Notes: Summary The localization of the wave function on the scale length of a single monolayer has been studied by magnetophotoluminescence in GaSb/AlGaSb quantum wells. The studied range of well width includes the direct-indirect transition involvingL-point conduction states and Γ-point valence states induced by quantum size effects. Separate carrier localization dominates at higher field values (B〉2T), whereas the excitonic effects are important only in the low field range. Variational calculations of the excitonic transverse extension provide a quantitative description of the experimental data. The dependence of the effective reduced mass on the well width has been obtained experimentally by magnetoluminescence that is highly sensitive to the modifications of the wave function, even on the scale of a single monolayer.

Notes: Summary Quantum wire heterostructures, such as V- and T-shaped wires, are very promising candidates for low-threshold lasing. A crucial issue is the excitonicvs. free-carrier nature of the radiative recombination. Here, we report on magnetophotoluminescence studies of GaAs and InGaAs V-shaped wires that allow to discriminate different regimes of radiative recombination.

Notes: Summary A natural yttrotitanite containing iron impurities is studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy. Isomeric shift data show that both trivalent and divalent iron are present. Comparison between quadrupole splitting of trivalent iron and XRD structural data for iron-free titanite yields information on the effect of titanium iron substitution.

Notes: Summary We present a comprehensive discussion of the excitonic properties of V-shaped GaAs and InGaAs quantum wires grown on patterned substrates. Systematic linear and non-linear spectroscopic studies have been performed in order to clarify the impact of lateral confinement on the exciton wave function, namely: enhanced exciton binding energy, localization in magnetic field, recombination from excited states and multiphoton absorption. The careful evaluation of the electron confinement energies, based on the actual quantum wire profile obtained by TEM micrographs, including the internal piezoelectric field induced by off-diagnoal terms of strain tensor, reproduces quite well the measured one-dimensional states. Finally, application of quantum wires in a p-i-n wave guide for bistable operation is demonstrated.

Notes: Abstract  Crystallographic determinations on natural olivine single crystals of mantle composition and origin, carried out by in situ neutron diffraction at high temperature, show that the octahedrally co-ordinated Fe2+ and Mg cations undergo two successive trends of cation ordering with increasing temperature. An initial slight preference of Fe2+ for site M1, up to a temperature of about 850 °C, is followed by a reverse-ordering reaction with a site preference exchange between the two cations. The cross-over between the two regimes of ordering, corresponding to a situation of complete disorder, occurs at about 900 °C. Above this temperature Fe2+ progressively and strongly segregates into site M2 up to 1300 °C, the practical limit of the experimental setup utilized in the experiments. Care was taken to ensure that no chemical changes occurred in the crystals (i.e. oxidation), as testified by Mössbauer spectroscopy determinations carried out before and after the heat treatment. The cation-ordering behaviour is reflected in temperature-dependent changes of geometrical and atomic displacement parameters occurring in the octahedral sites M1 and M2. A thermodynamical explanation of this behaviour is proposed in terms of a prevailing vibrational contribution to entropy.

Notes: Abstract Three samples of levyne and two of erionite from three different localities of Sardinia are described. In two samples, levyne and erionite are intergrown by epitaxy. The levynes exhibit close chemical compositions with Ca〉Na〉K; as for their lattice constants, a is very similar in all three samples, while c of one sample is rather smaller than that of the other two. Unit cell dimensions of both erionites and chemical composition of one are also given. In addition, the following data are reported for the levynes: refractive indices for all three samples, density for two and DTA for one. The existence of levyne-erionite intergrowth is emphasized, and support is given to the idea that this intergrowth is much more common than the literature would suggest.

Notes: Abstract Mont Semiol (also called Mont Semiouse), Montbrison, Loire, France, is the only place where the zeolite offrettite is known to occur. Now, a new mineral, Mazzite, has been found in the same locality. It occurs in the form of tiny needles, and its properties closely match those of the synthetic “molecular sieve” Ω. The chemical formula is Na0.03K1.91Ca1.35Mg1.99[Al9.77Si26.54O72]·28.03 H2O. Lattice dimensions are a=18.392 Å, c=7.646 Å, with P 63/mmc as most probable space group; Dcalc.=2.108. Offrettite and mazzite occur in association with phillipsite, chabazite, calcite and siderite. The mineral has been so named in honour of Prof. Fiorenzo Mazzi.

Notes: Abstract Between 200° C and 400° C stellerite (Ca8Al16Si56O144×58H2O) exists as a collapsed phase B which very rapidly transforms, upon partial rehydration at room conditions, into a more stable phase C. After a considerably longer period of rehydration phase C transforms into a phase with cell parameters similar to those of the natural phase. Phase B results from a rotation of the fundamental structural unit and the consequent lowering of the symmetry from Fmmm to Amma. In stellerite B, as in barrerite B and C, the aluminosilicate framework is interrupted by the statistical breaking of an oxygen bridge. In this case however the resulting hydroxyl positions are not symmetrically equivalent and therefore enjoy full freedom. This explains the different thermal behaviours of stellerite and barrerite and allows one to formulate hypotheses on the dehydration dynamics of stilbite.

Notes: Abstract  The partitioning of Fe and Mg between the M1 and M2 octahedral sites of olivine has been investigated by in situ time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction. The degree of M-cation order was determined from direct measurements of site occupancies in a synthetic sample of Fo50Fa50 heated to 1250 °C at the Fe-FeO oxygen buffer. Fe shows slight preference for M1 at temperatures below about 600 °C, progressively disordering on heating to this temperature. Above 630 °C, the temperature at which site preferences cross over (T cr), Fe preferentially occupies M2, becoming progressively more ordered into M2 on increasing temperature. The cation-ordering behaviour is discussed in relation to the temperature dependence of the M1 and M2 site geometries, and it is suggested that vibrational entropy, crystal field effects and changes in bond characteristics play a part in the cross-over of partitioning behaviour. The temperature dependence of site ordering is modelled using a Landau expansion of the free energy of ordering of the type ΔG = −hQ + gTQ +   (T − T c)Q 2 +   Q 4, with a/h = 0.00406 K−1, b/h = 2.3, T c = 572 K and g/h = 0.00106 K−1. These results suggest that the high-temperature ordering behaviour across the forsterite-fayalite join will have a bearing on the activity-composition relations of this important rock-forming mineral, and indicate that Fe-Mg olivine solid solutions become less ideal as temperature increases.

Notes: Summary Contraction and relaxation in glycerinated amoeba models are controlled by the same factors which are known to control streaming in demembranated, living cytoplasm of amoeba. Threshold calcium concentration for the transition from relaxed to contracted state of glycerinated model was found to be about 10−6 M.
