    Notes: Summary Temporal response characteristics of three cell types of maleA. polyphemus, each responding to a different pheromone component, have been measured using series of short (20 ms) pheromone pulses. The stimuli were delivered through capillaries 20 μm in diameter and applied to single olfactory sensilla trichodea. Two of three cell types sensitive to (E,Z)-6,11-hexadecadienal and (E,Z)-4,9-tetradecadienyl acetate are able to resolve at least 5 stimuli/s whereas the third, responding to the major pheromone component (E,Z)-6,11-hexadecadienyl acetate, is slower, resolving only about 2 stimuli/s. These results suggest that receptor cells are able to respond to pulses of pheromone concentration as they occur downwind from a point source. The time-averaged number of nerve impulses does not seem to be a reliable measure of the amount of pheromone reaching the sensillum. Responses of the cells thus reflect the non-uniform distribution of pheromone in a plume rather than the average concentration.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of pheromone preexposure on flight behavior of male Oriental fruit mothCydia molestawere investigated in laboratory experiments using a wind-tunnel and in an orchard through insect releases at the center of a grid of pheromone traps. In the wind-tunnel experiments, the proportion of insects performing various behavioral phases was found to depend on the intensity and duration of the adapting stimulus and the recovery time allowed between exposure and measurement, indicating adaptation of at least some elements of the sensory system. The orchard experiments exhibited similar adaptation effects at similar exposure levels, causing the entry of treated insects into the traps to be delayed compared to controls and a reduction in insects caught for the highest preexposure concentration. The levels of pheromone exposure required to produce significant adaptation were, however, found to be much higher than could be expected under conditions of release of synthetic pheromone for insect control through mating disruption.

    Notes: Abstract A survey has been carried out to identify the major sex pheromone gland components in 30 species of Australian tortricid moths. While more than half the species examined have (Z)-11-, (E)-11-, and/or (Z)-9-tetrade-cenyl acetates as the principal components, these compounds were not detected in some plesiomorphic taxa where combinations of (Z)-5 and (Z)-7 or (Z)-8 and (Z)-10 isomers are present. The results are discussed in relation to tortricid classification and current theories on pheromone evolution.

    Notes: Abstract The composition of the sex pheromone ofSesamia grisescens was investigated using gas chromatography, electroantennograms, and field trapping. (Z)-11-Hexadecenyl acetate and (Z)-11-hexadecenol were identified in field tests as the major attractants. Trapping trials identified a 3:2 blend of these compounds as the most effective bait. Gas chromatography indicated the presence of hexadecyl acetate. (Z)-9-hexadecenyl acetate, (Z)-9-hexadecenol, and (E)-11-hexadecenyl acetate in the pheromone gland, but these compounds had no significant effect on trap catches when added to the major components. Traps baited with the major components in a 1:1 ratio caught more male moths than traps baited with virgin females.

    Notes: Abstract Inhibition of the behavioral responses of maleEpiphyas postvittana moths by theZ isorner of the major component of the sex pheromone,E11-14: OAc, was studied in a wind tunnel. Inhibition was detectable at a Z isomer concentration of 10% that of the major component and was greatest when it was added to the same source as the pheromone. Inhibition declined rapidly as the inhibitor was moved across-wind away from the pheromone source but was largely maintained when the sources were separated upwind or downwind. The results showed that the insects possess a high degree of temporal resolution for odor plumes of different composition.
