Notes: Abstract The electrodeposition of aluminium on mild steel from a dry and HCl-free AlCl3/NaCl melt (80 wt% purified AlCl3, 20 wt% NaCl) has been studied. Electropolishing the substrate in the same electrolytic bath produced satisfactory electroplates with almost 100% current efficiency. The quality of the plate has been examined through photomicroscopy of the cross-section, profilometry, electron microscopy, and electron microprobe analysis of the surface of the electroplate. It has been suggested that the greyish colour of the plate is most probably due to the presence of iron as an impurity in the electroplated aluminium.

Notes: Abstract The electrodeposition of aluminium on brass (63/37) from a dry AlCl3/NaCl melt (80wt.% purified AlCl3, 20 wt.% NaCl) using static as well as rotating cathodes and a variety of conditions has been studied. The current efficiency of the process is very high and the electrodeposits are smooth, fine grained and silver white in appearance. Although at lower temperatures, there is a tendency for flakes to be formed locally these are easily removed and do not affect the overall quality of the electroplate.

Notes: Abstract We present an algorithm to solve the graph isomorphism problem for the purpose of object recognition. Objects, such as those which exist in a robot workspace, may be represented by labelled graphs (graphs with attributes on their nodes and/or edges). Thereafter, object recognition is achieved by matching pairs of these graphs. Assuming that all objects are sufficiently different so that their corresponding representative graphs are distinct, then given a new graph, the algorthm efficiently finds the isomorphic stored graph (if it exists). The algorithm consists of three phases: preprocessing, link construction, and ambiguity resolution. Results from experiments on a wide variety and sizes of graphs are reported. Results are also reported for experiments on recognising graphs that represent protein molecules. The algorithm works for all types of graphs except for a class of highly ambiguous graphs which includes strongly regular graphs. However, members of this class are detected in polynomial time, which leaves the option of switching to a higher complexity algorithm if desired.

Notes: Abstract A two-dimensional projection map was computed of the Ca2+-ATPase molecules in sarcoplasmic reticulum, isolated from rabbit skeletal muscle. Crystalline arrays of Ca2+-ATPase molecules were formed by incubating the membrane vesicles with phospholipase A2 and dialysing against Tris/HCl buffer. Ca2+-ATPase molecules appear as quasi-triangular blobs in the projection map and seem to form dimers. The projection map seems to indicate an enzyme conformation somewhat similar to vanadate-induced crystals but different from lanthanide-induced crystals of Ca2*-ATPase.

Notes: Abstract Rearing ofEpiricania melanoleuca (Fletcher) on adult females ofPyrilla perpusilla (Walker) augmented the productivity of the former, which is an effective nymphal and adult ectoparasitoid of the latter, in terms of yield of total and viable eggs. The applied value of this finding in field biocontrol program is highlighted.

Notes: The somatic chromosome complement of Bubulcus ibis consists of six pairs of macrochromosomes, twenty-three pairs of microchromosomes and a pair of sex chromosomes. The Z-chromosome is comparable in size to autosome pairs 3 and 4, from which it is difficult to distinguish, and the W-chromosome is indistinguishable from the larger microchromosomes. The chromosome complement of one individual was found to deviate from the normal because of structural heterozygosity involving a member of chromosome pair 1 and a microchromosome.

Notes: Abstract Ferrite is a potential sorbent for flue gases such as CO2, H2S and SO2. This paper discusses the adsorption and decomposition of CO2 into carbon by hydrogen-activated waste ferrites prepared from Berkeley Pit acid mine water (Butte, MT). The decomposition effectiveness of these waste ferrites was studied at 300 °C and compared with the synthetic magnetite obtained from ferrous sulfate solution in our laboratory. The decomposition was measured by two methods: indirectly by measuring the adsorption rate of CO2 and directly by analysing the carbon deposited on the samples. The results indicated that the mixed waste ferrite had good affinity for the adsorption and decomposition. The CO2 decomposition data of both sorbents fitted the first-order reaction kinetics. Even though the surface area of the magnetite was higher than that of waste ferrite, the CO2 decomposition rate of the waste ferrite was estimated to be 2.5 times higher than that of magnetite under identical conditions. The carbon analysis deposited on the sample indicated that the CO2 was 100% decomposed into carbon and other carbon/hydrogen compounds by the waste ferrite, whereas the conversion was 43% by the magnetite. In terms of specific adsorption of carbon, ferrite was three to five times more efficient than magnetite.

Notes: Abstract Rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings were grown under NaCl stress. The leaf growth of resistant cv. Damodar was less affected than that of the susceptible cv. Jaya. The leaf protein content showed no distinct cultivar or age dependent differences under NaCl salinity. There was a significant increase in chlorophyll (Chl) and carotenoid (Car) contents of 25-d-oldseedlings of both cv. Jaya and cv. Damodar. However, Chl and Car content of 15-d-old seedlings of cv. Jaya decreased and that of cv. Damodar increased, under NaCl stress.
