Notes: Abstract A method to determine activity coefficients of electrolytes in mixed solvent is described which makes use of ion-selective electrode(s) (ISE) and in which a concentrated electrolyte solution is continuously added. Activity coefficients for HCl in methanol-water mixtures containing 0, 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, and 90 weight percent methanol at 25, 35 and 45°C were calculated using the Pitzer equation, and the electromotive force (emf) data of the cell: $$pH - glass electrode\backslash HCl in H_2 O - CH_3 OH\backslash AgCl - Ag$$ The experimental results agree well with literature values indicating that the proposed method is procise and reliable.

Notes: Abstract The absorption spectra of 4f electron transitions of the complexes of neodymium and erbium with 5,7-dibromo-8-hydroxyquinoline in the presence of octylphenol poly(ethyleneglycol)ether have been studied by normal and third-derivative spectrophotometry. The proposed method is free of interference of other rare earths. The calibration graphs were linear up to 18 μg/ml of neodymium and 21 μg/ml of erbium (in the final solution). The derivative molar absorptivities are 395 l.mol–1.cm−1 for neodymium and 3421.mol−1.cm−1 for erbium. The corresponding values of Sandell's sensitivity were 0.36 and 0.49 μg.cm−1, respectively. The relative standard deviations evaluated from ten independent determinations of 2.5 μg/ml of neodymium and erbium are 1.5 and 3.8% for neodymium and 1.8 and 4.1% for erbium in absence and presence of 70 μg of lanthanum, respectively. The detection limits (signal to noise ratio=2) are 0.23 μg/ml for neodymium and 0.30 μg/ml for erbium. The method has been used for the determination of neodymium and erbium in mixed rare earths with satisfactory results.

Notes: Abstract . Molecular matrix elements of a physical operator are expanded in terms of polycentric matrix elements in the atomic basis by multiplying each by a geometrical factor. The number of terms in the expansion can be minimized by using molecular symmetry. We have shown that irreducible tensor operators can be used to imitate the actual physical operators. The matrix elements of irreducible tensor operators are easily computed by choosing rational irreducible tensor operators and irreducible bases. A set of geometrical factors generated from the expansion of the matrix elements of irreducible tensor operator can be transferred to the expansion of the matrix elements of the physical operator to compute the molecular matrix elements of the physical operator. Two scalar product operators are employed to simulate molecular two-particle operators. Thus two equivalent approaches to generating the geometrical factors are provided, where real irreducible tensor sets with real bases are used.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, by means of Sloan's iteration technique, we present a kind of iterative correction method for Galerkin approximations of Wiener-Hopf equations, and show that this is not only a high order method but also an adaptable one.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we deal with a class of the second kind of non-smooth Fredholm integral equations, which are related closely to Wiener-Hopf equations. Using Sloan's iterative technique, we obtain the superconvergent approximations. By means of the correction and collocation methods, we present a kind of iterative correction collocation approximations for this kind of equations, and show that this method is not only a high order and more simple method but also an adaptable one (see e.g. [11]).

Notes: Abstract Perovskite type La0.2Ba0.8Co0.2Fe0.8O3−δ (LBCF) powders were synthesized by modified citrate pyrolysis and LBCF membranes were prepared by isostatic pressing. The oxygen vacancy concentration variation of the LBCF powders becomes substantial above 973 K due to order-disorder transition. The unsteady-steady oxygen permeation flux of the LBCF membrane decreases with time and it takes about 40 min to get the steady state. In the temperature range of 1073–1223 K, the oxygen vacancy diffusivity of the LBCF membrane increases almost a magnitude and the increasing of oxygen permeation flux is mainly attributed to the increasing of oxygen vacancy diffusivity. An in-situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction was used to study the stability of the LBCF membrane, indicating that it has good thermochemical stability at elevated temperatures and low oxygen partial pressures.

Notes: Abstract Silver-impregnated silica gels prepared by us have very good adsorption characteristics for both organic and inorganic radioiodine. Under the operating conditions applied, the adsorption capacity is up to 200 mg I g−1 and the utilization of silver on the sorbent is higher than 90%. The adsorbent can be used to remove iodine from nuclear fuel reprocessing off-gases and from air cleaning systems of nuclear reactors.

Notes: Abstract The problem of finite bimaterial plates with an edge crack along the interface is studied. A complex variable boundary element method is presented and applied to determine the stress intensity factor for finite bimaterial plates. Using the pseudo-orthogonal characteristic of the eigenfunction expansion forms and the well-known Bueckner work conjugate integral and taking the different complex potentials as auxiliary fields, the interfacial stress intensity factors associated with the physical stress-displacement fields are evaluated. The effects of material properties and crack geometry on stress intensity factors are investigated. The numerical examples for three typical specimens with six different combinations of the bimaterial are given.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, a simple approach to enlarging convergence regions of perturbation approximations is proposed. Based on the so-called general Taylor theorems, this approach has a solid mathematical foundation. Moreover, it is rather simple to apply. Two nonlinear equations, the Riccati equation and the Van der Pol equation are used as examples to illustrate the validity and the great potential of this approach.
