Notes: Abstract Blends of poly(ɛ-caprolactone) with either head-to-head or head-to-tail poly (vinyl chloride) were prepared by solvent casting in the form of films and their glass transition temperatures were determined by DSC analysis. The DSC scans of the blends of both poly(vinyl chloride) isomers were very similar. For blends containing 25% and 50% of poly(ɛ-caprolactone), a single transition step, a Tg, was observed, whereas for a blend containing 75% of poly (ɛ-caprolactone) three transition steps were observed, one glass transition and also a crystallization and a melting transition.

Notes: Abstract A theory is proposed for the electrophoresis of a large colloidal particle with a surface charge layer. The slipping plane is assumed to be located within the surface layer but may not be located at the boundary between the surface layer and the particle core. In previous studies, the depth of the slipping plane is assumed to coincide with the surface layer thickness. The present theory makes it possible to examine the separate dependence of the electrophoretic mobility on the position of the slipping plane and on the surface layer thickness. It is shown that, at constant amount of particle-fixed charges in the surface layer, the mobility increases as the depth of the slipping plane (d s ) increases, while it decreases as the surface layer thickness (d c ) increases, causing a mobility maximum in some cases ifd s =d c . Several approximate analytic expressions for the mobility are presented.

Notes: Summary Measurements of the elasticity or viscoelasticity of various materials by the vibrating-reed method at very low frequencies require the use of long and heavy samples. The effect of gravity on these samples has been considered theoretically, and new equations for the storage and loss moduli have been derived. Vibrating-reed measurements were carried out with several kinds of materials at frequencies ranging from about 1–20 Hz. The experimental results indicate that the above equations are satisfactory in practice.

Notes: Abstract Strontium ferrates and cobaltates with compositions SrFeO3-δ (0.06⩽δ⩽0.40) and SrCoO3-δ (0.04⩽δ⩽0.30) were synthesized. The dependence of the oxygen electrode properties on the δ value was examined in 1 mol dm−3 KOH solution. In the SrFeO3-δ series, the samples with 0.24〈δ〈0.29, showed the highest activity in both oxygen evolution and reduction reactions. In contrast, no strong dependence on the δ value was observed in SrCoO3-δ, which also showed a high catalytic activity for oxygen evolution.

Notes: Abstract We have observed Cerenkov light, well below threshold, in an integrating Cerenkov counter used to determine particle composition of the secondary hadron beam, which is the source of Fermilab narrow-band neutrinos. The phenomenon can be understood in terms of diffraction effects in a finite length counter caused by radiation emitted by particles traversing the counter even when it is evacuated. At zero pressure, the light can be considered as transition radiation produced when particles enter and leave the counter. A standard Cerenkov diffraction formula describes both the normal Cerenkov radiation and the light emitted below Cerenkov threshold.

Notes: Abstract In order to measure the substrate-oxidizing activity of intact cells of Acetobacter pasteurianus no. 2, a given amount of the bacterial cells was immobilized on a carbon-paste electrode, and the current at the electrode was measured in a buffer solution. When Fe(CN)3− 6 was added to the buffer solution, an anodic current was observed at 0.5 V (against Ag/AgCl). Further, when ethanol was added to the solution, the current started to increase to reach a steady-state within 3 min. The electrode had a good response to acetaldehyde and lactic acid as well as ethanol. Culture conditions affected the current response to various substances; the response of the electrode modified with the cells grown in static culture was much higher than that of the electrode with the cells grown in shaking culture, and the electrode with ethanol-grown cells had a high response to ethanol and acetaldehyde compared with that of the electrode with glucose-grown cells. The increase in the amount of the current after the addition of ethanol (ΔI EtOH) was linearly proportional to the total number of immobilized cells per electrode in the range 1.0 × 104–1.0 × 108 cells. The ΔI EtOH values were measured with the electrode prepared with a fixed volume of the cell suspensions taken from the culture at 6-h intervals; the dependence of the ΔI EtOH value on time agreed well with the cell growth measured by colony counting and turbidity in the lag and logarithmic phase. After the logarithmic phase, the value of ΔI EtOH sharply decreased, resembling to the growth measured by colony counting, rather than by turbidity.

Notes: Abstract Transmission electron microscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy revealed that the Ar+-ion bombardment of a carbon-containing molybdenum film with an amorphous structure led to the growth of carbide particles smaller than ∼30nm in diameter. The particles possessed an fcc structure and were distributed like islands in the film. Electron diffraction analysis identified them withβ-MoC0.75, a high-temperature phase of MoC0.75. Presumably, the heating effect of the ion beam was responsible for forming and stabilizing the particles.

Notes: Summary I.v. botulinum toxin after 60–90 min abolished the dose-response relationship between pentagastrin and gastric acid secretion in anesthetized rats and guinea-pigs. The toxin reduced but did not abolish the acid stimulatory effect of histamine. As expected, the acid response to vagal stimulation was abolished and that to methacholine in rats was unaltered by the toxin.

Notes: Abstract   ISO 9000 series strictly requires traceability to national or international measurement standards. It is becoming more necessary to make clear the concept of traceability of measurement standards with respect to chemical composition and to accredit the reference material producers. In Japan, the accreditation system for reference material producers is considered to satisfy the requirement of ISO Guide 34, ISO 9000 series and ISO/IEC Guide 25, while the producer fulfills the concept of traceability of measurement standards. This paper describes the production of iron and steel reference materials in Japan relating to the international standardization of methods (written standards) and accreditation of reference material producers.
