    Notes: Abstract An agent-oriented methodology is presented for representation, acquisition, and processing of manufacturing knowledge along with analysis and modeling of an intelligent manufacturing system (IMS). An intelligent manufacturing system adopts heterarchical and collaborative control as its information system architecture. The behavior of the entire manufacturing system is collaboratively determined by many interacting subsystems that may have their own independent interests, values, and modes of operation. The subsystems are represented as agents. An agent's architecture and task decomposition method are presented. The agent-oriented methodology is used to analyze and model an intelligent machine cell. An intelligent machine center is considered as an autonomous, modular, reconfigurable and fault-tolerant machine tool with self-perception, decision making, and self-process planning, able to cooperate with other machines through communication. The common object request broker architecture (CORBA) distributed software control system was developed as a simple prototype. A case study illustrates an intelligent machine center.

    Notes: Abstract Mass customization, aiming at delivering an increasing product variety that best serves customer needs while keeping mass production efficiency, has recently received numerous attention and popularity in industry and academia alike. This paper presents a methodology of developing product family architecture (PFA) to rationalize product development for mass customization. Systematic steps are developed to formulate a PFA in terms of functional, technical and physical views. The diverse needs of customers are matched with the capabilities of a firm through systematic planning of modularity in three consecutive views. The development of a PFA provides a unifying integration platform to synchronize market positioning, commonality employment and manufacturing scale of economy across the entire product realization process. A case study in an electronics company is reported to illustrate the potential and the feasibility of PFA methodology.

    Notes: Summary Maximum absorptive capacities (Vmax) for the jejunum and ileum corrected for the presence of an unstirred layer of water have been calculated for glycine, valine and methioninein vivo in fowls per unit surface area and per region. Vmax per cm2 showed that ileal enterocytes had a greater absorbing capacity than jejunal for glycine and valine but not for methionine. Vmax for glycine and valine, calculated for the whole jejunum and ileum, however, were not different but for methionine the jejunal value was 1.9 times greater than the ileal.

    Notes: Abstract It is well known that the inversion of populations in the ammonia maser leads to stimulated emission, and hence amplification, of microwaves. However, it is not well known that an inverted medium also leads to the superluminal propagation of off-resonance, finite-band-width wave packets, whose phase, group, energy, and “signal” velocities, as defined by Sommerfeld and Brillouin, all exceed the vacuum speed of lightc. Einstein causality is not violated, since the front velocity isc. The inversion of populations also implies a parelectric medium with negative electric susceptibility. (Parelectric media should not be confused withparaelectric media, which are ferroelectrics just above their Curie points.) The existence of a parelectric medium implies the possibility of the levitation of an electrical charge in the vacuum above this medium, as well as stable electrostatic configurations of charges placed inside an evacuated cavity surrounded by this medium. The apparent violation of Earn-shaw's theorem will be discussed. Numerical estimates for a proposed experiment to observe parelectricity will be given.

    Notes: Summary Feeding by the isopod, Oniscus asellus, produced changes in the sulfur constituents of leaf litter substrates (Acer negundo, A. saccharum, Fagus grandifolia, Picea rubens, and Tsuga canadensis). Isopod consumption of leaf litter generally accelerated the mineralization of carbon-bonded S and increased the formation of ester sulfate in all substrates. After the isopod egestion of A. negundo leaves, fecal decomposition over 6 weeks increased total S concentration from 68 to 120 μmol S/g due to the catabolism of organic carbon. During the same period sulfate decreased from 34 to 20 μmol S/g and carbon-bonded S increased from 34 to 100 μmol S/g. Thus the total S pool in aged feces became enriched with organic S (83% of total S). Macroinvertebrate consumption accelerated the transformation of S constituents and the carbon-bonded S concentration approached that of the Oa organic horizon of a northern hardwood forest.

    Notes: Abstract Installation of heating cables for warming soil was used to evaluate the effect of disturbance on soil solution chemistry within a northern hardwood forest (Adirondack Mountains, New York). Differences in response among treatments suggested the importance of both the depth and timing of cable installation. There were increases (p〉0.05) in many solutes within pilot study plots in which “surrogate cable” was installed at 15 cm depth. Most notably, mean nitrate concentrations for the 1st year following disturbance were 744 μeq l–1 at 15 cm depth compared to 7 μeq l–1 for the non-disturbed control. A comparison of pilot plots with 5 cm cable depth and an unheated soil-warming control plot with the same cable disturbance showed that the seasonality of soil disturbance may have a key role in response to disturbance. The soil solution response was diminished if installation occurred during the spring, a period of rapid uptake of nitrogen by vegetation. Mean nitrate concentrations were 176 μeq l–1 for 5-cm pilot plots (installed in fall 1991) versus 6 μeq l–1 for 5-cm, unheated soil-warming control plots (installed in spring 1992). Disturbance effects were attenuated over time and not generally apparent 1 year after installation.

    Notes: Summary Oniscus asellus produced changes in the nutrients leached from Oie and Oa horizons of a hardwood forest soil. Soil with isopods lost more K+ (54%) from the Oie horizon and more Ca2+ (25%), Mg2+ (40%), and water-extractable S (23%) from the Oa horizon than soil without isopods. In contrast, soils with isopods lost less Ca2+ (39076) from the Oie horizon and less dissolved C-bonded S (33%) from the Oa horizon than soil without isopods. In addition, the Oia and Oa horizons exhibited different nutrient dynamics. When isopods were present, the Oa horizon leachates accumulated more Na+ K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, NO3 − , water-soluble SO4 2−, and dissolved C-bonded S, and the Oie horizon retained more of these nutrients. The type of leaching solution also had a major effect on nutrients. Leaching with a simulated soil solution resulted in smaller nutrient losses for K+ and Mg2+ in both horizons and for Na+, Ca2+, and NO3 − in the Oa horizon than leaching with distilled water.
