipette, wobei eine genau kontrollierte Menge von blankem Draht an der Spitze frei liegt. Das Verfahren ist langwierig und beanspruchend, jedoch erzeugt es sehr zuverlässige Elektroden, die isolierte extrazelluläre Aufzeichnungen von einzelnen Nervenzellen und ihrer Neurite ergeben.
    Notes: Abstract A technique is described for fitting a sharpened tungsten wire and a glass micropipette together so that a precisely controlled amount of bare wire is exposed at the tip. The method is tedious and demanding but produces very reliable electrodes yielding isolated extracellular recordings from single nerve cells and their axons.
