Notes: Summary Cyclotetracosane exhibits complex phase behaviour in the solid state as well as in the melt as evidenced by complementary methods, DSC, BRILLOUIN scattering, dielectric constant and PE-MAS 13c-NMR. Three solid phases have been verified, one of them — within the range from 299.5 to 312 K — exhibits extremely high molecular mobility. Between the start of melting, 312 K, and the first order transition at ∼ 321 K a mesomorphic type region develops. Two additional transitions have been detected in the melt. That occuring at 361 K (DSC), 356 K (BRILLOUIN data) resembles the Tu as observed in n-alkanes.

Notes: Summary By variable temperature proton enhanced magic angle spinning 13C NMR below Tg individual conformational diads could be resolved for glassy phase segments in semicrystalline erythrodiisotactic poly(1,2-dimethyltetramethylene). An assignment based on γ-shift increments associated with antigauche conformational transitions is given. In addition an improved interpretation of conformational effects in the glassy phase solid state spectrum of amorphous threodiisotactic poly(1,2-dimethyltetramethylene) is presented.

Notes: Summary Alternating propene-carbon monoxide copolymers (P-CO) were melt-blended with polystyrene, poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SAN), and with poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (SMA). P-CO forms homogeneously miscible blends with SAN containing 25 wt% AN at the investigated blend compositions. The transparent blends have single, intermediate glass transition temperatures that fit the Fox equation. The elastic properties of P-CO at room temperature disappear upon blending with SAN because the T g is driven above RT. Polystyrene and SMA are not miscible with P-CO and form heterogeneous blends with two glass transitions. This demonstrates that both the polarity of the styrenic copolymer and the nature of the comonomer govern its phase behavior.

Notes: Summary The first results are reported about the conformational analysis of an amorphous polymer in the glassy state by means of proton enhanced variable-temperature magic angle spinning 13C NMR experiments. In amorphous threodiisotactic poly(1,2-dimethyltetramethylene) at 220 K different conformational diads could be resolved and assigned. From the spectrum of the glassy polymer the shift increment associated with a conformational change of main chain bonds from anti to gauche is determined. In addition the populations of the conformations of CH-CH bonds and of CH-CH-CH2 bond pairs of poly(1,2-dimethyltetramethylene)s are determined in the glassy state and energy differences between these conformations are estimated.

Notes: Abstract We determine the essential spectrum of the linearized Navier-Stokes operator with physical boundary conditions. In contrast to other approaches we do not make use of pseudo-differential operators. We establish a direct proof using only some fundamental results for matrix operators.

Notes: Abstract A sodium-filled Fabry-Perot resonator shows many different types of irregular behavior. A sophisticated experimental apparatus allows reproducible measurements of oscillation scenarios leading to chaos and thus permits a detailed classification of the different phenomena. A quantitative explanation — featuring a new mechanism — for the best reproducible class of chaotic oscillations is given.

Notes: Abstract: Conformational properties of comb-like polymers strongly adsorbed on a flat solid surface were investigated using computer simulation and scanning force microscopy. The computer simulation showed that the macromolecules with asymmetric distribution of the side chains relatively to the backbone are effectively in a collapsed state even under conditions of a good solvent. They formed peculiar helical superstructures which could be observed by scanning force microscopy of cylindrical brushes of polymethylmethacrylate on mica.

Notes: Abstract This study records the chromosome numbers of 10 species ofStreptocarpus; nine of the counts are new. With the exception ofS. buchananii of mainland Africa, all the results are for plants endemic to Madagascar and the Comoro Islands. While there is a strong correlation between basic number and growth form in the two subgenera of the genus on the African mainland (x = 15 among caulescent species in subgenusStreptocarpella; x = 16 among acaulescent species in subgenusStreptocarpus), the situation appears more complex among Madagascan and Comoro Island species. One notable example of deviation from this correlation is shown byS. papangae, a shrubby caulescent species, with 2n = 32 (x = 16). Polyploidy in the genus appears to be absent on mainland Africa, but is present in Madagascar and the Comoro Islands, ranging from tetraploidy to octoploidy. Evolutionary implications of the cytological observations are considered.
