Notes: Abstract The electronic measurement system developed for aphids has been modified to measure leafhopper salivation and ingestion activities. Several distinct waveforms were recorded when the rice green leafhopper, Nephotettix cincticeps (Uhler) probed rice plants and into sucrose solutions. These waveforms were correlated with ingestion and salivation activities based on chemical analysis of the excreta.

Notes: Abstract Stylet insertion sites on the leaf surface and leaf cell types fed upon by nymphs and adults of the pear psylla, Psylla pyricola Foerster (Homoptera: Psyllidae) were identified using histological techniques and electronic monitoring of probing and feeding activities. Neither the nymphs nor the adult ingested predominantly from the phloem of Pyrus communis cv. ‘Bartlett’. We showed that the pear psylla ingests from all leaf cell types, but that xylem, phloem and bundle sheath cells are more acceptable for ingestion than non-vascular tissues. The possible sensory mechanisms underlying selection of stylet insertion sites on the leaf surface and acceptance of various cell types for ingestion are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The observational evidence on the strength of the coronal magnetic field above active regions is reviewed. Recent advances in observations and plasma theory are used to determine which data are the more reliable and to revise some earlier estimates of field strength. The results from the different techniques are found to be in general agreement, and the relation 279-01, 1.02 ≲ R/R ⊙ ≲ 10 is consistent with all the data to within a factor of about 3.

Notes: Abstract Observations of bi-polar type I storm centers with the Culgoora radioheliograph operating at 80 MHz show that in many cases they are not oriented as we should expect for emission in the ordinary mode and for the simplest magnetic field geometry. We interpret this as evidence for a twist in the magnetic field.

Notes: Abstract A search for linear polarization showing the effect of Faraday rotation has been made at 80 MHz in type III solar radio bursts. A novel autocorrelation technique was employed. The results were entirely negative, contrary to what was expected on the ground of earlier, less sophisticated experiments. However, there are convincing theoretical reasons why no linear polarization should be expected.

Notes: Abstract The record of magnetic spherules in sediments from Crummock Water (the English Lake District) is presented and a method for obtaining magnetic extracts described. It is shown that magnetic spherule concentrations in the Crummock Water sediments increases by nearly two orders of magnitude following the Industrial Revolution, and this can be attributed to increases in fossil fuel combustion particularly after about 1900 A.D. Associated with the increase in spherule numbers are changes in their size distributions, which may reflect the changing sources for the spherules. It is demonstrated that magnetic spherules are distributed regionally and hence form widespread cryptic marker horizons in lacustrine sediments. Location of this horizon in a lake sediment profile provides an approximate dating method and this horizon may be located using susceptibility measurements corroborated by microscopic spherule counts.

Notes: Abstract The metre-wave observations presented here of a damped train of regular pulses from the Sun appear much simpler than other similar events previously described. The interpretations so far proposed for such phenomena do not adequately explain the asymmetry observed in this case.

Notes: Abstract The case is considered of an aligned composite subjected to tensile creep in the direction of the fibres. A geometrical argument shows that shear strain in the composite is amplified l/2s times compared with unsupported matrix, where l/2s ∼ aspect ratio of the inter-fibre spaces. The shear stress is amplified (l/2s)1/n times, where n is the exponent in the matrix creep law. Consequently the rate of energy expenditure is amplified V m(1/2s)1+1/n times, as is therefore the tensile flow resistance of the composite (V m is the volume fraction of matrix). The potential increase in flow resistance is thus enormous. However, the fibre end-stress, which is calculated, ∝ fibre diameter, and may be large enough to initiate rupture unless the fibres are very thin (e.g. 1 μm diameter). The tensile load is roughly equally divided between matrix and fibres irrespective of volume fractions.
