Notes: Abstract An approximate numerical method for the estimation of the velocity exponent in (small-scale) flow-through porous and gauze electrodes is presented. The method can also be employed to determine if a plug-flow or a parabolic-flow model offers a more reliable representation of the experimental behaviour of the electrode.

Notes: Abstract In the present work, results of the interaction of O2 with polycrystalline titanium using AES, and ELS techniques, are presented. Changes in the shapes of Ti(LMV) and Ti(LMM) transitions and in the Ti(LM)O(V)/Ti(LMV) and Ti(LMV) Ti(LMM) amplitude ratios as well as a shift of the 34 eV loss peak [Ti(3p level], are studied as function of the oxygen exposure. At O2 pressures equal or less than 10−6 Pa and exposure up to 2000 L(O2) (weak oxidation), the Ti(LM)O(V)/Ti(LMV) and Ti(LMV)/Ti(LMM) ratios show three clearly distinct regions: (i) up to 20L there is a chemisorbed phase with the Ti(LMV)/Ti(LMM) ratio remaining constant and a fast linear increase in the Ti(LM)O(V)/Ti(LMM) ratio. (ii) At exposures higher than 20L the oxidation begins being characterized by a linear variation of the Ti(LM)O(V)/Ti(LMV) and Ti(LMV)/Ti(LMV) ratios, with positive and negative slopes, respectively. (iii) At 125L there is a change in both slopes but no stable value is achieved, despite the O(KLL)/Ti(LMM) ratio remains constant. Hence, it can be concluded that TiO is the final oxide obtained after that treatment, from features like the shape of the transitions and a maximum shift of 3eV of the Ti(3p) level, complemented with ESD experiments. On the other hand, experiments at pressures higher than 10−4Pa with or without the surfaces at 900K (strong oxidation) indicate that the most likely final oxide is TiO2.

Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Il lavoro presenta uno studio teorico di elettroni solvatati a forte diluizione in alogenuri alcalini fusi.
Notes: Summary Properties of solvated electrons at high dilution in four molten alkali halides are investigated theoretically. A self-consistent evaluation of the bound ground state of the electron and of the surrounding liquid structure, already developed in a previous paper, is compared with the results of NMR hyperfine shifts and magnetic-susceptibility measurements. The absorption bands associated with Franck-Condon 1s→2p and 1s→3p transitions are calculated and compared with the available data of optical absorption, with special emphasis on the detailed analysis by Yuh and Nachtrieb for molten CsCl. An instability of the excited states against ionic relaxation and the origin of a finite lifetime for the ground state are also discussed. Finally, the perturbation induced by the solvated electron in the fundamental absorption of the molten salt is estimated.

Notes: Abstract We study the localization length λ and fractal dimensionalityD of wave functions in disordered one-dimensional systems. We extend previous studies to consider the role of the off-diagonal disorder in the problem. Our results show that off-diagonal disorder introduces qualitatively different behaviour of λ andD from that of purely diagonal disorder. As a more realistic physical description of electronic properties in amorphous materials has to include the off-diagonal disorder as well, these features are of physical interest.

Notes: Abstract Different methods to prepare superconducting mono- and multifilamentary T1(I223) tapes were developed. High-purity ceramics could be produced by ex-situ or in-situ reaction under a high isostatic gas pressure. Tapes prepared by the PIT method and an in-situ reaction carried out close to the melting point of the oxide were relatively dense and textured. Interesting results were obtained for samples where part of the oxygen atoms in Tl(1223) had been substituted by fluorine. Critical current densities up to 20'000 A/cm2 (77 K, 0 T) were reached for tapes produced by the PIT method. Well textured samples were obtained by electrophoretic deposition, the deposited Tl(1223) grains being produced by a synthesis involving substantial melting.

Notes: Abstract The conventional powder-in-tube technique does not allow to produce textured Tl(1223) tapes. An electrophoretic deposition technique was used to produce uniform layers of controlled thickness on Ag substrates by a simple and reproducible procedure. A high degree of texture, comparable with the one generally observed for Bi-based tapes was obtained thanks to the appropriate grain morphology, by simply alternating deposition and uniaxial pressing. After annealing, critical current densities of 11'000 A/cm2 were reached.

Notes: Abstract The influence of changes in the nominal composition and preparation conditions on the formation of Tl(1223) under a high isostatic gas pressure was studied. Optimization of the cation substitution allowed to increase the phase purity, whereas substitution of small amounts of oxygen by fluorine decreased the formation temperature of the Tl(1223) phase and extended the temperature range favorable for grain growth. A two-step reaction involving substantial melting produced well shaped, plate-like grains.
