Notes: Abstract: Extensive simulations are performed to study the persistence behavior of a conserved lattice gas model exhibiting an absorbing phase transition from an active phase into an inactive phase. Both the global and the local persistence exponents are determined in two and higher dimensions. The local persistence exponent obeys a scaling relation involving the order parameter exponent of the absorbing phase transition. Furthermore we observe that the global persistence exponent exceeds its local counterpart in all dimensions in contrast to the known persistence behavior in reversible phase transitions.

Notes: Abstract The orbital perturbations induced by the librational motion and flexural oscillations are studied for satellites having large flexible appendages. Using a Lagrangian procedure, the equations for coupled motion are derived for a satellite having an arbitrary number of appendages in the nominal orbital plane and two flexible members normal to it. The formulation enables one to study the influence of flexibility on both the orbital and attitude motions. The orbital coordinates are expanded as perturbation series in ε=(l/a 0)2,l anda 0 being a characteristic length of the satellite and unperturbed semi-major axis of the orbit, respectively. The first order perturbation equations are solved in terms of elastic deformations and librational angles using the WKBJ method in conjunction with the variation of parameter technique. Existence of secular perturbations is noted for certain librational flexural motions. Three specific examples, Alouette II, Radio Astronomy Explorer and Tethered Orbiting Interferometer, are considered subsequently and their possible secular drifts estimated.

Notes: Summary Opiate agonist (morphine), pure antagonist (naloxone), mixed agonist-antagonist (nalorphine) and analgesically inactive enantiomorph (dextrorphan) produced differential stereoselective effects on the incorporation of [14C] thiamine in the central nervous system of the rats. The possible role of thiamine in opiate effects and its implications are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The morphology and the mycotrophic habit of a new species ofRhizophagus in mycorrhizal association with the roots ofLitchi chinensis Sonn a tropical fruit tree, has been described. It belongs to the vesicular-arbuscular group of phycomycetous endophytes and has been namedRhizophagus litchii sp. nov. The endophyte could not be brought into culture in artificial media, the presence of living litchi roots was necessary for its growth and development. Root penetration of the endophyte was through the epidermal cells. Roots hairs were free from infection.

Notes: Abstract The effect of different concentrations of Zn nutrient application on Japanese mint (Mentha arvensis L.) was studied under glasshouse conditions. Zn application stimulated the dry matter production, essential oil concentration and menthol concentration of Japanese mint. Zn supplies of 0.05µg ml−1 were required for maximum responses in dry matter yield and oil concentration. Significantly positive interrelationships were observed among fresh herb yield, dry matter yield and menthol concentration in the oil. Graphical analyses of Cate and Nelson model indicated the critical Zn concentration in leaves to be 28µg g−1 on a dry matter basis and in the solution culture 0.0475µg ml−1 on the basis of Zn concentration in leaves.

Notes: Abstract In a study on the compatibility among different isolates ofCochliobolus heterostrophus Drechsler in India. 17 isolates were studied for their morphology, growth and sporulation. Of these, 8 isolates acquired from seven States of the country showing morphological and cultural differences among themselves, were selfed and mated in all possible combinations. Out of 36 (8 selfed and 28 crossed) crosses only 14 produced perithecia. Crosses also differed as regards the number of perithecia produced. Isolates were found to be self sterile but cross fertile. Further the 8 isolates were placed in two arbitrary compatibility group A and a. Only inter-group fertility was noted.

Notes: Abstract Each new crack tip created during the fatigue crack propagation and failure of SAE 1045 steel specimens, emits distinct electromagnetic pulse of recordable amplitude. This characteristic can be employed in designing a new non-contact crack growth monitor for studying the fatigue characteristics of metals and alloys.
