Notes: Abstract Gerbils administered iron dextran are the only animal species which have been shown to develop hemochromatosis of the liver and heart in the same manner as transfusion dependent homozygous thalassemics. The iron chelating hydroxypyridinone, CP94, has been administered prophylactically to iron overloaded gerbils in a dosing regime which favors the formation of bidentate chelated iron, to examine the possibility of additional toxicity being caused to the liver and heart by the bidentate chelated iron complex. Hepatic iron accumulation was inhibited by CP94 administration for up to 6 weeks, but not after 20 weeks. Iron accumulation in the heart was increased significantly after 6 and 20 weeks of chelator treatment. Pathological changes in both organs were markedly more severe after 20 weeks in chelator treated animals. There was a higher incidence of cardiofibrosis and more extensive liver fibrosis in iron overloaded, chelator treated animals after 20 weeks.

Notes: Abstract An electromagnetic sounding system has been developed to map the shallow electrical conductivity structure of the deep sea floor. The instrument consists of a magnetic source and several colinear magnetic receivers forming an array which is towed along the seafloor. The source generates a time varying magnetic field; the shape of the resulting magnetic field waveform at the receivers depends on the electrical conductivity below the seafloor between the receivers and the source. The instrument can be towed systematically over a study area under acoustic transponder or GPS navigation to construct a map of the electrical conductivity. Towing speeds of greater than 1 m s−1 (2 knots) can be achieved without adversely effecting data quality. The instrument is sufficiently robust to survive continual contact with thinly sedimented, abrasive basalt. We present the first results from a deployment in August, 1990 near the Cleft Segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge along an 8 km track to the west of the spreading center. Unforeseen problems with the instrument restricted the utility of the measurements for constructing detailed vertical conductivity profiles, but the measurements were adequate to determine an average conductivity in the upper 25 m, at more than 70 stations. The conductivity was found to vary from 0.1 to 0.4 S/m along the track.

Notes: Abstract A novel variation of the geophysical technique known as MOSES, for Magnetometric Off-Shore Electrical Sounding, has been developed to map the electrical properties of the sea floor in Aretic regions. The particular target is the permafrost layer under the Beaufort Sea, a layer containing frozen or partially frozen sediment from 100 to 600 m thick underlying shallow sea water, typically 10 to 100 m deep, and several tens of metres of soft sediment. A detailed knowledge of the location and physical properties of the permafrost layer is essential for accurate interpretation of reflection seismic data. The permafrost can contain pockets, regions or layers of gas hydrate. The latter is both a possible resource and a hazard to drilling operations or hydrocarbon production. A local map of the permafrost zone is essential geotechnical information required prior to the construction of an offshore structure or pipeline. The MOSES method is particularly suitable for offshore electrical mapping as it can be made relatively insensitive to the shielding effects of the highly conductive sea water, in sharp contrast to many other electrical techniques. The transmitter is a vertical, long-wire bipole, extending from the sea surface to the sea floor. A commutated current is fed to two large electrodes: one near the sea surface and the other on the sea floor. The return current is through the sea water and the subjacent sediment. The receiver consists of two horizontal orthogonal coils located on the sea floor, and the data are measurements of two components of the magnetic field as a function of frequency and transmitter-receiver horizontal separation. The electrical conductivity of a sample of frozen material is much smaller than that of unfrozen or partially frozen sediment of the same type. Frozen and unfrozen thin layers are often observed sequentially throughout the geological section. The resistivity measured as a function of depth by an electrical logging tool is consequently highly variable. The resulting depth-averaged resistivity, the resistivity resolved by a surface electrical method, is macro-an-isotropic. An experimental design study reveals that both the vertical and horizontal averaged resistivities could be determined in a MOSES sounding without vertical scale distortion. A test of the methodology in very shallow water was conducted in the spring of 1986 at a site, approximate coordinates (70° N, 134.5° W), 85 km north-west of the town of Tuktoyaktuk. The instrumentation was lowered and subsequently recovered through holes in the ice which covers the Beaufort Sea at that time of the year. The transmitter power was obtained from a single lead-acid battery. Transmitter-receiver separations ranged from 10 to 300 m. A rapid increase in sediment resistivity with depth was observed. The higher resistivity values are consistent with those expected for a partially frozen zone.

Notes: Abstract  Results of a detailed geophysical transect across the transform continental margin off Ghana, at the eastern end of the Romanche Fracture Zone in the Equatorial Atlantic, are presented. Seismic refraction, single-channel seismic reflection, gravity, and magnetic data were collected, and seismic, gravity, and magnetic models along the transect are shown. The 6- to 11-km-wide ocean–continent transition (OCT) is characterized by a high-velocity, high-density, high-magnetization crustal zone. The models show no evidence for any underplating of the continental crust adjacent to the margin but minor melting and intrusion of the continental crust may have occurred in the vicinity of the OCT.

Notes: Abstract A newly developed towed transient electromagnetic (TEM) system is capable of measuring the electrical conductivity of the uppermost 5–10 m of sediments on the sea floor. The profiles of conductivity may be interpreted to give the porosity and likely texture of the bottom sediments. Recent tests of the system have demonstrated that data may be collected continuously in a surveying mode. Results from Knight Inlet, British Columbia, are in good agreement with sea floor samples from the area. Applications for the system include the rapid identification of sediment types for dredging operations, geotechnical surveys, or reconnaissance mapping of Quaternary geology.

Notes: Abstract The metabolism of the s-triazine herbicide atrazine has been compared in Zea mays seedlings and cell suspension cultures. The rapid detoxification observed in the shoots of whole plants was not seen in the cultured cells. This difference in metabolism could be accounted for by the varying substrate specificities of the isoenzymes of glutathione S-transferase (EC 2.5.1.18) present in the plant and the cells. A single form of the enzyme isolated from leaf tissue conjugated both atrazine and the chloracetanilide herbicide metolachlor. However, the two isoenzymes present in suspension-cultured cells although active against metolachlor, showed no activity toward atrazine. Following purification, the major form of transferase present in the cells was physically similar to the enzyme isolated from leaf (Mr=55000). Both proteins were dimers of subunit Mr=26300, and with isoelectric points in the range pH 4.3-4.9. The minor form of the enzyme present in culture showed a greater specificity for metolachlor than the major species. In addition the overall activity and ratio of the two isoenzymes varied over the culture growth cycle. These findings illustrate the need for characterizing enzymes involved in herbicide detoxification in plant cell cultures.

Notes: Abstract The metabolic relationship between littorine and hyoscyamine has been monitored in transformed roots of Datura stramonium. Quantification by GC of unlabelled littorine and by GCMS of 13C-labelled littorine demonstrated that exogenously added littorine (0.1 mm) was significantly metabolised (35%) to hyoscyamine. In contrast, exogenously added hyoscyamine was not metabolised to littorine, indicating that this conversion is irreversible. The conversion of littorine to hyoscyamine was suppressed by P-450 oxidase inhibitors (particularly clotrimazole), implicating the involvement, at least in part of a cytochrome P-450 activity operating hyoscyamine biosynthesis.

Notes: Abstract Juvenile shrimp, Crangon crangon L., were maintained in water-soluble crude oil fractions at 10°, 15° and 20°C. During chronic exposure to oil fractions, a reduction in respiration and growth rate occurred which was related to strength of the extract. Mortality increased with strength of oil fraction and was highest at 20°C. Calculation of carbon budgets indicated that the extract reduced net carbon turnover at each temperature. Physiological consequences resulting from exposure to the oil fractions are discussed.
