Notes: Abstract Asr1, Asr2 andAsr3 are three homologous clones isolated from tomato whose expression is believed to be regulated by abscisic acid (ABA); the corresponding genes thus participate in physiological and developmental processes such as responses of leaf and root to water stress, and fruit ripening. In this report, results obtained with Near Isogenic Lines reveal thatAsr1, Asr2 andAsr3 represent three different loci. In addition, we map these genes on the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) map of the tomato genome by using an F2 population derived from an interspecific hybrid crossL. esculentum × L. penelli. RFLP data allow us to map these genes on chromosome 4, suggesting that they belong to a gene family. The elucidation of the genomic organization of theAsr gene family may help in understanding the role of its members in the response to osmotic stress, as well as in fruit ripening, at the molecular level.

Notes: Abstract The reaction product of manganese(II) chloride and 2,5-diamino-1,3,4-thiadiazole was prepared and characterized by means of structural, and spectroscopic measurements. The crystals are monoclinic, space groupC2/c, witha=12.403(4),b=10.742(2),c=10.449(5)Å,β=92.61(3)°, andZ=4. The structure was solved by the heavy-atom method, and least-squares refinement of structural parameters led to a conventionalR factor of 0.020 for 1518 independent reflections. The structure consists of discrete molecules with twofold symmetry in which the manganese atom is coordinated in slightly distorted octahedral geometry by two nitrogen, two oxygen and two chlorine atoms.

Notes: Abstract Sβgly and CelB are well-studied hyperthermophilic glycosyl hydrolases, isolated from the Archaea Sulfolobus solfataricus and Pyrococcus furiosus, respectively. Previous studies revealed that the two enzymes are phylogenetically related; they are very active and stable at high temperatures, and their overall three-dimensional structure is very well conserved. To acquire insight in the molecular determinants of thermostability and thermoactivity of these enzymes, we have performed a detailed comparison, under identical conditions, of enzymological and biochemical parameters of Sβgly and CelB, and we have probed the basis of their stability by perturbations induced by temperature, pH, ionic strength, and detergents. The major result of the present study is that, although the two enzymes are remarkably similar with respect to kinetic parameters, substrate specificity, and reaction mechanism, they are strikingly different in stability to the different physical or chemical perturbations induced. These results provide useful information for the design of further experiments aimed at understanding the structure–function relationships in these enzymes.

Notes: Abstract: The evaluation of the total force of magnetic origin acting upon a body in a stationary magnetic field is often carried out using the so-called magnetic energy (or co-energy) method, which is based on the derivation of the magnetic energy (or co-energy) with respect to a virtual rigid displacement of the considered body. The application of this method is usually justified by resorting to the energy conservation principle, written in terms both of electrical and of mechanical quantities. In this paper we shall re-examine the whole matter in the context of classical thermodynamics, in order to obtain a more comprehensive and general proof of the validity of the energy (or co-energy) approach and to point out its limitations. Two typical configurations will be discussed; in the first one, the field sources are represented by conducting bodies carrying free currents, whereas in the second one a permanent magnet creates the driving field. All magnetic materials are assumed to be non-hysteretic and permanent magnets are represented by means of the well-known linear model in the second quadrant of the (B,H) plane.

Notes: Abstract. ZnS nanoparticles were synthetized using water-containing AOT reversed micelles as nanoreactors and characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy), SAED (selected-area electron diffraction), and digital image processing. The experimental data evidence a slow growing process of fractal-like ZnS nanoparticles’ coupled with a change of their photophysical properties. Both these processes are well described by power laws. The nanoparticles size is mainly controlled by the micellar size. After evaporation of the organic solvent, it has been found that the deposit is constituted by smaller and more stable ZnS nanoparticles bathed in a surfactant matrix.

Notes: Abstract. We have experimentally studied thermal effects in highly pumped Ti:sapphire crystals in the 140–340 K temperature range. We demonstrate that a critical temperature exists, which depends on pumping and probing conditions, below which detrimental thermal effects completely disappear. In particular, we show that in a typical high-intensity Ti:sapphire amplifier, thermal lensing and wave-front distortions can be suppressed keeping the crystal temperature lower than ∼230 K.

Notes: Abstract. Many fundamental processes of radiation–matter interaction, which take place on the ultra-short time scale, can now be directly investigated by using few-optical-cycles light pulses with duration 〈10 fs. We discuss two techniques for generating such pulses: broad-band parametric amplification, which allows the generation of pulses in the visible range suitable for spectroscopy, and compression of high-energy light pulses in a hollow fiber. As an example of application in time-resolved spectroscopy we report results of pump–probe experiments in a prototypical conjugated molecule, namely sexithiophene. The new laser sources, due to their characteristics of peak power and coherence, also allow the exploration of new fields of experimental physics, such as extreme nonlinear optics. We focus on high-order harmonics, showing that a high-energy bunch of photons, up to the X-ray-energy region, with coherence typical of laser radiation and time duration comparable to or shorter than the exciting pulses, can be generated.
