Notes: Abstract I present a construction of Markov partitions related to a statistical description of a class of hyperbolic dynamical systems of ℝ2 with singularities, through a general algorithm. This construction, correct, in contrast to previous attempts, applies in particular to billiards problems, yielding an easy-to-handle Markov partition; as an application, the incorrectness of a lemma of Bunimovich and Sinai (which was known to need improvement) is made clear.

Notes: Abstract We prove that discrete Schrödinger operators on ℤ d with a random-potential have almost-surely only pure point spectrum and exponentially decaying eigenfunctions for large disorder or large energy. This is the first proof of localization for multi-dimensional Anderson models.

Notes: Abstract In this work we investigated the biological properties of sol-gel films in aqueous medium. Functionalized silica films were prepared by the sol-gel process, from organically modified silicon alkoxides with amino or thiol groups. Covalent binding of proteins with different orientations according to the hydrophilic or hydrophobic character of the surface was studied. This binding occurred via a covalent coupling agent providing a very stable linkage. No denaturation was detected and a good detection of the antigen was observed. Immunoassays have demonstrated the biological activity of grafted antibodies.

Notes: Abstract Substituted azobenzene molecules (DR1, DO3, DR17, DY7, Magneson1, DR19C1 and DR19CICI) are grafted onto a silicon alkoxide precursor. Films are prepared by the sol-gel process. We have conducted preliminary optical experiments with DR1 and DO3 functionalized oxide gels. Optical information is written on the sol-gel film via the trans-cis-trans photoisomerization process with a polarized argon laser beam and read with a low power He-Ne laser. A stable signal (up to 60% of the maximum birefringence) is read a long time after the writing beam had been turned off. This shows the ability of the azo oxide gels to store optical information.

Notes: Abstract We prove almost-sure exponential localization of all the eigenfunctions and nondegeneracy of the spectrum for random discrete Schrödinger operators on one- and quasi-one-dimensional lattices. This paper provides a much simpler proof of these results than previous approaches and extends to a much wider class of systems; we remark in particular that the singular continuous spectrum observed in some quasiperiodic systems disappears under arbitrarily small local perturbations of the potential. Our results allow us to prove that, e.g., for strong disorder, the smallest positive Lyapunov exponent of some products of random matrices does not vanish as the size of the matrices increases to infinity.
