    Notes: Abstract Snapping shrimp (Alpheus heterochaelis) produce a fast, well-focused water jet by rapid closure of their specialised snapper claw. As shown previously, water jets may injure the opponent in interspecific encounters (e.g. with small crabs) although no damage was observed in intraspecific encounters. For conspecific receivers the jet represents a potential hydrodynamic signal and can be analysed with the help of mechanosensory hairs. To gain more insight in the biophysical characteristics of the water jet we visualised and analysed jets of tethered snapping shrimp using standard and high speed video recordings. Water jet width increases with increasing distance from the snapper claw tip, and both width and distance increase with increasing snapper claw size. Water jet distances do not increase with increasing claw cocking duration (building up muscle tension) but medium cocking durations of about 550 ms result in longest distances. Mean water jet velocity is 6.5 m s−1 shortly after claw closure but rapidly decreases subsequently. At the mean distance between snapping conspecifics (9 mm) water jet velocities produced by snapping shrimp with larger snapper claws are significantly higher than those of animals with smaller claws. Interestingly, males with equal snapper claw size as females produce significantly faster water jets.

    Notes: Abstract Reversibly blindfolded crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) react to small swimming fish (Astyanax fasciatus mexicanus) approaching or passing nearby with antennal and cheliped movements and body turns (Fig. 3). We studied the accuracy and dynamics of crayfish orientation responses to the previously analyzed hydrodynamic disturbances caused by the fish, mostly produced by tail flicks. Antennal and cheliped movements started slightly before the onset of turning responses (Fig. 4). Antennal sweeps were performed most rapidly. 50% of the appendage sweeps resulted in contacts with the fish (Fig. 5). Most turns were directed toward the stimulus (Fig. 6). Response amplitudes increased with increasing stimulus angle. Turns were accurate for small stimulus angles, but smaller than expected for larger ones. Sweeps of ipsilateral antennae and chelipeds were generally directed backwards, while those of contralateral appendages were smaller and directed forwards. The amplitudes of appendage sweeps first increased with increasing stimulus angle and then decreased again for more caudal stimulus directions. Lateral stimuli (60°–120°) from opposite sides were usually significantly distinguished. The amplitudes of the different elements of orientation behaviour were highly correlated with each other, indicating that they were directed by the same sensory input.

    Notes: Abstract  The interval spanning the Paleocene–Eocene (P/E) transition in the Possagno section consists of 1 m of red marls, including a 4-cm-thick, dark-red "dissolution" clay, which represents the Paleocene/Eocene boundary event. The Possagno section is much more condensed than other Tethyan and North Atlantic sections previously studied; however, in this section the most significant biotic, isotopic and sedimentological events across the P/E boundary can be recognized. The Possagno section spans the following planktic foraminiferal subzones: upper part of M. gracilis Subzone, A. berggreni Subzone, A. sibaiyaensis Subzone and probably lowermost part of P. wilcoxensis Subzone. The quantitative analysis indicates a major increase of low-latitude acarininids, including compressed tropical acarininids just above the boundary clay. This acarininid incursion begins just below the boundary clay but reaches its maximum just above the clay. The planktic foraminiferal faunal turnover is gradual except for the acarininid incursion. The isotopic results show a negative excursion in ∂13C values at the small benthic foraminifera mass extinction event. The acarininid maximum diversity coincides with this isotopic excursion, and reflects an increase in surface seawater temperature. Despite being very condensed, the Possagno section allows us to further confirm that the different biotic, isotopic and sedimentological events recognized in the Spanish sections (Alamedilla, Campo, Caravaca, Zumaya) are not local in nature and allows the establishment of a detailed chronostratigraphic framework to define the P/E boundary stratotype.

    Notes: Summary 1. In view of the surprising recent demonstration that developmentally one-eared female crickets can track sound sources (Huber et al. 1984), we have looked for correlates in the morphological and physiological properties of auditory interneurons of these animals. One foreleg was amputated in the 3rd/4th or penultimate (8/9th) larval instar; in both cases the leg regenerated without developing a functional ear. In the adult stage, these animals were studied first for their phonotactic behavior and then by intracellular recording and staining; three types of auditory interneurons in the prothoracic ganglion were identified: the omega neuron ON1, and the ascending neurons AN1 and AN2. 2. Of these three neuron types, those that normally receive excitatory input from the side now deafferented send dendrites across the midline of the ganglion, along specific pathways, to end in the auditory neuropil of the intact side (Figs. 1–4). 3. The new connections are functional, as shown by the responses of the neurons to synthesized calling songs presented to the remaining ear. With respect to the copying of chirp structure, threshold curves and intensity characteristics, these neurons respond like cells in intact animals that are presented with the same stimulus on the side ipsilateral to the main input region of the neurons (Figs. 2–4). The implication is that in animals with one ear missing, functional pathways within the central nervous system are reorganized, resulting in better orientation of one-eared animals.

    Notes: Abstract In this report, we describe the preparation of a library ofN-linked glycans from whole murine brain obtained by the large-scale hydrazinolysis of an acetone powder of the tissue followed by chromatographic procedures. 84% of the characterized oligosaccharides were found to be anionic, the remainder neutral. The anionic species were successively neutralized by neuraminidase (29%), aq. hydrofluoric acid (30%), and methanolysis (26%), indicating that approximately equal portions were sensitive to desialylation, dephosphorylation and desulfation, respectively. The presence of the sulfated fraction was confirmed by direct35SO4 metabolic labelling. A residual partially characterized fraction was found to be anionic through possession of carboxylic acid groups, unrelated to sialic acid. The purified oligosaccharides, in the absence of their original protein conjugates, were shown to retain those immunological characteristics essential for recognition by a specific monoclonal antibody, LS (412), that is known to recognize a carbohydrate epitope present on a number of neural adhesion molecules and functional in neural cell adhesion. These properties confirm the viability of scaling up the size of the hydrazinolysis procedure and adapting it to whole tissue for the production of glycan libraries and for the probing of structures of interest.

    Notes: Abstract The L2/HNK-1 carbohydrate epitope has been shown to carry an unusual 3′-sulfoglucuronic acid linkedO-glycosidically through a neolactosyl-type back bone to a ceramide residue. Using monoclonal antibodies, the same or a closely related epitope has also been detectedN-glycosidically linked to glycoproteins, amongst them several neural cell adhesion molecules. We used synthetic glycolipids carrying sulfated or non-sulfated glucuronic acid attached to ceramide through glycans of different length to show that not only the sulfated glucuronic acid but also the neolactosyl-type backbone is essential for the recognition of the L2/HNK-1 carbohydrate by a monoclonal antibody, its binding to laminin and its role in neural cell migration and outgrowth of processes from neurons and astrocytes.
