Notes: Abstract 3-(2-(1,10-Phenanthrolyl))-5,6-diphenyl-1,2,4-triazine-chloroaquotriphenyl-tin(IV) (1:1) crystallizes in the orthorhombic system:a=19.195,b=9.144,c=21.642 Å,Z=4, space groupPca21 (No. 29). The structure was determined using the procedure for difference structures (Dirdir) with CuKα diffractometer data, and refined by block-diagonal least squares toR=0.031 for 3287 observed reflections. The tin atom is 5-coordinate with the three phenyl groups forming the equatorial plane. A chlorine atom and a water molecule complete the coordination. The triazine moiety does not coordinate directly to the metal atom. The only interaction is due to two N ⋯ H-O hydrogen bonds formed between two nitrogen atoms from the ligand and the water molecule.

Notes: Summary Complexes of pyridine-2-carbothioamide with diethyltin dichloride, dibenzyltin dichloride and phenyltin trichloride are described. In each case, the chelating agent is bound to the tin(IV) atom by the pyridine nitrogen and the carbothioamide sulphur, giving support to proposals that certain organotin compounds cause enzyme deactivation via the formation of tin-sulphur bonds.

Notes: Summary Levels of mercury and selected pesticides were determined in the muscle tissue of fish obtained from different regions in the state of Utah. The levels of mercury present were generally lower than the guideline limit (0.5 ppm) in most fish except those obtained from one localized area (Willard Bay Reservoir). Predators had the greatest accumulation of mercury. Only small amounts of pesticide; were found in fish. A majority of the tissues contained appreciable levels of PCB's. No definite relationship between the levels of mercury and pesticides or PCB's was noted.

Notes: Summary Levels of mercury and selected pesticides were determined in muscle tissue of chukars, pheasants and waterfowl collected from various regions within the state of Utah. None of the chukar tissue 6% of the pheasant tissue and 4% of the waterfowl tissue analyzed contained mercury concentrations greater than the FDA limit of 0.5 ppm. None of the chukars or pheasants and only 2% of the waterfowl inspected contained dieldrin concentrations above the FDA tolerance level of 0.3 ppm. None of the chukars or pheasants contained levels of DDT + DDE above 5.0 ppm FDA tolerance level. The majority of the waterfowl tissue contained levels of PCB's higher than selected pesticide levels. No definite relationship between the levels of mercury and pesticides or PCB's was noted.

Notes: Abstract Replicated field experiments were conducted at three locations in North Carolina to study the disappearance of parathion from flue-cured tobacco. Immediately after application, parathion residues on green leaves, averaged over locations, were 51.0 and 78.8 ppm, respectively, for the 0.56 and 1.12 kg/ha rates. These residues dropped to 0.63 and 1.50 ppm for the two rates at five days after application. Parathion residues disappeared from green leaves most rapidly during the first 24 hr after application; the loss was over 95 percent in five days and over 99 percent at nine days after application. Residues of paraoxon on green leaves were highest one day after application when concentrations averaged 1.4 and 3.0 ppm for application rates of 0.56 and 1.12 kg/ha, respectively. Loss of total parathion residues during flue-curing ranged from 53 to 87 percent with an average of 72 percent.

Notes: Abstract Water and sediment samples were taken from five sites on the Ovens and King Rivers (Australia) and analyzed for organochlorine pesticides residues. Residue concentrations were also determined in water samples taken at two hourly intervals during a 32-h storm flow event on the Ovens river. Residues detected in the rivers were most likely transported from surrounding land and upstream sources. The concentrations of DDE, DDT, and dieldrin residues were not different in different depositional areas, although increased proportions of DDD were found in sediments in the quiescent areas of the rivers. More than 70% of the dieldrin residues were found in the unsettled sediment fraction. Changes in flow during the storm event had a marked effect on the residues detected in the water column. DDT was present in largest amounts, which was most likely due to its association with nonfilterable organic matter.

Notes: Abstract The crystal structure and orientation of As precipitates in annealed low-temperature GaAs (LT-GaAs) layers have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Three types of As precipitates were identified in layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy at substrate temperatures from 180° to 210° C. In the monocrystalline LT-GaAs layers small “pseudocubic” As precipitates (2–3 nm diameter) coherent with the GaAs lattice were observed. These precipitates lose their coherency when a certain critical size is exceeded. Precipitates of similar sizes are occasionally found for which a TEM lattice image cannot be obtained. These precipitates are believed to be amorphous. Larger As precipitates with a hexagonal structure (〉4 nm diameter) were also found in the layers. These hexagonal As precipitates were observed to be largest near structural defects. The effect of these precipitates on the structure and on the electronic properties of the host GaAs is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The problems of how a free convection boundary layer adjusts to a small but sudden change in plate angle, and how it leaves a body with a wedge-shaped trailing edge are discussed. The angle is taken to beO(G r −3/28) so that the flow near the discontinuity can be described by a double deck structure. For plates with very small angle changes, the lower deck equations can be linearised and the resulting equations have been solved using Fourier transforms. In the general case, the lower deck equations have to be solved numerically and results are given for both concave and convex corners and for a range of wedge angles. It is found that for sufficiently large angles there is a region of reversed flow in each case, in the first and last cases in a region centred on the discontinuity, while for convex corners it is downstream of the corner.

Notes: Summary A theoretical description is sought for the mechanisms whereby the attached motion past a finite flat plate is gradually transformed into the quite different grossly separated motion past a bluff body, as the body's thickness increases from zero to a finite value at high Reynolds numbers. The theory is based largely on the free stream line inviscid approach allied to the viscous triple-deck requirement at separation, for laminar symmetric flow of an incompressible fluid. Some surprising and potentially significant phenomena are found to arise as the body thickness increases; and the geometries of the trailing and leading edges have a crucial effect on the occurrence and position of separation. The main properties found are: the match with the Kirchhoff theoryat one extreme; at the other extreme, the match with the triple-deck account for wedged trailing edges; in-between, a “cut-off” stage during which the wake dimensions and the drag abruptly increase; and, also in-between, a nonlinear stage in whichleading edge separation can occur, depending delicately on the precise shape of the leading edge. These properties arise from the strong viscous effect at separation. Again, whether the closure of the recirculatory flow region is blunt or not, the theory is consistent with the results of earlier work for the above extremes.Nonuniqueness/bifurcation of the separated flow solutions is also found to arise for certain profiles.
